Can't believe Semenuk was put to FOURTH with THAT run, winning one in my eyes if we don't include the fellow lads that crashed their aboslutely mental ones.

Semenuk is on another level. He somehow looks even smoother than the racers. The nose bonk was so casual, did he even have his eyes open?

Hope he gets a pre-nup or #norbsgotrobbed may see a comeback!

There was a few nice Runs and it was Hard to say who got the best. I prefer more Smooth runs with Style. Maybe its couse im for very long into Freeride. Anyway im happy that there was not again another Suizid Oakley Sender. For me its not only who do the Biggest Jump or the best Trick. Also i gotta say i dont like the pressure of the events anymore. I mostly like FEST Series. Just having fun!

Kurt had a gnarly non stop run - it was raw and wild - not dialed and pinned. He stomped every landing and every turn with style and speed with an intensity none of the other riders had. It's a small detail that the judges were giving high points for. If you're a dialed rider you better go crazy big - if not then you better year that mountain apart. Kurt Andreu and Aggy did exactly that - it's tough to judge but Brandon being so smooth and dialed probably costed him points rather than being hang onto the bars for dear life style.

Semenuk was the best, two perfect ass fcking runs with tons of flips. He should have won. And Bizet should've got the people choice award, insane attempt on the double backflip. I'm sure we won't see someone succeed one of those or at least attempt one for another few years.
  • 74 0
 Bizet, next year...
  • 75 2
The biggest issue with the judging is that its happening right after each run, and if the judges are stocked on a performance on one line then it dictates the scores that follow on that line and visa versa on other lines. I think they should hold off and present the scoring after everyone has done their first run. Judging IRT a competition where the course is not preset doesn't work.

I'm sure that will never happen though because getting scores one after each run means the 'drama" of scoring and unseating is perpetually there. Its entertaining but its not accurate.

Bizet was RIGHT THERE!!! if he tried it again he'd fucking nail it. i can see there being a video later this year when he returns to Virgin Utah of him blowing that shit up.
  • 27 1
@freestylAM I think the judges have been there all week and have a good sense for each rider's line before they drop. They were there and know whose features had everyone gathered around holding their breath during practice etc.

As they tell us over and over, we have no clue how steep this stuff is. So when I disagree with a judge, I'm much more likely to assume I missed something they saw than vice versa.

On the other hand I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Semenuk's tricks get discounted because he makes them look so easy. You could hear the disappointment on the feed at him not throwing a cork 720, while other guys get big props for a superman. For me, riding Zink's vertical chute should get more points than anything you do off a wooden ramp, but that's what we have people's choice for.
  • 14 0
some of the tricks semenuk does are squeezed in sooo quickly and he throws them off of the smallest shit.

i found some of the flat backflips (like rheeder's) were super impressive but under judged. i find the tricks pretty intense, all these guys are on super steep terrain, yeah Zinks shoot is a trick by itself, but i would say its any more gnarly than Brendog's hopping and skipping around his billy goat trail. he was serious touching ground as much as he was in the air on that middle section. so nuts, and he got a backflip in.

idk, Sorge's run was good, but there are too many epic runs to give it such a decisive victory if its even worthy of winning.
  • 4 1
@freestyIAM getting the score after each run is a classic TV format and it's the best. How can you stay in front of a broadcast for 4 hours if you don't know who is leading the thing and who can beat it?

And with that format, it's a real judgement based on criterias and rules which has been discussed before (that does not insure that the judges are good...). And all in all, to have a good balance, i think it's good to have awards, like people or riders ones, which has been judged after...
  • 14 0
Bizet would have probably won people's choice if Semenuk didn't get robbed of at least a podium. Here's how I look at it. Top 3 guys all sent gnarly big runs. NO ONE sent a cleaner more trick filled run then Semenuk. No one. How that doesn't get on the podium is besides me.
  • 5 0
its a tough one to judge, the fact that every line is different makes for a ton of variables. It might help to make the judging more transparent, seeing the flow, tech, trick, line choice breakdown would be good.
  • 5 1
My thoughts exactly. No idea how zink ended up in 6th with that run.
  • 7 1
that 360 drop was the craziest trick of the contest. No other rider would attempt that.
  • 16 2
The worst shit I'm seeing on PB is "HAY GUYS DONT FORGET RAMPAGE IS ABOUT FREERIDE NOT SLOPESTYLE" like semenuk just showed up on a 4 inch bike and did a backflip double whip and followed that with ten other combo tricks. f*cking christ the dude knows how to slay a big bike people, arguably better then probably most of other guys. Yeah he can throw banger tricks on top of it. Y'all were rooting for Bizet but can't do the same for Semenuk? Guess what, Bizet likes tricks too. The event you people are looking for who have seemed to think whips, backflips and suicide no handers are *the only* tricks that are allowed in "freeride" is redbull hardline. Tricks have always been an integral part of freeride.

Next time lets ditch the judges and have the fans vote online!
  • 4 1
No effin way. If you're not there in person to see the lines first hand ....no way
  • 1 0
Its a lot harder to compare riders here as opposed to a slopestyle event because they all ride different lines. In some video I was watching they said that the judges walk the entire mountain and look at everyone's line to see how gnarly/technical it is, so I want to trust their judgement but i still feel like Brandon or Aggy should have won.
  • 1 0
On re-watch Zink's line definitely looks best in the stream. It looked like Brandon had a cool drop they didn't really manage to catch on camera. I think where it will get real interesting is next year. I was surprised riders didn't get docked for re-using their lines, but watching the dig videos and hearing how many of them actually took two years to finish. Next year it will be real hard to make that case. I love Zink's line, but even the nastiest line gets less impressive with repetition. Seems like no one using the YT ramp qualified. Presumably they only built it because there were some decent lines over there that just didn't link back up to the finish. I'm very interested to see who moves on and who stubbornly sticks to their 3 year old line.

  • 7 0
Congrats to Brandon taking the peoples choice award and sick new Razr whip! Both runs were on point and he came out a winner either way.
  • 1 0
Yeah but they didn't finish their runs and that is part of the deal. Just like the wind, it's not like that is an unexpected and unknown element at Rampage. There is a certain amount of thought that has to be put into the first run, line selection, which tricks, how big to go, will I get a second run, etc.

  • 4 3
Semenuk didn't get robbed. The others got scored too high. And Zink was under scored imo.
  • 4 0
 Any word on bass's status?
  • 1 0
@TFreeman , that RZR is worth around $25K. The $100K was split up among the top scoring athletes, so I'd say he still did alright.
  • 1 0
Well I'd still rather have 25k than a razor. Just saying I'm sure they'd rather have the money
  • 2 1
Re-watching Zink and Semenuk and Sorge's runs, I believe now that Sorge's run was better than I originally thought. Maybe not as good as Semenuk's tricks, but he took some of those steep sections with full speed and his whole line was smooth and he tricked nearly everything. Now I am seeing why Zink did not score as high: he had to go slow through the chute and he did not trick the last section. Still, Zink had some powerful big moments: perhaps the biggest moments of a run that finished, but I think Sorge's all-around was impressive. I have a little more respect for the judging now. I'm sure a lot has to do with how exposed a section is past a landing, etc., as those big tricks are impressive but probably have safer landing regions.

Rampage judging seems to change every year, but it seems this year the tricks were rewarded less than in other years, where then they were being complained about and not being "true" rampage. It seems the judging was trying to go more back to the roots this year.

  • 10 2
Ya, I am a huge Claw fan, but I agree, his run was a little too highly scored. There were so many amazing runs... But hell, I'll give it to him for giving it a go in the wind. So great.
  • 7 1
@rifu I was sure Brendog was 7th, then the final scores came up with Claw in 7th. Thought it was just my mind playing tricks, what's the deal with that?!
  • 15 0
Brendog is hard done by every year. The man threw down this year with that flip that he wanted last year. I'm pretty sure he scored 77.00 last year without the improvements to his line or the flip in his run. Shows how differently the runs were scored this year.
  • 3 2
His score is pretty high for what he did, but I think he got that because he dropped in such awful weather when nobody else would and still threw down a good run. Everything he did was made harder by the wind
  • 6 6
I agree. He got to the bottom quickly, smoothly and in weather than even Aggy and Andreu wouldn't ride in. I think the score was justified
  • 8 0
Whether the score was justified or not, you don't hit the 'send to live telly feed' button until all concerned agree on the score. That's slack.
  • 6 4
He got a score bump because he's a legend and because he sent it in the wind. Gnar.
  • 125 1
Antoine Bizet had me out of my seat, insane run until the crash
  • 28 0
I was on my feet for that one. It'll still go into the halls of legend.
  • 13 0
no doubt!!! He gets the award for coming out swinging the hardest!!! So burls!
  • 4 0
dude. even with the crash, i would have given that a solid 65. fuckin epic. and reynold's beasty ass superman over the canyon gap was super moto!!
  • 8 0
Antoine bizet is the man. Back flipping the canyon gap in qualifine shows that this man goes all in and does not step back. His final run is legend, even he did not reach the finish line. Get well soon!
  • 11 0
He lands that double he wins the event and likely scores very close to 100. Gnarliest run I've ever seen.
  • 80 0
Perhaps a change in 'judging' method is needed. This is not gymnastics or diving - you don't HAVE to give a score right away. Point scoring is merely a means of getting a quick result.

A fairer way would be to let all the riders come down and THEN rank each run (using recorded footage). There's an old saying 'Hindsight is 20/20". Well, then to get a perfect result use the benefit of hindsight with a dose of footage.

  • 28 1
Had this very same conversation with my co-worker today. It's pretty clear that the earlier guys get shafted as far as score goes because they's scared to throw huge numbers out there right away. Then they get hyped and start tossing out all kinds of stupidity.

Not only that... they sit there and talk over the scores. Bull shit.

You have 1 judge for flow/speed. He puts his score in. 1 judge for tech/overall difficulty. Put their score in. 1 for tricks/variety/creativity/style. They put their score in. 1 judge for overall run. They put their score in. Then you do a live feed viewers score. You put that in. Average it all out WITHOUT anyone talking to each other. Score comes out.

This talking thing is all b.s. I've done events of all kinds. When you talk there is always that run that someone comes in super hyped like HOLY CRAP did you see that sender. Then everyone gets hyped and all the scores get bumped. Each judge bumps a litttle bit an run that should be an 88 is now an 93. It's stupid.

This event has been around 10 years. It's time to legitimize the judging. Especially with $100k plus on the line and people putting their lives on the run.

How the hell do you give T.Mac an 82 on his qualifying run and then give bredog an 85 or whatever it was for his run. Sorry but TMAC's run was WAY gnarlier and way more flowy.

This event is gonna hit that point where it can't just be a bunch of bros voting for their bros.... going... dude... aggy has been top qualifier 4 times. He deserves a podium. Or... yo bro... zink did a similar run to last year he doesn't deserve a high score. Even though his line was f*cking gnarly. That top of that line was beast. Then he sends a couple big hits cleaner than last year... and finishes out with hits at the bottom. And some how ends up with a lower score than before? WTF? That was a clear case of...well we expected more...

Needs to be an outside balancer.

Just like with all these corrupt as fight organizations. Need an outside party. A professional.

Maybe have Cam McCaul have a vote. Hell, he's done it. He could still do it. He's helped a few of those guys pull off the tricks they're known for...etc.
  • 4 0
^ Very insightful, I've suspected a lot of that was going down. Definitely hear you on it being time to legitimize judging, because whatevers going on in the judges tent right now is too much of a circle jerk. Aggy did pretty much the identical run to his quali run yesterday, but for whatever reason today it earned him 5 more points. The rationale going on behind these scores likely just follows the direction of conversation in that judging tent. Another redbull event that's gone down like this in the past is the whole Ultranatural snowboard thing travis rice or whatever does. Thanks for your post btw.

 Darren is it you?

The problem with all this speculation about scoring is that we simple weren't there, rampage isn't just about tricks, its roots are also firmly based in line choices and difficulty. It's very easy to see a rider trick a feature and think he should be scored highly for the trick while someone else sends a crazy line that's barely rideable and gets a better score.

Remember the year Gee came second without doing a single trick? He had a hard line and rode fast. He also sent a gap nobody else landed.
  • 1 0
@Nobble that's exactly why @onemanarmy has the right idea. The only way to guarantee that speed/flow and tech get proper and fair weighting in the final score is to have them actually judged separately. It's also the only way to have any transparency into how we arrive at the final scores. I like that idea a lot.

But the communication thing is huge. Anytime judges are allowed to talk to one another the scores will be skewed. It's too easy for a group to hype itself up. You don't see Olympic judges turning to each other like BRO CRAZIEST RIBBON DANCE EVER, AMIRITE?!
  • 82 9

  • 18 2
It was just a JOKE.... Zink gets 89.25 for one of the most rowdy lines in history, and they give Aggy 5 points more for repeating his qualifier run. #festconspiracy
  • 4 0
"Riders' scores are based on four categories: line choice, fluidity and style, air and amplitude, and tricks. " Zink in the bottom had weak fluidity i think... that's why he got lower score.

Congratulations to all the riders this year for taking this event to a whole other level. We sponsored four riders this year who attended Rampage and we consider all of them good friends. As a result, this event is always incredibly difficult for us to watch. We could not be more proud or scared for all of you during the days leading up and into finals. So thank you Antoine Bizet, Nicholi Rogatkin, Jeff Herbertson, and Wil White for pushing your limits and those of mountain biking.  Glad I'm going fishing for the next 3 days, Gonna be just a fucking cry fest all up in pinkbike land this weekend lol. As usual though, Rampage was killer this year! who gives a shit about the scoring, just enjoy the fact these guys do this shit for our entertainment.
  • 33 14
Last I checked this was still a freeride contest, not slopestyle. Semenuk's run was nuts and he probably should've been scored higher than Aggy, but he had no 'Donger', nothing near that giant huck that Sorge and Genon hit. If anything Zink got robbed, he got a lower score than last year even though he threw in an extra drop and that flip gap too. My 2c. Also, Paul Bas' run was mental! Hope he heals quick. Same goes for Bizet.
  • 7 8
Could not have said it better. Semenuk is awesome and so stylish but this is a freeride big mountain event and not slopestyle. Bizet's both runs in qualies an in finals were insane. I was so gutted when he crashed.
  • 19 3
Is that the criteria? A "donger"? Did semenuk lose because he didn't straight-air something big enough? Because I'm sure he could've. Call it whatever you want, but I n every FMB contest there is a course, and whoever makes the most impressive overall run down the course should win. Now, opinions can vary on who that is, but it's been clear for years now that the judges are seeing things differently than the mtb public.
  • 14 4
Yeah what is this post getting at? More straight airs and less tricks is more free ride? Did you all forget that semenuk is bred out of Squamish and was much a part of free riding coming up as your podium today? Just because he threw more complicated tricks in doesn't make it any less free ride, it's the same shit you and your buddies would scream for in the woods when one of your mates drops an oppo three at your favorite local trails. Automatically discounting him because he's also a slope style champ doesn't even work here, because everyone and their mother knows he still gets his time in on the big bike.
  • 12 1
Congrats to all Riders on making the most entertaining week !! Results apart......
I don't have any problems with judges scoring amplitude against tricks.
But they have to set a Scale and be consistent with that.
How can Aggy and Lacondeguy hit the same Line, Aggy straight air everything with a flip o Polaris jump escored 94,75 . Lacondeguy trick a huge flat on the Hip jump and a couple more flips and tricks and score only 1 point more???? How they came with that score???? Sorge rode almost the same line than Zink but skip the huge drop mid run and trhu a bunch smalll tricks on the ridge line. Zink went straight to a huge drop and a 360 on another big drop a huge flit on another drop and scored 10 points less than Sorge...... Thats my point ...
We never know if tricks score more than amplitude because so often the judges themselfs doesnt know how to score.....
The Riders fill confused on how to aproach his run because they also cant figure how the judges score the runs....
The event like every year was awesome. But the judging..... So Amateur......

This is not Joyride. It's not all about tricks. It's also about amplitude. The three guys ahead of Semenuk had way more amplitude in their runs imo.

Aggy and Andreu have a monopoly on huge dongers.
  • 7 1
You missed his first massive move then?? f*ck... That thing is nasty and massive! The cameras don't do it justice
  • 4 0
I would like to see the breakdown for each rider. Flow, Tech, Trick, Line choice. It would make the judging way more transparent.
  • 1 2
Last i checked there were wood features (such as the YT kicker and the red bull canyon gap) on every single course over the past few years. You telling me that isn't apart of slopestyle? Rampage is more freeride mixed with slopestyle than one and not the other. Just my 2c though.
  • 7 3
as soon as Zink started flipping and 3ing the largest features it became a big mountain slope contest.
  • 4 3
Sure theres a slope element to it, but in a slope contest you lose 10 points just for slipping a pedal. That should not be the case at rampage. Semenuks run was insanely smooth and stylish but the biggest thing he did was the first 30ft drop, smaller than what aggy and andreau sent on the same line and I have to agree with the judges that an oppo 3 on a 20ft drop is not on par with a 76ft long 40+ft down gap, especially with a suicide thrown in. Zink got boned though, that was a 50ft drop he 3d, with a decent run after.
  • 1 1
Perfect statement. I don't get it too!!!
  • 2 1
I know what you mean man. It is something I can't understand too. There is no criteria!!!
  • 4 2
I feel the only rider who got majorly robbed was zink, his run was killer, semenuks run was super stylish and no doubt he maxed out the style scores, but he didn't really have any massive hits which accounts for his lower score... That said, zink has been way too over scored in the past with a couple of 1 trick ponies, so perhaps karma came around this year
  • 1 0
Be careful @ctd07. You're gonna get neg proped for saying Semenuk's run wasn't the best like I did. I totally agree with you. That's exactly what I said above.
  • 21 3
you would think after all these years they would find a way to change the time of year of the event to a more predictable forcast with less wind. Either way congrats to Sorge. Killer run. really wish we got to see Vinks line pulled though.
  • 3 0
That'd be a good thing to keep in mind looking for a new venue...
  • 4 0
Virgin is plagued with wind year-round
  • 7 0
My understanding is that the wind picks up the later in the day it gets, so couldn't they start the comp as soon as the sun is up and the light is good?
  • 3 0
the whole mountain was shaped by rain and wind. its there all the time.
  • 2 0
It's the desert... it's easy easy to predict. Anyone that's lived in the desert can tell you. Afternoon... yeah that equals wind. All riding needs to happen before 2pm. Rain... generally speaking you can get pretty reasonable percentages a couple weeks out.
  • 1 0
Considering it was very windy out there Thursday morning then it calmed down as the day went on, you just really can't predict it. You really are at the wind's mercy out there.
  • 17 0
Uh-oh, I feel a rant coming on! The judges have some bias going on that if you're good at slopestyle you can't win rampage. There are slopestyle guys who obviously aren't contenders at rampage, but semenuk is not one of them. Try and tell me semenuk couldn't have pulled sorge, aggy, or lacondaguys run. props to these guys for finding their niche with the fest-type steeps and huge jumps, but Brandon's got all that plus the tech tricks. If the winner is always going to be the guys who have the the judge's favorite line down the mountain and the riders always get exclusive rights to their line, then I'm done tuning in.
  • 21 2
Sorge Wins. Norbs got engaged. Semenuk got robbed. Bullshit (Not Norbs getting engaged) I want those 3 hours back.
  • 19 0
on a good note, C. Mccaul really did a good job as a presenter, hope to see him more frequently!
  • 4 0
Yes indeed. I miss watching him ride. I'd like to see him compete a few times a year. But I"m happy to see him succeeding in this part of his career and helping other riders... brother included.
  • 4 0
Cam is doing an awesome job. He has clearly put in a lot of effort to succeed at announcing. Some of his quotes were hilarious too. He was on point and his personality is classic. Nice work. When he made fun of Pat Parnell's handwriting I laughed so hard. Or when Pat asked him how his french was...
  • 1 0
hahahaa "its just english with a french accent", hahahaha that was funny! I think it made it a lot more viewable, you know at some point I was wondering how could i have spend 3 hours+ seeing rampage and not being tired of it! it has to be in part because it was never boring with him talking not even the 30 min waiting for the wind It didn't even bother me, because i was entertained. a thing that did not happened on the last rampages it was painful to hear the commentator trying too hard to be funny and not being involved in the sport he didn't get the sense of it.
  • 19 3
I think you have to be there in person to see the real difficulty of the rider's lines... Jugding in front of the cumputer is pretty easy indeed
  • 9 2
f*ck that, one guy does two perfect unreal runs and gets less points then guys that do a single line down the mountain? yeah that drop is nuts and impressive as f*ck don't get me wrong; but not a better overall run imo!
  • 3 2
I totally agree that semenuks run was smoother and had better tricks in it, but (from the front of my screen), Sorges and Aggys Terrain looked way more rough and demanding
  • 14 0
How does zink get scored so much lower then when his terrain at the top of the run was ridiculous and He's putting 360 and flip drops in there too!!!
  • 15 2
Everybody needs to go back and watch Zinks run. If anybody got robbed it was ZINK. I think Zink could pull off Semenuk's run or any of the top 5 guys runs. But I do not think any of them could pull of Zink's run. Thats all there is to it..
  • 5 1
Zink got hosed but it was not a better run than semenuks. And I don't think he could do Semenuk's run. Not as clean and not as style filled. He's a different kind of rider. Different lines for a reason. The top part of Zink's line... he'll never get the cred he deserves. That isht was super gnar. Was more impressed with that then the 3 and the flip.
  • 7 1
@onemanarmy I think you nailed it. Semenuk could do anyones run, but no one could replicate his.
  • 4 3
You guys are nuts! Semenuk has never landed a 3 as big as Zinks. I will give you the fact that the technical side of Semenuks tricks "might" be hard for Zink to pull off but your missing the fact that Zink's 3 was at least 20 feet higher than Semenuk's. Semenuk had a flawless epic run that deserved top 3 for sure but I still dont think he went super huge on anything. Zink went SUPER HUGE. Plus the lead in to his big spin drop was so f*cking gnarly. Do you guys even remember the super technical lead in to the super big step down??? on to a 50+ foot 360 to a rad hip jump then to a 40+ foot back flip.. come on! Go watch his run again I'm telling you that you will see it my way:-)
  • 3 0
And as much as I love Andre and he is probably my favorite rider, he did not deserve top 3 on this. If you watch his run again he cased almost every jump. Yes rad 3 back flips but they were not all clean. Him and zink should be in each other podium spots. Judges botched this one bad. Its just too hard to judge that shit on the spot, they need to rethink the system. Let the judges watch each run on replay 2-3 times, then score each round after all rider have gone. Its the only way to fix this nonesense. Your talking about peoples careers here.. ZINK got jacked.
  • 6 0
And everyone realizes that a dude that did basically no tricks (D. Berrecloth) got a better score than a dude that did a picture perfect super man over the canyon gap followed by a huge no footed cancancatwalk that was BAD ASS (S. Reynolds).

This judging system is beyond f*cked.
  • 20 3

The venue is pretty much tapped out now.

Next year, competitors get 2-3 runs of their choice, any runs, add the 2 runs and you have a winner. Who cares if all of them want to try Aggy/Andreu's run.

Have at her! May the best rider win.

Simple really. No digging really needed, just practice.
  • 2 0
 ^^^^ This
  • 8 0
Think they can iron out a little bit but I think you're right.

I'd like to see something like this...

12 dudes instantly qualified from being past podium sitters. 12 guys invited because they're dope. 6 guys invited by fan vote out of a list submitted by the powers that be.

Total of 30 guys. PERIOD.

No qualifying.

You show up... spend 3-4 days fixing up your lines and paying off guys to use parts of their lines, etc. 1-2 days of practice and line adjustments.

1 day. 1 run each. The results of that run determine the take off times for day 2. Riders choice. You win you can decide to go 1st last or 10th... whatever the hell you want. Everyone takes turns down the list picking slots until they're gone.

Best run of the 2 days wins.

You have these awards:

Top 3 guys overall.
Best trick.
Viewers choice.
Riders choice.

Everyone gets prize money or goodies.

You get rid of qualifying and you limit useless injuries. If they were taking it seriously this year and took a look at what TMAC did he would have score more than 82 and at the very least been eligible for the other awards. As it is now... f*cking waste of time and risk to his body. Same for the other guys that got hurt in qualifying.

These are professionals. They don't need to prove they deserve to be there. If they need to prove it they shouldn't be there.

Sorry but the system needs to be changes. It's not a grass roots event of a bunch of pyscho's jumping off cliffs anymore. This is a high dollar event that some guys spend the whole year prepping for. Needs a change.

Every year it's way way too heavily effected by wind and poor judging. Both are easily avoidable and repairable.

I was however very happy to see how many guys made it top to bottom and see a few guys with Bell logos on their heads. LOL!

I'm happy to help fix it. LOL!

I think they should have to do all the judging a few hours after the event, once everyone has calmed down and runs can be compared side by side.

well no contest goes like that.... I'm just really upset for those riders who deserved to win for how HARD they've been working.....

I don't think it's a coincidence that it all of a sudden became windy when the judges angered Zink.......

Bah. Glad I skipped the second round - seems like it was a pretty big bust anyways. Would have liked to see Semenuk scored higher, as his run was banger, and the best in my opinion.

Genon for the FMB Overall !! Smile props to all the riders who decided not to take their second run
  • 3 0
Pretty rad... but in my opinion Rampage should not have been part of the discussion for that series.
  • 10 4
Props to all the riders, awesome to watch the best of the best compete. Unforutunately, the judging of this event has been horrible in the past and it did not stop this year. #BrandonGotRobbed
  • 5 0
Thank's to all of the riders that put the work in, and put on one spectacular show. Incredible watching, going to be loving the next week or two with the clips and interviews. Mind bending riding by one and all.

Judges.........eeejits.

Semenuk not in the top 3?
Zink not scoring over 90?

Wtf?
  • 7 0
Aggy's final run was nearly identical to his qualifier run and he scored 94.75 and 89.something respectively, how is that possible? Judges are drunk for sure.
  • 5 0
Didn't notice this at first. Not a good look for decent, objective judging.
  • 2 0
They have such a boner for that line, last year and again this year. Both Zink and Semenuk have just as difficult lines and trick out.
  • 10 2
 And the winner is......the wind.
  • 24 10
 No, it's Semenuk
  • 7 0
I really enjoyed this years rampage, fck the score. Everyone was just in another level!! I hope paul bas is doing fine.
  • 4 0
Semenuk should have won => maybe podium should be determined by People's Choice next year ?
However, I agree with Best Trick awarded to Sam Reynolds (but another Best Trick trophy should be manufactured for Norbs' proposal ! Smile )
  • 4 1
I was there. Reynolds little back flip at the top in do or die land combined with the superman and crazy dismount he missed... i think he was better that semenuk. Just missed that last jump.
  • 5 1
 I've got an idea:

Why not just let all the finalists have their runs first and THEN do the judging? That way you could really compare ALL the runs relative to each other, and maybe (you never know with these judges though) there wouldn't be such ridiculous unwarranted scores like that 96.5
  • 5 1
Everybody talk about Semenuk,Aggy,Sorge, ranking, drunk judges..but don't forget main thing:the true winner of today is Norby!
#norbsgotengaged
Oh and yes of course #semenukgotrobbed!
  • 4 1
Semenuk had a really technical drop big airs and crazy tricks. Sore had a similar line but didn't do near the same amount of tricks! The judging is obviously messed up. There were at least 3 or 4 other guys that I thought had a better run then sorge. Sure it was technical but a lot of other guys had technical lines also and tricked stuff. bad judging

It's politics! Redbull plays the "independence" card this year, otherwise they'd get crap for propping their own sponsored riders. Brandon simply wore the wrong helmet. Or judges took substances making it hard to stay inside their own bodies and consequently - the Utah venue...

WAKI I don't think people appreciate your humor. This comment and your comment about capitalism dont get the upvotes they deserve.
  • 2 0
I think it should be half judges half rider. first they get the judges score, then all the rider should meet and discuss the lines and give points away. just my opinion, it's so hard to judge rampage, everybody is a winner to me.
  • 2 0
Judges and organizers just have to uncover detailed judging system; that is, how many points out of 100 goes for line choice, how many for amplitude, tricks and so on. And they should report not only the overall point but also its structure. It would solve the problem of misunderstanding among viewers and make the judgment procedure more clear and transparent.
  • 3 0
they did a pinkbike interview last year where they said the four categories line choice, amplitude, tricks, tech (i think?) all were part of the score and all did there part. never described how much of which factored into the overall score, but at this point the judging makes so little sense I don't think they could save face by trying to pull a system out of their ass and feeding it to us. they gave aggys exact same run he did in qualis 5 extra points for doing it in finals. theres no rhyme or reason to it. it clearly doesnt go to tech, speed or tricks, it mostly went to amplitude. they should be forward about that next year so people know what to build.
  • 2 0
it's such a downer that we are all waiting for this event the all year, every thing about rampage is amazing but the judging is so stupid.... please next year new judging stuff and monitors/camera mans for them to replay the runs...and take some more time before scoring....personally i had a blast watching Semenuk and zink runs the most
  • 4 0
Not sure about that judging. Sorge's an amazing rider but he didn't quite have the level of run as Semenuk, lacondeguy, and Aggy in my opinion.
  • 2 0
If crankworks slopestyle can have a rain delay until the next day, Rampage should have a wind delay. Look how long before the event was over, Sorge is chillin and knew he won it long before it was called for weather. See the look in lacondeguy's eyes??? to not let that guy go down for a second run is criminal.
  • 2 0
I've been around since the very first Rampage & this is certainly not the first time the judges have made unpopular decisions but this year this may be the worst yet. I've watched 2015 Rampage multiple times at this point & there is no rhyme or reason to the scores. No way Sorge had the winning ride, 3rd best maybe but 1st no way. The judges have lost All credibility IMHO.
  • 2 0
I didn't watch the live feed....i saw the replays and just really couldn't figure out how judging was done...Semenuk was smoother than butter and was visibly more stable than the other riders! And was the only one in top 3 to take a second run as well...hats-off

Props to Sorge for the win and Sam for best trick!
The judges have a tough job - However they are also on site and as such will have a different experience and perspective than people sitting at their computer watching a live feed through the camera eye. I get that everyone has their favorite that they want to see win, however that doesn’t change the fact that this is a judged event, and the panel is arguably more qualified than most posters here. Flame away.

 +1000000
Semenuk did perfect flat drop flip can : okay, good trick
Aggy/Lacon/Sorge did something super sketchy like flat450 on hip , which Lacon barely survived, or a silly sui nohand from aggy on step-down : SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!
Really,Semenuk jumps same things with tricks much more cleaner, than aggy without it (about last transfer jump).
  • 3 0
lacon had a great run, i feel like if he just did a superman on polaris jump he would have a better score, but looking at those "this is not slopestyle" coments it seems like people don't see Semenuks drop in(same or bigger than aggy/lacon), "lillypad" opo 360, and that flatspin 450 at the end, and not to mention just killing it with style and whips in between.
  • 2 1

  • 1 0
I think the judges where told by Redbull to judge for speed and big air tricks, stuff that the everyday man/woman on the street can appreciate, not the truly difficult technical skill (do I need to mention any names?) to throw it down super hard. Its about the money, making this contest mainstream, selling power drinks.
  • 1 0
With the riders bodies on the line and serious injuries afoot and uncertain health care coverage, not to mention little or no pay for participating in these contest, the riders need to, dare I say it? UNIONIZE! Without the athletes there is not Rampage, or any of the other contests. With Redbull and all the other big money sponsors involved this is not longer a grassroots event or "Underground/
Fringe" cultural phenomenon, it's big money and exploitation great athletes. Come on guys get it together and get together. Stick it to the big guy.

Props to Brendog for doing a second run and scoring higher. Props as well for executing two back flips! He's new at doing back flips and he's been practicing hard for a while and it paid off!!

I honestly think the dude who did the double back flip would have stole the show and placed first.

North proposing was so unexpected and awesome but it felt so awkward and cringey because he didn't say anything and finally he said "will you?" HAHHAHAHAHAA North is the man!

What happened to Nico Vink?
  • 2 1
I presume all this nonsense about the judging is coming from 15 year old dirt jumpers, unconcerned with and ignorant of the the actual judging criteria. Just re watched the top 5 runs and the scoring order seems pretty accurate and obvious. All the Semenuk fan boys gushing over his smooth and stylish tricks are missing that tricks are only part of it, and that because he creeped conservatively into several of his take offs, rode relatively slowly, and went significantly smaller than the top guys, he got what he deserved.
  • 7 3
 1st Semenuk 2nd Zink 3rd Sorge
  • 7 4
So much whining. Get out of the hype bubble. Sorge's run was Ace from top to bottom.
  • 2 3
Not a hype bubble. Sorge went big and went hard. But he missed most of his landing. He wasn't smooth. Didn't trick. Was super sketch in a lot of places. I guarantee you he did not expect to score that well on that run. He sure he had more planned.
  • 2 4
He went bigger and faster than all of them. The top section was the gnarliest. The ridge with most flow and big moves. And the gab was insane.
  • 3 2
damn man! what a way to ruin the rampage with such a bad judging! semenuk, zink, lancondeguy, genon did MUCH better than sorge (not blaming him) the fight was on andrew and semenuk and that was all!
  • 4 0
But that huge Superman. Rampage was worth it just for that.
  • 5 4
If you look at Semenuk's line compared to all the others, it so much more manicured and groomed, which is not what Rampage is really about in my opinion. I think he deserved what he got.
  • 1 1
Wonder who of the judges crew hates Rheeder personally: his run was super smooth, tricks were done perfectly, everything was done with style. Not that I say this run was enough to win, but 81... And then Tommy G gets 91 with awesome, but definitely not 10-points-better run. Conspiracy as it is.
  • 2 0
 Rheeder had poor top part.
  • 3 2
So much fuss about Bender being judge (or inability to judge). He almost died several times from dropping his bike off a mountain. So if a rider can't top that, it's unlikely he's going to score well in Bender's book.

Best Rampage coverage yet. Cheers to Cam McCaul for solid commentating. Red Bull should hire him on steady.

I dont understand why every one think Semenuk should have won. This is not a slopestyle competition. Sorge had clearly more technical stuff at the top and had more amplitude in his line. + Sorge had an insane flip tuck no hander at the bottom. Doin technical tricks doesnt make you win if you lack other important stuff in your line.

What about Zink then? Had everything, and imo the burliest line with by far the biggest tricks.

insane flip tuck?which are sketchy? Sem did flip one foot can to a micro nohand and land it perfectly.
  • 1 1
Yep, Zink was definetly underscored, if he would've had a few more big jumps towards the bottom it would have been a winning line for sure, and I agree the judges had their weak moments, I was just saying that I dont think Semenuk should have won.

Disappointed! Semenuk and Genon's runs were very good... But better than Zink's? Didn't get it. Aggy's Run were better than both (Semenuk and Genon). Is this a slope style contest? A popularity contest? Ow man. Didn't get it.

And f*ck that wind.... hellish f*cking wind.... hate that shite!!!

Can't believe I didn't see Aggy, Lacondeguy and Zink's second runs...

2016 please!!!

 Congrats Norbs!!
  • 2 3
Semenuk did not have huge gaps like Sorge, Agassiz and Lacondeguy had. Semenuk had some slopestyle stuff on smaller fatures, but this is not crankworx, this is rampage

 do you have eyes?

could you please share video where Semenul hit that 76 feet drop?
  • 3 0
well i could share a video where Semenuk hit the same steep start drop as Lacon/Aggy, did a "lillypad" opo 360(not freeride???), crazy clean 450 at the end, more style and flow than anyone, more (progressive/unusual)tricks than anyone. I'm not 100% sure he needed to win, but it was at least better than Aggy's run... I know it's not a slopestyle contest but it also isn't a "who landed further on a big drop" contest... Zink got robbed too

Sorge's run was so pedestrian. I swear with the rise of popularity in mtb and the amount of money involved, we're seeing rigged comps just like in mainstream sports.

I suggest Rampage should be judged ala American Idol where the fans can vote who had the best run and not be left alone to the judges.

All this talk of robbery is even more tired than the wheel size debate
