All you need today is a great mechanic and a laptop...

Do you guys not understand that most of a bike shops profits come from selling bikes and repair work? You should definitely support your local shop, but if you think component sales are what keeps them in business then you are mistaken.

so what your saying is they make no money on mark up of selling worn out products? hmm.. I have to re-think that one.
  • 3 1
i do my best to support local bike shops but it can be frustrating, yesterday I needed a tire and had to call 4 different shops to find someone stocking an all mtn tubeless tire.
  • 21 1
Well here in Puertorico lbs don't have most of the shit I need, so what they do? Order throughout the internet, and over charge me for it. Now one thing is to support the lbs, another thing is to be completely stupid. Also, you don't have to go to a lbs to get your bike fixed, there's plenty of independent mechanics who are willing to charge the right price to fix your bike. Actually my mechanic has worked for many lbs, and he went independent because he got tired of getting underpaid, and having the owner's friends getting freebies and getting maintenance and repairs ahead of the rest of the clients, not to say when they come and hang out at the shop, use the tools and leave a mess all over when you are not around, and lets not forget the owners gf or family who come around and do and take as they like. So don't give me the bull shit of "you have to support you lbs" . Trust me I've tried.
  • 6 1
Who in their right mind would go to their local bike shop and pay an arm and a leg for bike stuff when they can get it at close to half the cost online? Not that I am against supporting bike shops, but unless one is swimming in disposable income, that doesn't make any sense. Especially for poor college kids like me who do not have that kind of money...thank you pinkbike for posting these deals
  • 4 0
I am happy to pay 10%-15% more in local shop but only if they have stuff straight from the shelf, no waiting involved. If shop has to order items for me, what is the point of paying more if you can get it online? Nevertheless I have bought many items in local shop just because there was no waiting for delivery. Seems like some bike shop owners are not making a notes of what are customers asking for.
  • 3 1
Norcalrider16, you are right. It is pretty stupid, even if you are rich, to pay more than you have too. I understand that the lbs have to mark up their products to make some money because they are a couple steps down the supply chain. Online retailers have the advantage of direct to the manufacture and volume, that's how they can offer lower prices. I almost always, without a doubt, order my components online, that is the cheapest way, plus I can shop in my underwear!
  • 1 0
Yea I would love to be able to support my local bike shop but they don't even carry street bikes or parts, They have to order everything in it takes longer than it does for me to get it shipped online and it costs way more. I can't afford to use the bike shop, not to mention the workers don't know anything about street bikes because they are not very popular in my city.

Stupid fucking pinkbike!! SUPPORT LOCAL SHOPS!!! Good one pinkbike figure your shit out..i see you sold out and took the giant cash grab. If any of you just asked for a discount at your local shop you would probably get what you wanted and cheap and quicker. But one more time fuck you pinkbike you mine as well sellout some more and sell your company to chain reaction as the blog site.

@Thedeadsailor LOL LBS not making money off components. You think small shops are selling a high end bike or 2 everyday to keep the lights on? Also, labour for a bike mechanic is pretty affordable, at probably around $60/hr, plus most shops are now offering 1 year free servicing on a new bike, some go as far as lifetime. Not sure how a service shop can keep the lights on when they're churning out free tune-ups all day...
  • 1 0
If the mechanics actually did a thorough job of it then sure, use them. Two bad experiences involved a shifter cable being pulled through but left loose and the worst was a hydraulic line not tightened properly. No shifting and no brakes. Both were services right before an isolated 76 km ride on the Queen Charlotte Track. Rather do things myself.
  • 2 0
Well Dunbar IS a local bike shop in Vancouver so, order from those guys and everybody is Happy!
  • 15 4
And this is one of the fringe benefits to the popularity of 650B... sure it kills the used value on 26er stuff but it also leads to massive inventory clearouts of 26er stuff that people still liking that wheelsize can now afford to buy.
  • 1 1
right on deeeight! so for those die hard fans of 26" wheels, this is your chance.

The Problem that I experienced when ordering from Chain reaction was that when the products when through customs I was charged taxes based on the MSRP rather then the sale price of the item. That was a bit of a head scratcher as I can't figure out why this was done. If a retailer decides to sell something at a lower cost I pay the tax on that cost not MSRP.
  • 3 0
Customs charges taxes based on the declared value of the goods + a handling fee. These two things combined would make it look like you had to pay tax on MSRP.
  • 1 0
That doesn't seem right. Local sales taxes should be based on the net invoice price, plus applicable duties. At least that is my understanding of import taxation.
  • 7 5
No doubt they look at the invoice on the outside of the box, or open it to see if there's an invoice inside, look up the model codes in a search engine and find the actual MSRP.
  • 2 0
Ive never gotten charged taxes and ive bought a lot of stuff on CRC
  • 6 0
CRC shipments are hit and miss for taxes/duty I'm not sure why. Another curious thing... why does the Canadian gov spend millions to promote healthy living, yet they slap down an extra 7% on bike parts and accessories? wtf we those parts to keep them running.
  • 2 0
It is hit or miss. I once had an order, 3 pieces, and requested regular ground service through good ol' Canada post as they tend to charge less of a fee for brokerage, pretty constant at $9.95 or something like that, whereas UPS charges upwards of $40.

CRC retains the right to split your order, they did in this instance and decided to ship a 3rd part that was back ordered by courier to get it to me faster and make up for the back order. It was a $20 item, UPS tried to soak me for $40 in brokerage so I just refused the shipment and then absolutely blasted CRC customer service.

That was my last and final order from CRC.
  • 1 0
@robwhynot, Im not positive of your situation, but it sounds like CRC tried doing you a favor by splitting it up...

  • 5 0
 welcome to pinkbike
  • 9 12
Oh I KNOW how pinkbike is.
  • 1 1
@gordon2456 - perhaps, but their attempt was a big fail, imo… especially since I wrote a comment on the order begging them not to ship by any method other than Canada Post.
  • 1 1
My Issue was not with having to pay for the import duties as such, but rather with CRC declaring the package with MSRP rather then what I paid for it. I am aware of my responsibilities ( most of the time) when importing and it is a balance between a good deal and a trip to the LBS when you calculate taxes, shipping and exchange rates. When you buy an item at say 50% off but then pay twice the tax on it, it bites into your good deal margin. I don't know why CRC declares the MSRP rather than the Price at which I paid.
  • 3 4
It could be they declare the MSRP because of a british export law, or because they're insuring for the FULL value because if the package gets lost/damaged, and they have to refund you or replace it, they want to make money doing that.
  • 1 2
Pretty sure at least the USPS considers that fraud and is a felony. Maybe that's why I have never seen them do that to my packages.
  • 2 4
Yes but USPS laws don't apply to other countries postal users. CRC is in the UK, the only laws they have to follow are the UK and European union laws.
  • 2 0
Fair point Deeeight, but I see no reason why they cannot insure for the value but still have an invoice for the country of destination as to what was paid for the product. I could buy a $ 10000 diamond but only pay $100 for it. Sh!tty analogy I know but, value and price paid are quite different. Then again to call my knowledge of import and tax laws ignorant would be a very generous statement.
  • 1 4
Because you can legally only insure for the declared customs value, so sellers mark up the customs values to match the needed insurance value if they have to replace it.
  • 3 0
If the diamond requires insurance and you claim it is worth 100 dollars, guess what you get if it gets lost?
  • 2 1
I would imagine that is still fraud. Being as that you lost 9900 more or less whether you sold it for 100 or the carrier lost it.
  • 2 4
Then don't buy online. Because that's a widespread practice for sellers across many industries. The laws on that are pretty universal. As a shipper, you can't under declare a value to avoid customs and likewise you can't try and claim more insurance than its customs value, and its pretty stupid to under insure something that might need to be replaced.
  • 1 1
When was I complaining about crc or online sellers? Point was don't try it. Customs looks for people that do such things
  • 2 4
Actually customs looks for bombs, drugs, food, bundles of cash, kiddie porn, etc... actual serious illegal stuff. They really don't give a damn on insured values. If you think US customs is going to flag a parcel for investigation because of the declared insurance value... well.... good luck with that.
  • 4 0
I've only ever paid taxes on the invoiced price of goods I've received. Much like when I go to the grocery store and buy a bag of chips that are on sale, I pay taxes on the sale price, not the listed price. Or when you buy a new vehicle at the end of a model year and it is on clearance pricing from the dealership, you would pay taxes on the price you agreed to buy it at, not the MSRP.
  • 2 2
 Do not question D8.
  • 2 0
Canada customs says you pay duty on the value of an item. We all know that MSRP is totally not the value of an item.
  • 1 3
yes, and if canada customs finds evidence or suspects the value is understated (they X-ray practically all incoming mail so they know what's inside) they will adjust the duty/taxes accordingly. Got a problem with that, complain to canada customs.

I'm sad, great deals on the SB66 frames. Too bad I don't have enough to spare right now, I so want one!

Just picked up the Complete SB66C Enduro from Competitive Cyclist. Ordered on Sunday, was at my door, fully assembled (correctly I might add) by Wednesday. To me that is unreal. I can't speak highly enough of them.
  • 1 0
I love Comp Cyclist! Great customer service too, they've even had the attention to call and make sure that my credit cards weren't used fraudulently because of an address change, and their returns are hassle free, no questions asked. Like Nasty, just can't say enough good things about them.

Damn, it's sad when I own a bike shop and can't get parts for these prices even on pro deal.

Got all excited about the Bronson but there only a smalls... :o(
My mate got one and he's killing me! 11.1kgs of trail weaponry!

Leaning towards a Giant Trance 1, thoughts? Good bang for buck in my eye and only a shmackle over 13kg.

In Canada, (Ontario anyway) there is 13% tariff on imported bikes... making all of these deals on complete builds, not really deals at all. Support your local shop when you can and keep bike culture alive in Canada.
  • 1 2
soooooo. where will everyone go when the shops are all closed and you need a part ASAP?? straight to the confession box for admitting they bought totally online so the shops couldnt compete and closed. BTW, when the majority of these shops are shut. be sure to repent when the online retailers put their prices right up.. and they will.
its happened to a ton of other retail industrys.

  • 3 0
Thats a good price on the sb66c!
  • 1 0
yeah, I might be missing something, but why is it going away if jared graves had such a good performance on that bike?, both Enduro and DH
  • 1 0
@ReformedRoadie are you sure? I thought they were keeping both around. According to the Vital test crew the SB75 is quite a different animal from the 66.
  • 1 0
It's not going away it's because of the recent release of the SB-75 shops are trying to clear out 2013 stuff to make room for the new stuff. Look on yeti's site the have the SB-66 reg, carbon, and comp. The 2014 SB-66 comp build is only $2900 which is everything the enduro build has except evolution suspension instead of factory series.

The 66 is stopping production. Get one while you can.
