@harrisonds I'm not hating on him, I'm just making the observation that rest of the riders where all having fun and smiling etc whilst he sulked elsewhere.
Everyone seemed to have a great time. Cam was great at commentating, It was so much more fun listening to him than (shall go nameless) dont want to hate
I'm going to beat this horse to death, so give me a moment. Feel free to skip the comment and downvote into oblivion.
Every year, every event that he takes place in, every time he's on camera people go for the jab at Semenuks attitude. One day it's he's the sickest rider ever, then another day is he's a piss poor sport who sucks ass on camera. It's no secret he doesn't want to guest star on the Ellen show.
Now, I personally wanted to see Rheeder win one, he's a nice kid and I think everyone deserves a fair shot and he got his. But to sit back here and extrapolate the situation, and talk about "well Zink stayed around even though he got last place and congratulated Rheeder" is nonsense. My favorite part of mountain biking is that I can get on my bike and be whatever it is that I am, I don't have to act or put on a face and be someone I'm not. I'm 100% sure that Semenuk was mad at himself, and it was likely much less painful for him personally to go cool off by himself rather then try to act as cheerful as Zink or Soderstrom or McGarry. Not everyone carries themselves through a situation like that after you completely blow a moment your lifes work has amounted to, and I suppose I resonate with that. I would have hopped on my bike and went to throw rocks at stray cats in an alley way for the rest of the night, the last thing I want to do is "pretend" I'm dandy when I'm really just upset at myself.
I've called a lot of people a poor sport in my lifetime, and sometimes I'd like to think I can justify why I rationalize someone to be a poor sport, but this moment, for whatever reason, really opened my eyes to the fact that it's okay to not stick around just because everyone else stuck around. Unless he's under some sort of advertising contract to talk to the media like it's the damn NFL or something post-game, I don't think he's peace-ing out of his run and going back to his hotel room meant anything at all.
How easy is it for us to sit on our fat asses behind a computer screen and call someone a poor sport based on what we see on a two hour livestream, and try to generalize someone between a bunch of black and white lines and how he fits in the big picture compared to all of the other contenders. But we all know Semenuk isn't like a lot of those guys. He's historically sucked in front of cameras, he doesn't have much to say, and he is his worst critic and wants to see perfection from himself. Is that a bad thing? f*ck no it's not. It's just how he is. And mountain biking should absolutely let you be who you are. Let him come back and try again next time, then jump on his nuts when he wins and pinkbike posts a bike check, but check yourself before you want to circlejerk about how he's a piss poor sport every time he doesn't act how YOU want him to act in a competition.
As for his actual riding, I can see from that first run that he's moving on from opposite tricks every other feature and he's linking combinations together that are new and fresh, difficult and untouched by the rest of the competition. I'm excited to see him unveil those in future competitions because I want to know how judges receive what he was throwing down. Bummed he didn't land because I want to see ALL the riders finish the runs they planned out, but I wish him luck ahead. Let him be him, it literally doesn't speak anything about his riding.
Overall I am happy to see Rheeder get one. He deserves it, just the other day I scrolled all the way back to when he posted an Instagram about how he was sad that he busted his back after leading the Diamond charts, and that he pretty much lost his shot, so I hope this feels as good as it felt for us all to see him take it. Congrats dude!
all i have to say is i hate watching on redbull.com. always a horrible experience if you arent tuned in when that sh#t is starting, and now because i started the "DVR" i missed the ending and the sh#t is spoiled. HATE REDBULL.COM!!!
Good times with Chris Crocker. But nah, I mean I don't even know him (Semenuk) personally and I could really care less. Towards the end of the event I was actually butthurt that he stormed off thinking about how Brett stayed last year at Whistler to watch him do his victory lap, but then it just kinda hit me that it doesn't matter and I'll probably never understand what that feels like because I'm too much of a pussy to dedicate my life to one single passion like all these competitors do. The reason I wrote a f*cking novel is because I've learned that it's better to overshare then not share, and a lot of times if you don't want to be the voice for an alternative idea or view, nobody else will speak up. In the end it's just arm-chair warrior internet comments, and even my comments don't mean shit but I did feel the need to say something. What really went down is I just wasted 15 minutes of my life on Pinkbike comments.
Try hitting your head that hard after the first run and even think about being chipper with us and media at the bottom of the course. Brandon couldn't see out of his peripheral and still tried to ride his second run. Give him a break; he's one of our best friends.
Hope its not significant eye damage. But this does explain why he stopped his second run short.
Appreciate you giving us an explanation to what went wrong.
Very glad he pulled out of that run if that's the case. Second impact syndrome is no joke.
Semenuk might come across as a bit of a robot on here, but he's done huge things for slopestyle and the sport would be lesser without him.
I personally think Semenuk had the best run and should have won if he had landed it. All the other guys were throwing down too though and everyone was riding way better than I expected them to do. Especially Söderström went really, really strong after such a long injury brake and Genon also thew down some banger stuff. Also as much as I would like to see Cam McCaul compete with the other dudes, he was so good and refreshing as a commenator. Way to go Cam!
Semenuk should take the hate as the ultimate compliment. Semenuk is trying to be the best in the sport, everyone else is just trying to be as good as Semenuk. No matter who it is at the top, this is how they'd be treated.
I think another thing people forget is that each year these guys are getting older making crashes harder to bounce back from. Especially with a short time between runs to recuperate.
I know what it feels like to smash your brains and then not be able to see, it's definitely not a feeling that pushes you ride at your limit with all smiles at the finish. When you hit your head that hard, all you want to do is go home.
He stopped he second run due to blurred vision apparently. As if he would hit a huge sender when everything is blurred. He has not lost and reputation in this, he is still one of the most successful people ever in slope style and you know it.
Ah that's why Semenuk bailed on his second run... damn what a beast to even attempt that. That was an awesome slope comp. all around but only wished the weather was better earlier on so everyone had a better chance to stomp their runs. Anyone else shocked by how many were tossing down corked 7s? Insane.
The fact that Semenuk aborted his 2nd run is a testament to his professionalism. You know he wanted to stomp that run and take the win. He probably wanted it more than anyone else out there, especially with the Triple Crown in play. But concussions are serious. An immature rider would've ignored the consequences and continued that 2nd run.
If he was a real professional athlete, he would just explain to one of the interviewers on the course why he didn't finish his second run. He just walked off the course without any explanation & didn't even bother to stick around for the runs of his "best buddies". No wonder everyone will criticize him, it's just not professional at all. No excuses.
For being all of 24 years old he deals with the pressure of world class competition pretty damn well. He's obviously dedicated to the sport, his training, progression, and makes smart sponsor/movie/career choices but he's still HUMAN! Add the concussion and I can't believe the grief he is getting. Here's some perspective; look at mainstream sports and the horrible role models some of the athletes are, and yet Semenuk is getting burned for not explaining a half run with a concussion after falling 20+ feet to his face. Ridiculous, give him a break.
I don't see calling him a poor sport as being out of line at all. It isn't even being that critical. He's probably a really nice guy that makes a great friend. But he's still a poor sport. That doesn't mean he's an asshole, just that his sporting demeanor isn't the best. And it isn't just this time as a result of injury, it's most times. Seriously guys, it's ok to call it as it is. The competition would be a downer to watch if everyone carried themselves the same way. Thankfully, there are a variety of attitudes and a lot of really good sports on the tour.
I agree. He is unquestionably the best slopestyle rider. The others are just trying to match him. He also unquestionably has a face like a slapped arse most of the time. Both observations, one deemed more acceptable than the other. Don't get me wrong, he's unreal on a bike. No one else comes close, at riding or having a face like a slapped arse. Fact is fact. I'm not hating, just stating the obvious.
I really would have wanted to see that as well but to be honest I don't think he deserved a third he did the same trick twice in both runs and that is not what the judges want to see, but he is back from injuries and haven't riden on a while so a fourth place on his first event isn't bad and more so when you consider how big this even was
Rogatkin also did the same trick twice (double tailwhip twice, and there was also a simple and a triple). In total its 8 tailwhip in a run from 4 move witch is really impressive, but I think Martin deserved a 3rd and Rogatkin a 4th place!
The FMB is attaching huge amounts of points to technicality like perfect clean landings and oppo tricks instead of crowd pleasing huge bangers. I can't really say why, I think its very poor direction for the sport.
According to the kiwis who were behind me in the crowd and knew nothing bout mountain biking:
"He got what? Someone needs a good kerb stomping ay"
martin killed it and should have gotten 3rd IMO. probably my favorite slopestyle rider too, but i think he needs to learn more flip combos or cork 7s to be able to match up with a rheeder or semenuk run. one flipwhip and one cork 7 and the rest regular martin bangers would be a winning combo..
I honestly barely even know much about bizet so I don't have much of a bias, but his first was KILLER. Its score, however, was quite disproportionate and it's quite clear that he agreed given his reaction to being told he got a 60. I'm totally bummed for him but I trust that if he's truly as good as that run was, his skills will get him on podiums in no time.
Two years ago at 9 knights Bizet double back flipped his Operator. I believe that same year he place second at Rampage.
He's a beast, just not as consistent as some of the other top riders but a whole lot of fun to watch!
Thomas Zejda truly deserved better than 7th is the one defining thing I can recall about the judging being poor. He crushed, demolished, and destroyed everything he touched and did it with steeez!
He was on a Diamondback slopestyle bike again though, wonder what happened to his carbon YT industries slope bike? The diamondback logo looked to be taped over
There is one carbon mold for the slope bike so far, barely big enough for me. Its just not quite big enough for kelly to feel comfortable on. They hold up just fine
McGarry's a big dude. I doubted he'd be able to ride the YT prototype on a course of this size to begin with. The Diamondback size long's he was riding were always bigger than your average 'large' sized frames. There's no way Kelly was going to be riding the same size frame as Zink and Lacondaguy.
Straight from the YT US/Canada rep. @EeehhZink As stated above it was a sizing issue. Stop the hearsay about broken frames. The kicker is it's still a proto frame that's supposed to get stress tested and pushed to be broken, which it didn't. More people should be stoked to see a carbon slopestyle frame survive not speculate that it broke already.
Brandon had a minor concussion from the crash, he was having some trouble with his vision in his left eye but thought he would try and ride through it. Did the first feature and felt sketchy and reluctantly stopped.
the victory lap was really nice with rheeder and peat, a deserved 1st place for rheeder, and i hope to see logan on the podium soon, this boy have amazing skills!
Bangers on bangers for Rodgat, but definitly not as clean and flowy as Rheeder, So i agree on the 2nd spot. Martin definitly should've been 3rd tho.
Sooooooooooooooooooooo gutted for Semenuk, this guy is a genius and was so close to make history happen again... Totally got is reaction and was so sad to see him depress like that, but it is the sport, he'll come back stronger (if it's even possible).
Why is everybody bitching around about semenuk? (expected it, he looks pretty nervous)Still a good rider. Probably the media does now the same to him like to gee atherton? Once the amazing best rider ever and in the other second "this guy never smiles... he just try to win...bla bla". Its not the ladies amateur class. You have to f*cking give your best! And the wouldnt be if they would not try to give there best. Next time brandon!
Ya Martin should of been on the podium for sure. Such a rad dude an always having a good time. True down to earth dude. Awesome to seem him congrats Reeder on his win. So much style on an off the bike.
Probably because of the rain. It didn't look to wet on the livestream, but you get an idea of what it was like looking at what happened to Genovese on his second run.
Such a sick contest. The level everyone was throwing down was just insane. So many guys can pull an absolute banger run now. A little bummed for Soderstrom, I thought he deserved a slightly higher score. Super stoked to see what Storch, Bizet and Messere can pull on a clean, perfect run. Any insight into what happened to Semenuk would be awesome. I always want to root for the guy, but he seriously doesn't even look like he is enjoying himself out there.
so stoked to see Logan and Rheeder ripping it up. Those jumps are HUGE and I for one was scared shitless watching those riders risking it all and throwing down ridiculous tricks that are not just crazy but where and when can you practice for an event like this........and off season. Caminator was a 9.99 on the announcer scale and has morphed into an intense Emcee. I am sure we are not feeling this cold spell here at home where the winner is from as it's -5C this morning.
i doubt it, there isnt the biggest market out there for slope bikes. plus they have a slope factory team of one rider (if im not mistaken) so itd be a waste of money to blow on a proto frame that may or may not work, when logan can just hop on a ticket s thats tried and true, and toss santa cruz decals on it to fool people not looking at the details!
Reece does the same thing except with giant logos on his. people still ask about the "giant proto slope bike" lol
Renolds was robbed on the second run, I thought it was better than Peat's first run score.. Stoked to see so many cork sevs.. what a contest. Glad to see Soderstom at the top again, and Pilgrim throwing flat drop flips again! can't wait for France.
Rheeder run didn't have anything new in it, just a bag of standard tricks that he has perfected... looks like he's even copied Semenuk's 720's..
Martin & Rogatkin are throwing new tricks with their own style mixed in.... nothing against Rheeder, just saying in my opinion, could throw some more personal style into his airs.
Guys, but that barspin cork 720 and the end of Semenuk's run was insane! Only if he could land it Also he didn't do the second run because of an injury in the 1st.. Martin was very good! Rogatkin killling it! Brett - nice run, but imho he wasn't supposed to be the first.
What was happening to Semenuk and Pilgrim and a few of those guys on the second run? Did that minute of rain in the middle just slow things down too much for a few of them?
awesome they got it off and the weather didn't cancel the premium event. Interesting results, thought Gazza would been up theyre, guess to tired from building the great looking course and not enough ride time, sic as, after the WC cricket will watch the replays! braaap
The hate on Semenuk isn't fair at all....everyone fails/ crashes at some point and it's sad that some of you lash out on him for not being succesive as usual- you can't expect him to win everything and he's right to pull out if he's not feeling right... would the majority of you EVEN pull a 360 down the drop at the start? especially with a concussed head? NO. then shut the f*ck up and leave him- he'll be back on the game no matter how hard he tried to do so.
Every rider has their own moments of failure and glory- it's all part of the sport.
Even though Soderstrom maybe wasn't as clean as he could've been, He threw some bangers for sure. And I'm sure his run stoked up the crowd more than anyone else's. If that doesn't help him get extra points, I don't know what will.
Great Run and awesome comeback, Martin
It is amazing that Rogatkin can pull all those stuff off after loosing flow on previous landing... Give him a smaller sprocket or bigger cranks ;]
...and it is just a shame that Szymon Godziek was not there. Zejda was killin' it! IMHO he was better than Logan Peat. Combos and that flip-double-ship at the end was great
Martin should not have been on 4th. Sick run from rogatkin and killer one fron brett. Dont know what happened to brandon on that 2nd run though im pretty sure he'll work it out.
Bumbed to see Bizet not able complete his second run. If anyone saw his second run at Les 2 Alps last year would know that this guy can throw down an out of nowhere run when he wants.
As for Semenuks behaviour... Kind of disappointed he hasn't learned that throwing a tantrum after something goes wrong is pretty childish. I understand that if you work so hard for something and have it all fall apart so quickly it can be gut wrenching. It's all part of competing at the highest level, especially in extreme sports.
Try being an Olympic Athlete training for 4 years only to have your one run in whatever you do go wrong...That I can see be an okay time to have a bit of an emotional outburst. But there are plenty of events this year on the FMB tour, so just pick yourself up be upset for a few minutes and then go celebrate with your friends and teammates on how well they did.
Olympic athletes have world cups and shit to. Semenuk is the best in the world. To get to that level you gotta put your whole life into it and to fuk up doing chit youve done before would devastate you. Think about if in your job you had three chances a year to do a test and you fuked up. If your not upset after that then theres something wrong with you or you just dont care that much. Some people deal with it better than others but he's got the most to lose so you can't blame for fuking off. At least he didnt get pissed and storm the podium.
Won't be a popular post but it needs to be said if it spares just a few people from making the trip next year.
Don't bother going to Rotorua unless you are competing:
You have to pay $37 to get into the crankworx area to watch one event.
There is no bikepark on that hill, you can pay extra on top of your crankworx pass to ride the two 1minute long blue trails that were closed for the entire week. The announcers said that rotorua is the mtb capitol of NZ, this is simply a lie.
The nearest riding spot is 10 miles away in a forest, where you can pay for uplifts by shuttle bus.
The atmosphere sucks. This is partly because the event is not in the actual town, there was less than 1000 people, and because the crowd are mainly locals who were given free event passes instead of people who actually like bikes. The discussion around us for the majority of the slopestyle was actually about cricket.
On top of this, the entire place smells of rotten eggs because of the volcanic vents in the centre of Rotorua which pump out sulphur dioxide 24/7.
Went with some friends, felt completley cheated and definatley won't be going back.
The distance between the redwoods is 8.4km or 12 minutes in the car. Not 10 miles. Of course you have to pay for the shuttle. What else did you expect? You don't even need to go near the shuttles to access some of the best trails in the forest.
Not sure what you expected from the bikepark. Under normal conditions there are only 6 trails and the website clearly states what is open, what has diversions and what is closed: www.skyline.co.nz/rotorua/Open_Times_MTB
If Rotorua isn't the mtb capitol of NZ then feel free to tell us where the capitol is! Apparently we have all been riding in the wrong place for years!
Of course the discussion is around cricket. It is the bloody world cup final that NZ has never made before! It would be like me going to Canada and complaining about people talking about hockey.
The smell? Welcome to Rotorua.
Sounds like someone hyped this event up for you and you didn't do your research.
The advertising team behind crankworx deliberatley hyped the event to generate revenue.
The capitol is Queenstown. It's a better, cleaner, friendlier town with a great atomsphere and a much larger and more maintained trail network that doesn't stink of rotten eggs every single day. The bikepark in Queenstown is 10x the size and has 3x the vertical. It also has the wynyard freeride area, the dreamtrack, the gorge road dirt jumps... Rotorua is garbage by comparison.
This is NOT the case in whistler or les deux alpes where entry is free and the trails are open during competition.
Can you imagine the uproar if the world was invited for a bike festival to canada, but then the whistler events charged $37 a day to watch, and they closed the entire trail network for 10 days? Because that's exactly what happened here.
Ha ha. Sorry to hear you had such a shite time. I went for a ride in Rotorua yesterday and it was f'n awesome. Whakarewarewa is where the trail network is and it is open 24/7 and free to ride. They even provide a shuttle service (which you pay for) if you don't feel like (or aren't capable) of riding to the top. Far more trails than you could possibly ride in a couple of days. A bit of local knowledge helps. Perhaps with your attitude you didn't get pointed in the right direction. Skyline is new with limited trail options, and yes.... Many were closed for the event because they were being used).
Oh yeah... The rotten egg smell turns me on. Let's me know I'm about to have an awesome time riding world class trails.
I'm guessing with his attitude he definitely didn't get pointed in the right direction. Had he done some research he would have found out uplifts were free, and he could have had the pick of many bike companies top of the line bikes to ride on the trails - all completely free.
I'm not sure when he was actually at Crankworx Rotorua, as there were far more people than 1000 there. I heard that the opening event (The Whip-off) there were 3 times the crowd numbers than for Whistler's version. Slopestyle today was PACKED, and I don't know where he was standing, but everyone around me was stoked on all the riding and could name the tricks being thrown.
I just think @donalddouche has his panties in a bunch because he couldn't pull any kiwi girls while he was here because they'd rather be with real riders over whingers...
That information is simply not correct. The uplifts were NOT free, they required an additional wristband pass priced at $25 per 2 hours on the skyline gondola to take a bike, on top of the $37 crankworx pass for one day entry to the area.
The event was 'packed' for NZ maybe, but then the entire population of NZ is half that of a capital city. It was pretty empty compared to Whis and DeuxAlpes.
Don't get me wrong, the 'huck' and 'eagle vs shark' trails we did at the uplift in the forest on the oher side of the town away from crankworx were short and fun, even if you had to rent a car to get to them and ride the ghetto bus to get to the top, but world class? Not even close.
I'm trying to avoid people eating up the crankworx hype and coming to Rotorua next year with a bike thinking it's in the same league as Whistler or DeuxAlpes and being disappointed. If you prefer to trade personal insults, rotten eggs and obesity don't do it for me; and you need re-evaluate your standards.
@donalddouche you are a f**kin douche bag, read the posts numb nuts no one said FREEEEEE, you need a box of tissues for your issues, take your cape and underwear on the outside off , sniff some sulpher and get some kia ora bro up ya ! Come here and moan your mayple syrup ass off, your brave cause the wild life won't eat ya ? Get some positive attitude or eat your lips fool, now tune into prime and watch some cricket ~ education boy is what you lack of
The notorious Rotorua pong comes from some pretty amazing geothermal activity that people travel from all over the world to see. On Rainbow Mountain (20 mins south of Roto) you can hit a ridiculously fun techy downhill then have a jump in a geothermal hot pool at the end - for free. Not many other places you can do that.
It's not a downhill resort by any stretch (and if you're from Canada you have the very best in the world without leaving your borders), but if you're a trail rider Rotorua is paradise. Whakarewarewa is hands down my favourite place on the planet to ride. The shuttle's pretty good value as well (NZ$40 for 6 rides). As sil3nt says, you can earn your turns by climbing up if you want to save on beer tokens.
As for the crowd: I spoke to people who love riding and had come from all over NZ and beyond, and personally I think it's pretty cool to get a load of local non-riders along to see what mountain biking is all about too. Maybe they'll pick up a bike and have a go afterwards...
@donalddouche - if you had visited the demo area you would have realised that you were given free "demo" wristbands that entitled you to free uplifts with any of the bikes available. You could have spent all day riding if you wanted to.
Slopestyle pulled 6000 payed tickets, with media/locals/freeloaders on top of that. That's pretty decent numbers in my book. And besides, why would you want more people there? Isn't it better to e able to move around than be stuck in one spot the whole time?
Not sure what obesity has to do with anything? Are you calling kiwi girls fat?
Every year, every event that he takes place in, every time he's on camera people go for the jab at Semenuks attitude. One day it's he's the sickest rider ever, then another day is he's a piss poor sport who sucks ass on camera. It's no secret he doesn't want to guest star on the Ellen show.

Oh yeah... The rotten egg smell turns me on. Let's me know I'm about to have an awesome time riding world class trails.
Come here and moan your mayple syrup ass off, your brave cause the wild life won't eat ya ? Get some positive attitude or eat your lips fool, now tune into prime and watch some cricket ~ education boy is what you lack of
It's not a downhill resort by any stretch (and if you're from Canada you have the very best in the world without leaving your borders), but if you're a trail rider Rotorua is paradise.
