MUST WATCH Video: Danny MacAskill on the Edge of Cliffs

Oct 2, 2014 at 7:15
by rasoulution

Today, Danny MacAskill launched his brand new mountain bike edit, “The Ridge”. Filmed on his home island, the Isle of Skye, the video shows Danny tackling a never ridden before ridge on a full suspension mountain bike. Conquering epic terrain, riding death defying cliffs and climbing up to the heavenly peaks, the clip has it all.

by Chris Prescott

Supported by Five Ten and ENVE Composites, the film has been created by Stu Thomson and his team at Cut Media. This edit resonates a real cinematic feel with jaw dropping images and climatic atmosphere. However, capturing the stunning shots presented some challenges for the experienced filmer: “It was certainly one of the most demanding locations we’ve ever filmed, but a rewarding one at the same time. Danny and I are very proud of being from Scotland so it was great to be able to show off the amazing landscape along with Danny’s incredible riding.”

by Cut Media

Danny MacAskill’s technical riding skills shine through the gnarly terrain with rocks the sizes of small cars, unforgiving lines and huge cliff drops so close to the trail. You might find it somewhat strange seeing Danny on a full suspension mountain bike but for him it was a long-term wish to explore the Isle of Skye: “Ever since I was a kid growing up on Skye I have always dreamt about riding a bike up on the Cuillin ridge! The project took a lot of planning and was probably one of the most physically demanding films I have ever worked on! It was definitely a labour of love though as I wanted to show off the island for how it is and make everyone who lives there proud to be from this amazing part of the world.”

That was sick to see Danny's skills on a mountain bike, filming was amazing, and I can't imagine how diffictult it was to film let alone get up there, nice job!

just saw his video and now my hand is sweating
  • 57 2
i wouldn't even want to walk those exposed edges. no room for error. amazing riding. that front endo flip off the fence was amazing
  • 12 1
Yeah, 'effin thanks Danny, by doing that on that bike you've just taken away the excuse that I had for not being able to ride like that.
  • 29 2
The drone peak and lake shots made me shed a little tear of joys, which then evaporated when my heart rate skye rocketed seconds later. Greatest Athlete on earth, and flawless film making.
  • 19 1
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?! Is this real life???? Now all i need to do is re-learn how to ride my bike again..... Danny, bravo!
  • 79 3
And he was like... 'what the hell is Red Bull Rampage?!'
  • 20 1
I was sweating during that scene where he's climbing that narrow ridge. I would shit myself just climbing that, let along carrying a bike.
  • 12 6
#freenduro ? That whole vid was mental...and then the fence.
  • 5 0
thing that i still ASK myself his Skill, his name macaskill, is it his real name or artist name? a bit like alex pro...
this video was again super tech and super skill, hes a real artist so are his team members that help him with finding his path...
this is what makes an artist right inspiration... and skill. but we can keep telling how much of skill he has,, we oursleves with maybe less skill should do our best to find our path our adventure and learn to go further than we first tought we could.

What's in his bag a parachute?
  • 3 0
Danny always puts a big smile on my face !
  • 34 0
Having just watched Danny's skills in this video I cant belive how much I have in common with him... We both have saint brakes. And thats about it really.
  • 2 1
I know what you mean, I own a Santa Cruz Bronson but only the name is the same. His wheels cost more than my whole bike.
  • 11 0
 And his riding justifies it....
  • 6 1
Trails on a full suspension = very hard. This video = f*cked. That was beyond anything else. I bet the Pope's robes were brown after watching this.
  • 8 0
now the question is.......Where 'da hell is the boat ?!
  • 4 0
had to stop watching this vid from god damn anxiety
  • 42 0
Don't know if I was more impressed by the actual riding or that he did it all with wet socks.
  • 10 0
Bugger me! Frodo and Sam sure could've done with a 2015 Santa Cruz Bronson!! Good work Danny!
  • 2 0
On a mountain bike? He always rides a mountain bike!!!!! :s
  • 2 0
Sick to see Danny on a Santa Cruz but sheeet... there's no retakes from up there!!!

 Video Of the Year, please.
  • 2 0
About the boat ... Danny had just crossed over to the other side, so the boat may take awhile. Unless of course, he was just resting to make the return trip. Amazing ...
  • 125 0
Note to self - When crashing OTB - hold on.
That fronty off/over the fence was something else, wow.
  • 5 0
when he hit the fence i had a wave of "what the f*ck, he just made it down the hardest thing possible and he falls by hitting a fence!", go through my mind.
  • 8 0
 DANNY STAY ON YA BIKE!!!!!!!!!!
  • 1 0
^ hahaha my favorite video on Youtube XD
  • 103 0
He front flipped a fence. ARE YA KIDDING ME DANNY LAD?
  • 47 0
 Fence with barbed-wire, none-the-less
  • 20 0
Looks like he didn't land the first attempt: instagram.com/p/tpoqK1QmHV
  • 3 1
 fence. with barbed-wire. on a full-sus. wow.
  • 9 0
I know. It's a joke. I would probably rip my jeans climbing over it.
  • 88 3
 Stay on your bike Danny!!
  • 17 5
When I read this comment I automatically hear Rob Warner's voice at the back of my mind. lol
  • 8 0
I WOULD NOT HAVE DONE THAT! DANNY IS AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND!
  • 30 0
FYI, "Danny, stay on your bike!" was Nigel Page
  • 2 0
I said that outloud to myself when he was riding the ridge
  • 68 0
i can't believe he did that with his shoes wet. brilliant
  • 4 0
 5.10's are brilliant.
  • 14 0
The 5.10s are still probably wet.
  • 3 0
 good luck drying those out
  • 66 0
 @6:30

See Danny, you should have tied your boat up.
  • 11 0
I was thinking the same the thing Smile
  • 4 1
@redcom: got on to make that comment, but yours was better anyway
  • 2 1
Not really a surprise when it was gone upon return was it
  • 5 2
Of course the boat wasn't there! it was a different beach.
  • 44 0
The thing that would suck about being Danny is you would have to ride alone
  • 40 5
Would love to see Danny have a crack at something like Rampage. His trials skills on some super steep and tech gnar would be awesome! I think with the right prep he would nail some of the bigger features as well. Do it Danny!
  • 3 1
 Wetness
  • 65 1
To be honest I consider Danny an artist, he paints his interpretation on the terrain. I would hate for anyone to try to judge or score his art form. It is something different to each one of us. It shows me a sense of freedom and creativity that is endless and limiting it by a venue or judgement (scoring) would ruin it in my opinion. Add to this his humility and considerate personality and you have a gem of a talent among the world of mountain biking legends.
  • 10 0
@dirtypants That's probably the best, most considered comment I've ever read on Pinkbike. Very well said mate.
  • 4 0
Yeah throw a few random fences in at rampage and you will be in for a show haha
  • 2 0
Thanks @dirtypants for this wonderful comment. Nails it!
  • 1 0
I've seen an interview where he said he used to compete in trials and he was rubbish. He preferred video riding. Not everyone is meant to be a contest rider. That said, incredible talent no doubt!
  • 27 0
what a gorgeous mountain bike film. I'v not seen anything this good in so long. Danny is a legend
  • 24 1
I'll never let a fence stop me from riding illegal trails again.
  • 3 2
..... and he is on the hospital right now
  • 22 0
Did Danny get signed to Santa Cruz or did they just sponsor this video?
  • 5 0
Inspired Bikes ain't produce enduro bikes ... yeah it seems he actually got a lot af new sick brands (Santa Cruz, Enve, Evoc.... ) who're interested in him, which is not astonishing
  • 5 0
he used to ride for orange prior to this ..i think.. i love seeing him ride endure bikes in trails fashion, its much more entertaining as most of us can relate to how seemingly impossibly the things he is doing are
  • 4 0
Always thought I had seen him on Orange-bikes in some former non-trial edits.... Times change ;-)
  • 1 0
Awesome. Every of his videos is piece of art...

Funny, I also noted not-tied boat immediately... You do not do it by any mean Smile

He should be riding Cotic. That would be stylish...
  • 22 0
Some of those exposed ridges actually made me feel queesy!
  • 5 0
 +1 ...I felt physically sick!
  • 20 1
Can we get Danny an invite to Rampage 2015!?
  • 10 0
he is the only one who will go uphill ! haha or creating rampage from bottom to top with you own line
  • 18 0
Did he mean to ride into a fence because it worked out very well for him...
  • 17 0
Each time I watch a new MacAskill film I'm left thinking, well what next? Surely there's no way to top that. Then the next film comes out...
  • 20 2
I'm suprised he dosent fall of that mountain with the weight of his balls
  • 15 0
Why do I feel like a nervous parent watching this??

Dear Danny: please don't kill yourself.

Signed,
Everyone
  • 6 0
 Don't worry, man. He's wearing 5.10s -- he can't slip. And a helmet.
  • 15 0
ok I'll try to slam on a fence tomorrow....I want to see what happens... I'll keep you informed
  • 2 0
I take that it didn't go so well? Hope you heal up quick, bud.
  • 13 1
Unless you've climbed on the Skye ridge you can't truly appreciate this.. What he's doing there is straight up insanity, and I think this has to be his most dangerous/impressive video yet!
  • 5 0
Agree, for once I was left speechless!
  • 2 0
Well it is not 100% visible that he really climbed all way up.. Which makes sense... he is pro and any mistake at that height and sharp rocks is lethal
  • 11 0
Every now and then a particular person finds a sport they were born for. Kelly Slater, Rodney Mullen, Lionel Messi, Donald Bradman. It's just so simple for them. This guy is one of those.
  • 13 0
Macaskill and Akrigg really need to put an enduro-trials edit together!!
  • 3 0
They actually did with Road Party 2 after Martyn Ashton had his accident.
  • 2 1
I know. But that is not very enduroish...
  • 2 0
Yeah, not very enduroish.....he needed a bigger backpack in that one to truly cross the line into enduro awesomeness.
  • 10 0
Jawdropping. That's all I can say. I am genuinely speechless.
  • 10 0
Oh man, hope that was a parachute in his backpack. Crazy mf!
  • 10 1
That video left some gnar in my shorts
  • 6 0
this is best mtb video ever... so beautiful and so dangerous..and so....so...oh my god this is video of year or decade man... he makes me buy that ridiculously expensive sanatcruz bike now...
  • 8 0
Wow that was stunning! Great filming and riding! nice to see Danny on a full susser!
  • 8 0
I wonder what suspension set up he's got, climb-trials-decend?

Sick!
  • 4 0
As a biker and a rock climbing, this film is simply the best! The Cuillin is an incredible place, and to see Danny dropping into that terrain is very special. I was left wondering if he was going to drop in from the top of the Inaccessible Pinnacle. Most people use a rope to get up there, and there is Danny bike on shoulder just dancing up the rockrace. I bet he was glad of the Stealth rubber. Beautiful film.
  • 1 0
I'm guessing the helicopter dropped him on top for that shot. Or someone guided him up with ropes. You can't scramble up the in pin , certainly not with an bike on your back
  • 1 0
I think he did! I've soloed it with trainers on. Its very easy for a rock climber, but more impressive for Danny because he is'nt and he does have the bike on his shoulder. The helmet cam shows him actually on the Inn Pinn route, and you can see the bike on his shoulder, and there is not a rope in sight!
  • 7 1
Rowing is a dangerous sport... Good thing he had his Redbull Helmet on while crossing the water Wink

Amazing riding, regardless.
  • 1 0
I was thinking about when he was rehabbing his back how much he hated the row machine. I wonder if that was his idea.
  • 7 0
As always, Danny M.. You are so A.W.E.S.O.M.E !!!
  • 6 0
Another new type of front flip? People were just now mastering the yoga ball one!
  • 6 0
Just when you think, that Rampage is the most sickest thing you can do on a MTB.
  • 5 0
Danny MacAskill has yet again proved he is the best technical mountain biker in the world. That fence flip was pretty cool as well!!!
  • 6 2
I think Akrigg has always been a better all-around rider, BUT Danny is totally matching that now by stepping up his game and showing what he can do on a full suspension trail bike. I would say it's now Akrigg's move. Not that its a competition or anything Smile
  • 6 0
You know, I've always been partial to Akrigg, mostly because his riding is more relatable. Danny has been mostly street, until now. Love it!
  • 2 1
Akriggs next video is a fat bike edit. Wish that was a joke.....
  • 2 0
Fine by me. I have one in my stable. They are quite capable in rock chunk and I'm sure Akrigg could do some impressive things with one. Throw some carbon wheels on a lightweight build. The Mongoose options I've seen aren't so stellar, though.
  • 1 1
Though I'm not a fatbike fan, I have been wanting to see Akrigg on one. Above I said "Akrigg's move" but honestly Akrigg never seems to give a shit what anyone else is doing. With Akrigg's "Five" and "ChrisCross" it's obvious that versatility is his one-up on everyone else rather than a penis measuring contest. Both guys are insane though.
  • 8 3
The part where he is carrying his bike, that's a stunt double, the real Danny doesn't carry bikes
  • 7 1
I think we just found a new Rampage site.....
  • 2 0
SKYE is one of the most beautiful places i have ever seen. Must be such a cool place to call home! Standing on top of that peak must have been such an amazing feeling let alone front flipping a barbed wire fence. I bet the fence was scarier though haha
  • 4 0
There are a handful of people in this world who are born to do a certain thing. Danny was born to ride bikes. An absolute legend.
  • 2 0
If I ever rode there I would probably have to quit mountain biking seeing that I could never ride in a prettier place ever again. Surreal feel to the film, great job on the part of the people behind the camera and excellent riding by Danny.
  • 5 0
i would love to see what his tune is for that DBAir. all that hopping around has to lend to some gnarly settings.
  • 2 0
 Same here!!!
  • 3 0
Stiff as shit. Probably un-rideable on normal trails with the low speed cranked all the way closed.
  • 1 0
not necessarily.. it's a DBAir with the CS. i mean granted in the open position it is probably still stiff, but i bet he hops around with the switch closed
  • 1 0
I paused the video a bunch of times and I can't see his suspension compressing at all during the trials parts.
  • 2 0
Awesome Video! I did not think i would ever see Danny MacAskill carry a bike up something on his back in my lifetime. Knowing there is limits even for him will make me so feel so much better the next time i am bending a rim trying to clear a curb...
  • 5 0
Epic is often over used, but this was truly epic.
  • 5 0
I can believe all the shit I just saw. My life is a lie.
  • 3 0
I would love to go there! I just wouldn't even bother bringing my bike... The scenery and riding were both incredible! Never seen anything like it.
  • 4 0
Just amazing. Probs the best video I ever seen. Awesome riding and some epic film making. Well done!
  • 4 0
This is my favorite video from him! Much better than that playboy thing, this was the real deal! And that Bronson... Smile
  • 2 0
I've been to Skye and can honestly say it is one of the most beautiful, unspoilt places on earth. Watching him ride such incredible scenery with world-class skill completed my day!
  • 4 0
The most moving piece of mountain bike cinematography I've ever seen, a spot formerly held by Life Cycles.
  • 3 0
Why didn't I think about such an easy way of getting over fences, don't even need to touch the barbed wire...
  • 4 0
 This video is breathtaking.
  • 2 1
I like how the title shot over the lake is supposed to be this calm swooping shot but really he has a helicopter flying 4 feet above his head. Unless they used a unmanned rig. Then it's slightly less terrifying.
  • 2 1
Lol helicopter above his head that would worse than that climb. ! they use a thing called a dron a remote control helicopter with a cam on the bottom
  • 4 0
If you read the credits, there is a drone pilot mentioned. A chopper would have blown him off the ridge too, not pretty!
  • 1 1
Thanks other Warren. Didn't make it that far in the video yet.
  • 4 0
This guy never stops blowing my mind
  • 5 2
Was the point of this video to show what happens when you don't tie up your boat? "Boating ProTips with Danny Macaskill"
  • 5 0
 Well I suck...
  • 1 0
Awesome....although did think it would be best to tie the boat up and was proven right as it had floated off by time he d got back and had to sit on the beach waiting to be rescued lol
  • 4 0
i was waiting for morgan freeman to start narrating
  • 2 0
Reminds me of some of the old Hans Rey adventure videos from back in the 90's/early 2000's. Mixed with some Chris Akrigg action, you have a real winner of an edit...
  • 1 0
Man Danny always has something under his belt. This video proves he is all around the best trials rider in the world on any terrain. Props to Danny this is how you progress the sport.
  • 2 0
He just put the mountain into 'mountain biking'! I'm thinking all the riding I've done has just been 'biking' compared with this shenanigans!!
  • 1 0
Insane. The Inn Pin stuff was amazing. The real insanity was on Collies Ledge. Sgurr nan Gilean is mental. Climbed it. The Cuillins are hairy on foot. The Isle of Skye is magical. Love it.
  • 3 0
Amazing edit and riding. I love Danny's edits because they are always top notch. Now I want to go to Skye.
  • 4 0
I was crying at 3:15. Have to go to Scotland. With or without bike.
  • 4 0
i feel sick. that was mental
  • 2 0
The best thing about this awesome movie is clean beauty of landscape and riding a bike. It's so nice to see so clean video. Danny's skills are beyond comprehension.
  • 4 1
So that's how you're meant to bunny hop over a fence... :-)
  • 3 0
This video is so inspiring ! And this final front flip just killing it Wink
  • 3 0
Ahhh now your shoes are all wet...
  • 2 0
Not a single full face helmet to be seen. Confidence is high, repeat confidence is high
  • 2 0
so stoked to see Danny on a mountain bike. i'm preety sure what he does is illegal: riding with excessive steaze
  • 2 0
cool combination - (Bronson, the Isle of Skye, MacAskill) equals spectacular results...and the fence jump!!!
  • 1 0
One of the best video I've seen in a long time ! More of these please ! Brilliant soundtrack, huge and beautiful landscapes, excellent rider, it just works.
  • 1 0
The only thing that could have made this short film better would have been a base jump from the peak he climbed up. Regardless, stunning cinematography and amazing riding!
  • 1 0
Genuinely got sweaty palms and felt my heart rate pick up watching him ride down some of those razor-thin ridges. Danny Mac has raised the bar again!
  • 1 0
The landscape is so beautiful. I'm stunned by the beautiful scenery equally as by his precise skill. Riding there would be a true experience.
  • 5 1
 DANNY STAY ON YA BIKE!!!
  • 3 0
I enve the bike and the riding.
  • 2 0
ok I'll try to slam on a fence tomorrow....I want to see what happens... I'll keep you informed
  • 2 0
This just in: I am not as good at being on my feet as Danny is on two wheels.
  • 3 0
So can we finally put the whole "Is carbon strong enough?" thing to rest?
  • 2 0
Bronson owners are feeling pretty damn good right now. Hell, I own some 3 year old Freeriders and I feel great.
  • 3 2
His balls are bigger than danny hart's one, even after his champery run....
  • 3 0
 lost for words.
  • 2 0
That was just incredible! Right there with A Hill In Spain.

man I'd hate to ride with wet shoes...
  • 2 0
 Danny...always amazes with great stories
  • 1 0
I got so scared at 4:52 because I couldn't see the landing! Even with it there that's still pretty big. Sick stuff!
  • 1 0
If I get me 510s freeriders soaking wet like that they are horrible and take ages to dry out.
  • 1 0
But how did he get down from the top of the very very top ridge?? It never shows him come down from that!!
  • 1 0
He took his bike apart and abseiled
  • 1 0
Speachless! Stupid question though, does anyone know what Evoc pack he is wearing?
  • 2 0
Danny should be invited to Rampage next year!
  • 1 0
Say, has anyone tested Danny for being an Alien, because this is not human what he is pulling! OMFG.
  • 1 0
I have crashed with fences before, why I didn´t try a front flip?.... wait! I haven´t those skills
  • 1 0
Wow, having climbed the ridge its mental to think he's still alive !!!!. amazing skill
  • 1 0
Getting the bike un that rocky peak and have he chopper flying around is as sensefull as bringing the bike to the oceanfloor
  • 1 1
Is he sponsored by Santa Cruz and ENVE now and is he training for Enduro. That's all I could think seeing him on a FS. Great Vid. Dry your feet your gonna catch a cold!
  • 2 5
Did you miss the part in the beginning of the video where is said sponsored by santa cruz and enve.... etc
  • 7 0
it is said enve and fiveten, not SC? or i missed something?
  • 2 0

  • 1 0
Next year, let's watch Danny ride UP the Rampage course.
  • 1 0
it would be interesting to see him at rampage.
  • 1 0
There needs to be a new word to describe this kind of awesome.
  • 1 0
Wow that was incredible. On a side note, which Five Tens are those?
  • 1 0
Wow, that frontflip at the end was super cool
  • 1 0
