I'm assuming most of these riders are useing SPD . What kind of SPD pedals ? Flat with SPD ? Or others ?
  • 1 0
Most run clips I think for the climbs an control. At the moment, the most popular clip less pedals are shimano and crank bros. if they are using cb's, they are probably using mallets with a flat pedal style platform but the ones who use shimano probably use the xt/xtr pedals with or without the metal cage.

Long story short, probably a mix of platforms clips and non platforms, but I think very few people will be running flats.

Thank you . So the XT style pedals would be better for xc ? I'm looking at 5.10 falcon SPD shoes with XT trail pedals

After a set of m520's and then m647 (I think-the dx clip pedals) I got a pair of cb mallet dh. I still uses Shimano mtb clips on my road bike, because they have a much more secure feel, but I found for dh, the extra platform you get with mallets and the easier entrance/release makes them more comfortable for mtb for me. They just feel a bit less constraint. It's preference though, and although it's the opposite in my experience, a lot of people find that the bearings in bc need a lot of servicing and die quickly. (There is still no play in mine after a muddy winter full of riding and 8 months of use). I did manage to bend the cage on my first set after a month, but I hit a tree at high speed and I think most flat pedals would have bent in a similar way.

However, the shimano pedals feel good too. And from reviews, are more reliable. Defo try both out and maybe a few other brands before you make your mind up.

If you want a smaller platform, the cb candy pedals are Apparently very good too.

I have only tried a pair of xc/ stiff soled shoe from halfords, which I got for because they were cheap, and tbh they were good, and a pair of more flexy soled shoes, shimano am45. They are great and I prefer the wider, more comfortable sole. They are also good because the flap stops the laces flapping about or coming undone and they are pretty water proof and not too hot in the summer. Again, it's about preference.

Also worth mentioning, the cb cleat is less noticeable when walking than shimano, and can clip to the pedal when covered in mud, but it wears down faster. Shimano is less fast at wearing out, but if you walk in the mud, you will have to unpick it from your sole and they are noticeable on your sole, especially with softer soled shoes, that are more comfortable and easier to walk in.

I am quite biased though, but it's worth checking out a few brands.

^sorry, just realised how long that was. It seems I can write longer essays on clip less pedals than I can for whole novels in my English exam.

It was a massive mix of everything from what I saw

superbikes - I own Falcons and deore trail pedals. Not a good combo, shoes particularly, I am buying new shoes as soon as the pay check comes. The cleat sits very shallow so your shoe will tip side to side all the time on most pedals. From what I asked my friends who also own Falcons they work only on Mallets and Time DH4s.

In general, you might need to go through a couple of shoes and pedals to find home, so take it easy Wink Mallets ain't a wonder thing, bearings are sht.

Thanks all great advice . I've ordered the new 2014 Maltese falcon SPD shoes with XT wide trail pedals . Maybe not a brill combo from what I've read oops but will try it for feel in a car park and return the pedals for mullets or DX if needed . Feel I'm makeing the right move to SPD but my god this could get a very costly game
