Martin Söderström has travelled the world to secure numerous podiums on the FMB World Tour over the past few years and on the 28th September, he will invite some of the world’s best slopetyle mountain bikers to his home town of Uppsala for his first signature event ‘Martin Söderström Invitational’. For those who can’t make it to Sweden, you can watch the event from 15:00 (CET) on SVT Play .

Martin Soderstrom’s road to the top started in 2007 with an edit posted on YouTube, spreading across the world. The following year he competed internationally with top results in a series of slopestyle events in Europe. Since 2009, the young Swede is one of the world’s best riders and only last year just missing out on clinching the overall title of the FMB World Tour.

“The ‘Martin Söderström Invitational’ will be the highlight of the year in my home town Uppsala. The crowds will get an awesome show and will experience something they’ve never seen before”, says Martin.

The invited riders, amongst them his Swedish buddy and 2013 rising star Anton Thelander, will compete on a course which starts on the courtyard of Uppsala Castle and finishes below in the Botanic Garden. One of its eye-catching features is a big gap jump over a two lane road, forcing the riders to clear almost 15 meters of air. ”The jumps are spectacular, built to stretch boundaries and give room for new tricks”, Martin smiles furtively.

Hosting from the sideline
Unfortunately, as we all know Martin Soderstrom won't be able to ride at his own event. His crash at Red Bull Joyride during the Crankworx Festival in August sent him to the emergency room with a broken leg and an expected ten weeks on crutches. Instead he will dive deeper into the role of a host for his own signature event, supported by his fans via social media under the hashtags #GetWellMartin or #MSinvitational. “I’m so psyched about the event, and grateful for all the support. Now, I’m looking forward to bring my sport to Uppsala, even if I can’t ride myself. Despite the crash, I’m satisfied with my season and committed to come back in 2014 to go for the overall win of the FMB World Tour”, concludes Martin.

Competition format
The competition starts with a jam session where the riders are free to drop in and ride the track as often as they want. The 45 minute session decides the rider ranking. The best eight riders will qualify for the final, where they will compete head-to-head in two runs against each other. The best rider compared to the last, second best against second-last, etc... The best rider moves to the next round and finally the winner remains.

Invited riders:
1. Pavel Alekhin Vishneviy (RUS)
2. Andreu Lacondeguy (ESP)
3. Sam Pilgrim (GBR)
4. Yannick Granieri (FRA)

that would be sick, making your own big ass bikepark and then ride the trails!
  • 24 0
...or you could grab a shovel and build trails outside you can actually ride... Would be a fun game, though. I'm sure I'd play it!

I think US and Canadian riders were wellcomes, but just don't want to travel so far just for this event. Same for Euro riders at some American contests

If my neck on my T-shirt was that stretched out my mom would throw it away.

That picture of him makes it look like he's wearing a moo-moo nightie, you couldn't find a better one? lol
  • 2 0
has anyone thought that maybe he invited riders (friends) that already committed to doing it and also and more importantly Red Bull is 2 weeks after that and a different style that I am sure everyone is trying to get dialed. just maybe
  • 3 0
He's simply giving what would be the North American boys spot to some lesser know local talent. A chance for them to recieve some mainstream exposure, nothing wrong with that. Too far for the Canadians and Americans anways .
  • 1 0
looks interesting. a smaller event, but with the potential to build to the size of the bearclaw... bad timing just before rampage though. i reckon its still worht the watch and will tune in for the nice finals format. they will last a while and give riders the chance tohold back during the jam and hten go hard when it counts!
  • 3 0
i am from europe but i also find it weird that there isn't any rider from america or canada invited
  • 3 0
"Invited some of the best slope style rides" Americans aren't invited ouch haha
  • 2 0
A lot of top riders publicly trashed him and a few other euros for pussying out at X games. That's probably why they weren't invited.
  • 3 2
US and Canadians are obviously not doing the trip for an event that's not even on FMB calendar, not even because they only go to the gold ones.
  • 2 0
I made my blood pressure go up after what I did.....if he comes back after a wrecked leg/conscious he is a mastermind
  • 3 1
Were are some of the other big names at ??
  • 1 0
I keep getting wack dash notices for "little shred man's comments".....WHY ME???
  • 2 1
No invites from North America? Hmmm, seems weird.

 PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVEL!!!!!!!
  • 1 0
when would it start in vancouver?
  • 5 4
 Waaaat? Only 4 features?
  • 8 7
 Its only 3
  • 4 3
And? competition is still a competition. Who cares how many features are there.
  • 12 3
In most cases a drop, two gaps and a quarter pipe adds up to 4.
  • 4 1
Yes, but a drop, two gaps and a podium add up to three...
  • 3 2
 but his leg?
  • 5 0
it says in the article, he wont be riding
  • 11 12
Silly Euros not inviting any Americans.
  • 6 2
Yeah... whats with that? I mean its his event, he can pick who he wants, bit still...
  • 19 1
They probably didn't want to make the 24 hour trip for an event which isn't on the FMB world tour.
  • 8 1
What makes you think that inviting any Americans is obligatory?
Silly 'Murican.
  • 2 0
Eh...I would make the trip A because its Martin sodestrom that freaking invited me B. because the North American season is over so its opportunity to ride during the off season C. It's a chance to ride in Europe what isn't there to ride in Europe.... It's a 24hr plane ride to go shred it up in a new land with whole new bits of excitement, happiness, shred, publicity, exploration, and its a trip abroad to ride ur bike.... Sounds epic in general to me!!!
  • 1 0
Because we are getting OBAMACARE...goodbye capitalism
  • 5 7
i think he#s scrared of north americans Big Grin
  • 2 0
He's not even riding, but still...
