Don't forget: the local shop prizes are not doubled! Theses are the normal prizes and the online prizes are damn low because they sell hundred times more of that product. You gotta see it from that angle!
No i'm genuinely not kidding you: www.avantiplus.co.nz/products/dtsu0n811/title/dt-swiss-exc-150-20mm-thru-axle-carbon-fork Thats my local shop, apparently they have really cheap stuff compared to the rest of NZ, Notice too how they only stock certain brands, I talked to one of the workers, its because the guy dislikes certain brands so refuses to stock them, how they are still in business, I have no idea...
I really wish I could support local stores but not when they are dick heads, that said, SaintCycles is really brilliant for our country.
My local shops (in Lisbon) are run by incompetent, unconsiderate people, description which also fits most of the employees. They are rude to customers, expensive (10€ to press a headset), unprofessional and worst of all: bloody incompetent! left my bike there once to service the fork and bleed brakes, and when it was done my front brake pads were gone (ruined by suspension oil they used), and replaced by the most expensive ones in the shop; the bleeding was as good as shit; the suspension had the stickers ruined by the ridiculous amount of oil that was on the outside of the fork and also had the stantions were rotated each one to it's side, instead of the travel limit indicator on each leg being turned towards the front. Once ordered a bottom bracket 2 weeks before going to a bikepark, and told them i needed it in 2 weeks."oh, no problem whatsoever...a couple of days and it will be here", they said...a week went by and they didn't call me. I called them and it turns out they had called their supplyer right after i made the order, and the supplyer said they didn't have the bottom bracket in stock, and it would take a while. turns out that these f*ckers were not even going to bother themselves calling me to let me know about this. the moment they realized there was no money to be made that instant, they couldn't care less about a repeating customer's needs...and this is not just one shop, no! it's all of them!! amazing how they keep their doors open....i guess it's because they are all shit, no one raises the bar and therefore they just drag themselves along. I have learned to fix and replace almost anything on a bike because of these idiots, and online stores are the reason I can afford to do so. so yeah, in my experience: online bike shops rule and local bike shops are a f*ckING JOKE.
I would love to support my local shop if it was not 100% mark up. 40$ for cheap brake pads, 10 for a tube , God forbid someone spend 6000$ on a 3,000$ bike. I understand overhead but come on.
Only support local shops that are 'worth' supporting. Good value, good service and impartial opinions across the board. Incompetence, overpricing and arrogance are all too common these days. I do it all myself now. Online.
Most shops understand that they can't compete with online retailers, and most don't have a problem servicing a fork bought elsewhere. So save your money by buying online and get your purchase serviced locally. Service is the biggest nut for most shops anyway
I stopped supporting my local shop for anything other than parts. Last time I needed a service, I snake-bit my rear tube on my BMX. I didn't have any tools so I left it with them to change. Not only did they keep the bike overnight (I dropped it off around noon), but they charged $20 for a $5 tube...
Support Local Nazi's is just Fear mongering closed minded BS.. The lbs and Online shop can co-exist in their suburu's together in perfect harmony!! they have been doing it for years now..
And does the Online shop not also have real people with real jobs??
The smart Lbs's are also online! there are 9 lbs's that I can think of right now in my city.. They have been here for years.. Hell a new one just opened up a few months ago. ive visited and bought parts at almost all of them.. I also scour the net for good deals constantly.
I bought a complete brand new expensive bike at my lbs this season and it was great, awesome service and really great dudes.. bought a few new parts too.. However I also bought a used dh frame a few months back on here and then supplied it with 1 year old blowout, black friday, backdoor special, online madness parts that were all fairly high end parts that were all very good deals that the lbs didnt have and would have never been as cheap.. I would not have that 2nd bike if it weren't for the deals I got on parts!
I happen to work for my local bike shop and there is a lot that you guys don't see some owners don't like the way things are made they think it's a bad product they will not Carry it because why should he sell somthing he doesn't trust and when people bring forks into shops to be worked on think of it this way your being cheap by not letting a suspension expert look at it your taking it to a shop so some 17 year old kid can learn on it or some old dude who has done it a hundred times it going to do it and get it over with because it's a shit job and there's fifty people waiting on him to do somthing else and so it's not always going to be great the first time but if you take it back kindly tell them that they fucked up I'm sure they will fix there mistake free of charge.
It's a shop on a college campus. The guy is like 60, and sells only entry level Raleigh commuter bikes. And charges $20 for a tube because he can simple because most kids on campus have no clue how to work on a bike. I ended up snake biting my tube again less than an hour after I got the bike back from him, too. I'll buy tools from him still, the price is competitive enough. But no more services from him. Another local shop owner will be a dick to you if you bring your bike in for service, but didn't buy it from him initially. He gets a little condescending and rude simply because you didn't pay MSRP at his shop...
Nice argument there about the 10€ for installing a headset.
I work at a shop and would charge exactly that. Portuguese people simply don't understand the value of manual labour. The expertise, the availability to do the job, the risk of damaging the frame and the cost of the tools all add up to a cost witch I sincerily find absurd.
Browse the internet, and search for workshop fees in other countries and look how miserable our labour cost is.
Take a moment to think. If you buy a 350€ Park Tool headset press, a 10€ bucket of grease, you can take your 2000€ frame, 50€ headset, and save yourself 10€.
@joaocardoso- I completely agree about manual labor costs, But the guy I pay to do my services has made all the tools himself and does the best quality work I know of. I would happily pay a good service fee for someone who really did well (I give him usually a $5 tip for his work) Everyone else his manager hires is horrible...
I have a large bolt and two pieces of wood to install a headset... Works so well, compared to the guy that almost made my headtube an oval if I hadn't stopped him. Bike Stores need to give proper training and experience, I'm all for hiring the new dude that loves bikes and wants a job, as long as he's taught how to properly use the tools and learns on broken bikes or something? (Do I see a pinkbike article coming up? XD )
Haha I just got back from my local best buy. Basically it's a day when there are massive discounts. The catch is that most of the big discounts are on shitty TV's that are made by a company no body has ever heard of. On top of that, the stores went from opening Friday mornings, to midnight, to 8pm on Thursday. It's a crazy phenomenon.
Its the holiday of consumer SHIT!!!! Its less about thanksgiving now and more about gimme gimme!!!!!! Stupid ass people are going crazy as we speak looking through ads and planning out their shopping "Experience" so they can save a few bucks on some shit they don't need!!! By some poor kids bicycles instead!!!! Sorry got carried away....
The day when Americans run out to buy crap they don't need and give each other black eyes in the process.
Kind of like boxing day only more violent and exciting.
Its the day after thanksgiving, Americans go out to buy gifts for Christmas and it marks the start of retail going back into the "black" on their finances. It is not helped by the sales most stores put on, starting at ridiculous times. People have been stampeded to death.
Are you serious!!? That is crazy. I thought the next Boxing Day sale was bad enough. TLD D3 carbon for $280 (about ÂŁ170-175.) wish I were in the good old US of A right now. And the TLD top. Well I hope all yous guys friends and family are ok and you all have a good Christmas. Let's get those dirty dans and mud kings on and get sloppy!
Best part of economics: people are FREE to choose how and where to support the economy. I support my local shop; I buy online where my local shops don't carry (and cannot bring in) what I want.
Black Friday...
an excuse to clear out crap they can't normally sell. XXS helmets, size 48 shoes, and the cool PB t-shirts aren't even on sale. Come on people! Let's extend the Christmas buying season to a full month and a half. The deals won't be great, but you know you have to spend to feel good about yourself. I have yet to find ONE truly good deal. They either do the bait and switch, or inflate the MSRP so they can make you think you are getting a bigger discount. The real sales won't happen until a week or two after Christmas. Put an I O U under the tree and get a real deal after the purchase frenzy is over and the retailers have to motivate you to spend your money.
About the whole bike shop thing...I work at in a bike shop, get the discount rates and have the tools in the shop to work on my own bike, but if its cheaper online, I'll buy it there. I'll freely admit to customers its cheaper online, but by coming into the shop the customer gets our expertise, gets advice on stuff, or just chat about bike stuff. I don't think that we should be pissed if people buy stuff online, but hope that we get the labour when they want it fitted, and then keep coming back because of the service they get!
Thanks pinkbike for loosing me sales :/ I get chainreactio.com won't fit that bottom bracket for you. I get when all the bike shops close down because we don't make money anymore chain reaction still won't fit that bottom bracket for you
Nor will they go riding with you, go to races with you, invite you out for beers or breakfast, and have a whole group of employees to greet you with genuine affection every time you walk into the store.
I love the guys at my LBS, or, as I like to call them, my friends.
Oh puhleese, if you buy online, you install shit yourself. What sort of f*ckwit would buy a part online for 1/3 of retail and them take it to a shop for fitting. Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. Except for BBs. Buy the part and the tool for less than MSRP of the part.
@pinkbrobe, do you work in a shop? You have no idea how often people come in asking us to fit certain parts to their bike which they obviously bought online.
The most annoying thing about local shops in my region, they need up to three weeks to get me parts from their wholesellers! That is inacceptable for me. Plus certain things are just over expensive, even though they have to pay rent and less turnover than online retailers. Anyway, if I need something to be build on my bike, I try to get it at the local dude, but a saving off 50% or more, I can't resist here...
Bikes are so easy to work on with a few tools that I have no need for a local bike shop even if there was one. I could do with a headset press and truing stand but I'm not going to buy them when a hammer and a fork do the same job. All I care about is how much money is in my pocket, not a bike shop owner's pocket
lol... flack Friday... the deals they have are no different than any other times of the year.... "Save Something off Regular Retail" and free shipping is only for the lower 48.... so in Canada there is really no great incentive to purchase from any of them... wait until Cyber Monday and see them say.... "We have extended our sale" and still be the same one trick pony they all are.
Agreed, most Local Bike Shops are a rip-off with terrible service all around. I will say that the fine folks at Poison Spider Bikes in Moab Utah and the fellas at Gear Exchange Bikes in Glenwood Springs Colorado are fantastic and with reasonable or even great pricing on parts and labor. Check these shops out if you're ever in these towns!
Thank you CRC and Jensen for making local trails, servicing my bike. supporting the local race scene. Organising social rides.Doing workshops, helping with real knowledge.... Oh wait they don't!!! They suck the industry with no support and put it in their luxury cars.
Bricks and mortar shops support the mountain bike scene. If your local doesn't . CHANGE SHOPS! Then find one that does and you will soon find they give back tenfold than what the online giants do.
Oh btw- the CRC race team isn't helping the scene, it's marketing. Saving Internet trolls from making the comment
THose Marzocchi Corsa SL forks ($374.99)CANNOT be changed to 80 or 120 mm travel. The North AMerican model is stuck in its setting, while the euros have the option. Only the ones with the remote can be changed. Almost bought the same fork until dudes in North Van steered me right.
Memories, I bought my '11 fuel on Black Friday 2 yrs ago, on the ride home from the shop I told the kids "looks like santa's gonna be broke this year!"
Support your LBS when you can. Understand that the distribution is screwed and they often pay as much for the products you see on line than the advertised price. Shame on Pinkbike for promoting this type of behavior. The world needs less oligopolies. If you don't know what that is or why, then you should look it up.
Why are you doing this to me now? You damned well know my November pay must be spent on the Crimbo presents for the Mrs and everyone else! The one time I can't spend money on myself and you go and put a crazy sale on loads of stuff I would kill for. I'm furious. I tell you Pinkbike, if it wasn't for the fact you're showing a free premiere of Arrival I would delete my account!!! Ha ha.

a*sholes who are shopping for the best deal and not the service.
