Video: Mikey Sylvestri Closes Down Northstar

Oct 13, 2012 at 14:51
by Riley Gibson

As the Tahoe mountain bike season reaches it's closing, Mikey Sylvestri gets in his few last laps of the season at Northstar California. This video features the newly built Gypsy Trail after half of it was washed away from torrential rains, as well as other trails. A big shout out goes to the trail crew at Northstar for working hard to provide a fun place to ride.

I love it when you guys start talking about how your winter is coming and its gonna suck, cause it means my summers coming and its gonna be rad!!!
  • + 14
I love it how they start moaning that they cant ride in winter. Good old nz and riding all year round plus snow in the winter! Big Grin
  • + 11
Winter is coming here and I love it anyway! I'm one of those weird types that actually prefers the cold winter rides to the dusty summer ones!
  • + 8
In Norway we put on spikes and ride anyway. Snow won't stop us from having fun!
  • + 3
Yeah man I rode with my Minions in the snow when it was -18°C outside, it was so much fun!
  • + 3
I love living in perth and it physically being too hot to ride in the middle of summer
  • + 8
The problem here in Montana is we get a sh*t ton of snow every year, and when you have 4-7 feet of snow on a trail, all the studs and spikes in the world isn't gonna help. We end up turning into cave dwellers all winter watching the same mountain bike videos we've seen a thousand times, just to keep are spirits up enough so we don't kill are self, knowing in 6-7 months will be riding again.

Man I hate winter Frown
  • - 6
 Get shovelling!
  • + 6
Alot of us here in us ride all year 365. That snow/ice riding giving us huge advantage come mtb season. Then theres ski/board season to think about. Basically bring on the snow and you guys have fun down unda mates.
  • + 5
Oh we tried that. 5 of us spent a whole Saturday digging out a decent section on the horse trail and the weather said it was supposed to be sunny on Sunday, but typical Montana weather it dumped snow solid for the next three days, covering everything back up that we had dug out. A person's soul can only take so much heart break! No it sucks but we usually just brake out the sleds and go mobin some hill climbs and railin powder in the woods!
  • + 0
Oh ya montana a diff story. Really too much snow for bikes, but epic conditions for all other winter sports. If you want to ride ship your bike south and go below the snow line. Here on east coast we go to florida but out west head to the desert.
  • + 0
Ah that sucks, its never usually too deep here so we can probably clear 100m or so of trail in about an hour, could you not grit the trails or would that do nothing?
  • + 2
Snow doesnt stop swedes anyway, were tuff Big Grin
just have fun in winter with more clothes on. I ride in shorts in november so what? Go ride!
  • + 5
Lol you guys ever heard of montana? They get redicilous snow and have the most rugged terrain on earth. They actually shut down ski resorts out there because snow too deep. If you cant ski have no chance on bike. Here in ny we ride thru all of winter and love every minute of it. The winter can make you a stronger rider or some people choose to stay inside where its safe and warm. We call those hobby riders, only out in the good conditions. Meanwhile we out hucking huge jumps in snow having a blast.
  • + 2
If something needs testing how it will handle in snow, they go to Sweden for a reason.
  • + 5
End of Summer just means that the Ski Season is starting!
  • + 3
yep, bikes are going to get replace with snowboard real soon. I think i prefer riding bike over winter sports, but you can't really beat a day in the appalache with 3ft of fresh powder with a bunch of friends!
  • + 1
Florida? There are no mountains in Florida, maybe a couple of rock quarries but no hills or mountains...
  • + 2
I guess you never heard but florida has awesome trails. Check out OMBA.ORG, or Santos bike park. They have bigger jumps than you find at most mountains. Endless xc, literally can ride into gulf of mexico. Tons of rocky singletrack, huuuge dirt jumps and a whole freeride area with wood features. It doesnt matter where you from go check out florida. They riding 365 down there and very talented crew.

Pinkbike should move to Australia till our spring.
  • + 0
@otehnoes, now I'm not a meteorologist but negative 18 degrees Celsius seems kind of far fetched
  • + 0
It may be hard to believe for somebody who lives in Navada but it really was, winters can get cold in a Nordic climate. Where I live is only about 700ish miles from the Arctic circle.
  • + 3
Here in Canada -18 is a relief, we have to suffer through -30 most of the winter. And for all you who dont know, it is not unusual for a ski hill to get a 10ft base of snow.... digging that out would be a bitch!
  • + 0
Exactly! Whilst -18 is cold around here, its not necessarily unheard of! It would be like saying -20 is far fetched for Canada!
  • + 0
wet winter loam is the best ever
  • + 0
worst i've experienced is -47 C on top of a mountain (was there to ride my board). At this temperature, you don't stop moving!
but oh man was the super dry powder worth it!
  • - 3
Eventually it will get alot warmer in The winter for everyone and there won't be much snow, and all the glaciers will melt. Look at what we are doing to this planet and think about the implications of global warming. There is no moral justification for our lifestyles.
  • + 3
Make no concession to the elements.
  • - 1
@Protour : totally agree with you buddy, worst of that is when the ice road will open up north, conflict will start (they already are, canada and USA are arging about the submarine frontier between both our country (alaska vs canada, up north). Than people will try to bomb shit or whatever to control this road and you know ...shit happens.

Problem is, there are human living on this planet (you might be part of that specis) and most of those creature don't care at all, cause caring is not giving them money to buy the stuff they don't need, and they can't care much about what will happen to futur generation : cause they'll be dead.

It's not all sad, time to break out the boards and skis! I would rather be on my bike though Frown
[Reply]
  • + 10
Anybody else sad that this video contained only about 16 seconds of Gypsy?
Just me? My bad.
  • + 3
I saw like.. 12 seconds. There was more Livewire at the beginning than Gypsy.
  • - 1
It was funny that he went up the Vista Chair, started down Sticks n Stones, and then the next shot was Gypsy, on the whole other side of the mountain
  • + 0
^^ and that was one of the only shots of gypsy

Anyone else sick of intro's? That was a full minute of nothing before he started riding. I don't care what the lift looks like at Northstar, I don't care how you walk your bike off the ramp, or put your goggles on. Almost 1/2 of this video is garbage. The rest is absolutely sick. Wouldn't it be better for the whole thing to be sick. How many video's have we seen that show a chairlift spinning? Does anyone care?
  • + 5
gotta feel the music too though, riding is what we want but most of us putting together edits are upcoming and enjoy the art of the film as well as the riding aspect. I dont want to watch nature for one minute then riding, so at least this mixes in parts of the bike, the lift, it brings you into the riding makes you feel like your there.
  • - 2
yes. Get on with the business! in short clips id like to see some riding, in movies i dont mind whatever-edits here and there
  • - 15
Way too many shots of his fork at the beginning also.

I've heard of this guy, and I like his style, but has he ever even qualified for a World Cup DH final?
  • + 7
Just to clarify: I thought the filming and the riding was excellent after the long intro. I don't see how qualifying for a World Cup DH final has anything to do with this.
  • + 2
He has had the points to go run qualies but not made it. What about you Protour? Do you also make videos? If you did I guess they would have no art appeal to them simply tripod shots of a rider flying down a pitch. Stop trolling.
  • - 7
Wow, look at how defensive you got! Can't believe what a immature sissy you are, all I did was ask a question. And if overly-repeated shots of a stupid fork are art, that is some pretty crappy art. Yes I have helped make some mtb movies. Look at my profile dummy.
  • + 4
Mikey actualy has made it to a world cup final, this year at windahm and he did it with a seperated shoulder... it was only his second try at a world cup.. Never won a real race??? so i guess beating Greg Minnar last summer at the triple dhip in granby colorado dosent count then???? this kid will smoke you chainless on a enduro bike....
  • + 3
 Protour your profile has nothing
  • - 7
I never said it had videos, I just said "look at my profile dummy". And you looked.....
  • + 3
looking at your profile, it just looks like you like to take pictures of little girls that you dont know...
  • - 4
One picture...and you looked too...what's that make you? Only dummies were supposed to look, remember?

Wish our season lasted this late. Always so jealous this time of year when there are still videos coming from other bikeparks and mine has snow on it already. Was that a chupacabra running after him from the right at 2:09 - 2:10?
[Reply]
  • + 3
North Star far from sucks, but there is some better riding for free. I was lucky enough to rip down Gypsy 2 weeks ago. It was a nice surprise!
[Reply]
  • + 4
Great video! But only a handful of riders are legitimate to wear a white shirt with rainbow stripes.
  • - 8
Yeah, that's a real slap in Minnars face, and spit on his shoes too. This kid has never won a real race in his life, yet he has the audacity to wear the rainbow stripes in a mtb DH film, Insulting the true accomplishments of Nico, Peatty, Minnar, Atherton, Danny Hart, Barel, Gatchet, Mike King, Dave Cullinan, Greg Herbold, John Tomac, and others.
  • + 7
Wow, wow, wow. Mikey is wearing a 510 t-shirt, T-Shirt! 510 has a few World Champs under their belt and also happens to sponsor Mikey. The strips are not on the collar and don't have a UCI badge. He is not trying to front like he's a World Champ. If you think that wearing that shirt gives you any right to talk bad on his riding, you are mistaken. The dude is a solid rider and completely owns it at Northstar. Out of all of the riders in the world, Mikey holds it down at that resort the best. He is winning every time he swings his leg over a bike, so keep your pointless name dropping of legends for a better time.
  • - 9
I don't care if 5 10 made the shirt, it's a disengenuous act for a pro racer to be wearing it in a video that will get alot of attention, even if he is just an average pro who has yet to get into a World Cup final. LMFAO @ "winning every time he swings his leg over a bike."

That's not pointless name dropping either, it's showing respect for the REAL World Champions, something this throttle-twisting scrub jumper needs to learn a lesson about.
  • + 5
I want you to actually meet Mikey. He is one of the nicest most humble people you will ever meet and I can garuntee that he has no disrespect for World Cup racers. I can also garuntee that he is faster then 99.99% of the people on this site.

The fact is, he is wearing a 5.10 shirt, and they happen to sponsor him. If you have a problem with rainbow stripes on their shirts, you should talk to 5.10.
Otherwise quit insulting and get the f*ck over yourself.
  • + 2
 Mountainyj... you're getting trolled hard.
  • - 10
He shouldn't be wearing that shirt in a video. Its misleading for a pro to wear it. Trolled hard? More like educated.
  • + 4
 Haha you're a sad little man-boy.
  • - 7
I don't care if you call me names, I'm only interested to see if you have any valid points to make in regards to the argument I am making...and of course you have nothing in that department. It's ok for a fan to wear that shirt, it's probably even ok for Sylvestri to wear it when he is at home chillin. But don't fricken wear it for a video that's gonna get posted all over the web. Hell, he hasn't even participated at World's, it's completely disrespectful.
  • + 4
The problem is the argument you're making in the first place. I don't give a shit if he wears a shirt that says "I AM GEE ATHERTON". I'll give you credit though... Along with being a sad little man-boy you're also one of the more effective trolls on PB. That's quite the accomplishment for a man-boy in his 40's.
  • - 6
I wouldn't care if he wore a shirt that said "I'm Gee Atherton", cause that would obviously only make him look stupid. Instead he is wearing the stripes that indicate that at some point in his career he won the biggest race, a race he's never competed in. There is a big difference.

Feel free to at any time make your first valid point, clones. It's easier to just hit the negative props button or call names, isn't it? But what does that say about you? A lack of substance perhaps?
  • + 3
 Haha... you're adorable.
  • + 3
Maybe he wore it in support of his teammate Holly Feniak... Or maybe he threw it on that morning and went out for a ride.
And as far as you "educating" me, that will never happen.
You ARE a troll and always have been. All your comments are attempts to start pointless arguments, the only reason I bit on this one is because I know Mikey on a personal level and consider him a friend. You have also lied and misrepresented yourself. Further up the page you posted, "Yes I have helped make some mtb movies. Look at my profile dummy."

Here you are saying to check your profile for proof of helping make videos, there is no proof. Then you say, "made you look". Sounds like something a 5th grader would do.

So until you have substance to back up your arguments I suggest you stop starting shit. I'll gladly admit that I reported you and emailed Brule. I can only recommend others do the same. You have not contributed anything relevant to this site or the community it represents. Your days ARE limited here, at some point a mod will get tired of your shit and you'll finally be gone.
  • + 5
hahahah. I love this fucking website.
  • - 4
Yeah, that was some good stuff! At least Mountainyj attempted to make a valid point; "he wore it to honor his teammate." You must have had to go real deep and get your hand really dirty to pull that one out of your ass! Creative.
  • + 3
that is a t-shirt 5 10 sells........... its not insulting anyone. also protour calling him a "average" pro is weak, try to follow him then talk shit you idiot
  • - 4
It was at least somewhat insulting to Cru Jones, and extremely insulting for me, someone who respects DH history and understands the proper rituals and hierarchy of mountainbike racing. It's also insulting to other pros, some of whom I might mention have made noise about this false act in their Twitter posts. This was a bad decision by an obviously naive racer, but I'm sure he won't repeat this mistake.

5 10 sells this shirt for fans to buy, the same kind of fans who like to wear their favorite football players jersey, you know those baggy jerseys I'm talking about? The kind that are always too big, no matter what size you buy. Sylvestri is not known as a fan, he is a current, up and coming pro who needs to respect his elders and their accomplishments, as opposed to cheapening them and all the hard work that went into earning them. The rainbow jersey doesn't come easy, just ask Peatty, it is a special accomplishment that deserves reverence, especially from your fellow professionals.
  • + 9
I understand what all of you are saying about the stripes, but its NOT a world champ jersey! And I'm not trying to fake of be something i am clearly not....want to know the truth about why I had that on. it was closing day at the mountain and I just happened to put that on that morning.... When I arrived, I ran into a friend that wanted to film abit, not knowing that was the case i didn't have any jerseys with me to wear in my truck... So What the T-shirt has the stripes on it, I didn't think people would take it out of context ... I ride for a company that has treated me like family as well hosts a list of of World champs, So wearing that represents a company of friends and family! I just wanted to clear that up...
  • + 3
You don't have to explain anything man. Anyone complaining about your t-shirt needs to find a more constructive way to spend their time.
  • + 5
Protour please shut the fuck up, your argument is merely inversely proportional as you swing too and from each end of the spectrum, you need to spend your time more productively as we can all see you are obviously quite retarded, but still think better of himself than other riders on this site. Your a joke man.
  • + 3
Tahoeripp, you don't have to justify anything bro. I don't think anybody, other than Protour, would accuse you of not respecting our sport and those who came before you to earn world championship jerseys. Everybody who has ridden with you or had the chance to meet you at Northstar or on other mountains, knows what kind of person you are. Protour needs to take some Prozac.
  • - 3
I'm ok with the explanation, and I think there is now more respect for the stripes as a result of this conversation.
  • + 1
@protour, after reading this feed I can tell you are clearly an expert. I think you should start coaching and consulting for riders like Sam Hill and Aaron Gwynn so you can share you're vast knowledge with people that will truly benefit from it.
