by Richard Cunningham
Expanding the options for consumers to connect with Shimano for experiences in sports, the leading cycling, fishing and rowing product manufacturer today introduced the CM-1000 Sport Camera. Continuing Shimano’s legacy of innovation and quality, the CM-1000 enters the compact sport camera category with a lightweight and compact high-definition video camera with advanced connectivity options.

Shimano's new sports camera is truly waterproof and syncs with both iPhone and Android smart phones. Shimano has been working on this project for quite a long time, so we anticipate that it will rate highly among the sport's many POV addicts.

The CM-1000 marks the company’s first product introduction from its Lifestyle Gear Division, targeting both fishing and cycling consumers, providing them opportunities to enjoy capturing their various sporting experiences as incredibly high quality photos and HD videos. Years of research and design went into Shimano’s CM-1000, ultimately creating a compact sport camera that excels in critical camera functions, appeals to consumers exploring terrestrial and aquatic sports, and also integrates with existing Shimano electronics in its fishing and cycling products.

Key Features:

• Powerful, brilliant image-capturing camera – The lens and image sensor technologies in the CM-1000 combine to enable brilliant HD movies and high quality images in all conditions. Its F2.0 bright lens boasts incredible low-light performance while its 16MP back illuminated CMOS image sensor enables stunning 1080p HD video. The camera offers dual, standard angle 135° and super wide 180° modes, while a 90° increment auto image rotation allows users to flip the camera in multiple directions and maintain a horizontal image plane.

• Light, compact form factor – At 86 grams, including the battery and lens cover, and with dimensions of 44x70x30mm, its pocket size, streamlined design is smaller than a standard deck of cards.

• Exceptional waterproof rating – Out of the box and without the need for an external case, CM-1000 is waterproof up to 10 meters. This depth meets the IPX-8 Waterproof Standard – the best rating for electronics experiencing continuous underwater use.

• Advanced connectivity and intelligent integration – The CM-1000 utilizes WiFi connectivity and custom iOS and Android apps for mobile devices to allow live views, video playback, remote adjustments to camera settings and shot framing. Unique to the CM-1000, the device also uses ANT+ and ANT private wireless connections to transmit data from bicycle computers and accessories and the new Shimano D-Fly wireless Di2 transmitter to show performance cycling data in its captured videos.

Versatile, User-Friendly Design

Using the CM-1000 is simple and worry-free, thanks to the unit’s design, waterproof capabilities, and connectivity and integration options with popular consumer electronics. The two-button design allows quick control or key functions while dual LED lights and audible cues identify settings. Its waterproof rating makes the CM-1000 a great option on the deck of a boat, for casual swimming, and enables it to be hosed off with other gear after a day’s adventure. The auto-image rotation function means that it will maintain a horizontal shot despite its physical rotation. Connectivity and integration options with mobile devices and cycle computers simplify setup and playback while the ANT/ANT+ data allows cyclists to monitor videos and use the performance data - including heart rate, gear indication and cadence for example - as a training tool to improve their riding.

Accessories, Supporting Software and Availability

The CM-1000 Sport Camera comes standard with the camera and lens cover, an adhesive mount and vented helmet mount, a USB cable and a start-up manual. The CM-1000 Sport Camera utilizes an iOS 6.0 and Android 4.2 app for use as a remote controller, angle monitor, a tool to change settings and video preview. Software for Windows 7 and Mac OS enables more comprehensive video editing, fish-eye view compensation, the display and integration of video and ANT+/ANT information to videos. Additional accessories for the CM-1000 include the following mounts that all offer tool-free installation and adjustment: CM-MT01 Handlebar mount; CM-MT02 Flexible mount; CMMT03 Chest mount; and the CM-MT04 Cap mount. The CM-1000 will be available in May 2014 for $299.00.

Please make a dropper post, Shimano. You'll sell at least one!

Dud they should make a 650b fishing pole Wink
  • 63 3
I heard they had a 13 speed wide-ratio, clutch derailleur fishing reel to be released at Sea Otter...
  • 14 3
 ↑that was wild
  • 4 1
Well, they have a patent for 14 speed cassette, so 13 speed is not bad. Now manufacturers have to make frames with 170mm rear axle.

Mmmmmmm now tjey are going to be 2 cameras(i want one)

And if you don't make the dropper, at least make the camera GoPro mount compatible so those people with loads of existing mounts can still use the new camera.
(PS, the mount does look nearly the same as GoPro, just depends if the dimensions fit)

Here we go with the reel size debate again!

Sounds like a pov camera made for XC and roadies. Not many DH and FR guys care about performance data being uploaded via ant+. Where's the video upload to see the video quality? Specs don't prove image quality....
  • 119 13
At this point I highly doubt any action sports camera company is going to out sell GoPro.
  • 22 11
Exactly, why compete for a tiny percentage of a limited market?
  • 34 4
 maybe with right price tag
  • 15 7
Yeah so nobody should try ...
  • 86 13
For $299 with those features... Shimano has outdone go-pro. No need for a bulky waterproof case alone wins my vote.

Companies should try - but not fishing reel/bike component manufacturers. Leave the cameras to the camera companies.
  • 39 3
Yeah because what could a company with billions of dollars possibly be able to spend developing a nice camera. You do know that prior to their video camera, Go Pro wasn't anything at all. They weren't a camera company. The guy who founded it sold bead and shell belts out of the back of a VW bus.
  • 13 3
Shimano makes high quality stuff. And they are no stranger to electronics. Besides, you don't think they consult with experts on this stuff?? GoPro wasn't a camera company until they started making cameras. We have to wait for reviews and for this to hit market, but I really doubt they would try if they didn't think they could do it better.

Well do you think GOPRO actually makes their cameras?? No, they have other companies make if for them and put their logo on it. A lot of these "technology" companies don't even make anything, they're a brand. Apple doesn't really make anything either, they have Chinese companies working for them making all the stuff. Companies like Sony and Samsung which actually make their own stuff from scratch are companies I prefer to buy products from. Although this Shimano camera looks way better than anything from GOPRO. I think GOPRO is way overrated, many better mini cameras out there.
  • 16 5
And the Sony is not very good....so there goes that theory.
  • 14 13
For the price of 199$ Sony is god damn great. Not everybody has the cache for a brand new GoPro 3+ black.

And looking at it, low rage Sony is actually better than a low range GoPro.
  • 12 9
GoPro hasn't cornered the market yet. I've owned numerous GoPros and all of them have had technical issues so my loyalty towards the brand is pretty much non-existent. They look like a brick on your head, they're still pretty shite in low light, the 'Protune' mode makes the footage look crap, the WiFi delay still feels like a week even on the 3+.... if a company was to sort these issues and deliver the quality of footage that the gopro can (when it works) then I'd buy one.
  • 5 3
GoPro has lower priced models..... The Sony was a swing and a miss, imo.
  • 6 5
I'm not suggesting Yoshi Shimano is in a shed somewhere hand grinding lenses - it's obvious elements of design and all of production are outsourced. Here's another fundamental issue with Shimano action cameras - unless you ride a bike or fish with Shimano parts, it's not likely you would purchase a Shimano camera. Do you think a guy looking to outfit his motocross bike with a camera will go out of his way to buy a Shimano cam at a bike shop?

My original insinuation was that this is a niche product distributed through limited channels competing against some well funded and established competitors. That's an up-hill battle.
  • 3 2
But at the same time anybody with a bike would be inclined to give one a whirl. They have an in with that segment of the market that a complete newcomer wouldn't have... it's a good point you have, but at the same time Shimano makes so many things it's gives them financial power to really make a good unit here without risking a whole lot.
  • 4 2
go pro is a great product but there marketing machine has comsumers convinced that there are the only pov camera worth buying. If you do five minutes of research you will find other products with the same specs at a cheaper price point. I say more options for the consumer is always a good thing.
  • 6 2
Having just watched the first test video on Vital MTB i can comprehensively say this camera is not going to rival the Go Pro 3+. Not even close. Hell, from what I just saw it wouldn't rival Contour (RIP) or Sony. Better luck with Version 2 Yoshi.
  • 14 2
IMO, the reason nobody can really compete with gopro is the mounting options and security. Every other POV camera i've seen has an abysmal mounting setup that is either really unstable, lacks adjustment or lacks options. The fact there is a stable gopro mount that will work for almost anything you could want to use it for is what sets it apart.
  • 8 5
Rocky-Urban you are oversimplifying those relationships. Apple didn't just call up some company in China and say 'build us an iPhone'. Apple does the conception, R&D, prototyping, testing, and pre-production legwork. Eventually they contract the building of the final parts and/or product to an overseas producer. Apple knows their strength is in the vision and the innovation. Why try and take over, say, the screen manufacturing business when they can contract an industry expert like Samsung to do it for them?

Those producers requires specs, requirements, details of every kind. Where do you think those come from?
  • 2 2
I think it comes down simply to the quality of the footage- and GoPro have stayed on top on that side of things IMO. It's only matter of time till someone comes along and bursts their bubble. Companies like Shimano and Sony weren't just going to sit there and watch Nick Woodman earn another couple of billion dollars.
  • 6 6
GoPro is not better at quality of video. Not even close. They are better at making slick promotional videos. That said, it is 2014, and cameras should have 4K ability.
  • 6 3
@ Axxe- so what POV cam offers better quality than the GoPro? 4K footage is currently a little pointless IMO. I don't own a Cinema and my PC would probably grind to a halt trying to edit it.
  • 4 4
This wins me over based in shape alone. The GoPro is totally the wrong shape for an action cam IMO. And no frustrating plastic case.. lets face it who uses GoPro without the case? May as well make the damn camera waterproof..

But quality is paramount, the Contour cameras were lighter, better looking and with exception of chesty (which I don't like anyway) more practical.. But Image was better on GoPro, with possible exception of the Contour+ which was just way too expensive, so Contour lost.. Shimano have enough money to advertise, have more than enough sponsored riders they can get using the thing, basically, this should do well.

I like my GoPro, but which ever idiot decided it should look like a miniature camera was trippin'! And yes GoPro don't actually make their own cameras!

What is pointless about 4K footage? What else would I watch on my 4K TV set?

Sony has better base video quality, less jitter, better sensitivity.
  • 1 4
I have a cam one infinity. Half the price of a go pro with a screen on the back. I need a case for my camera those action sport cameras take a beating and the lens would be toast after a month of riding
  • 3 5
@Axxe - if you own a Sony 4K TV then you have more money than sense! However, I must half agree that the newest Sony Action Cam is the closest rival to GP quality tho. However- you can't use it for chest mount very easily and there simply isn't the variety of accessories that you can buy for GoPro. If you want to use it on a drone then you're better off with the GP as most small stabilizers are designed for GP3.

LG rather than Sony. And for pretty much everybody, out of the box footage (and who really edits it anyway) will be better on Sony. Chest mounts are lame. GoPro wins on accessories and marketing. And 4K. Well, not yet, need 30fps.
  • 1 4
Chest mounts are no more lame than helmet mounts and a whole lot less lame than bar mounts yet shed loads of people use those. IMO loads of people edit their footage- think of all the edits there are on this site where the footage comes from a GoPro. They might not sit there for days colour grading and compositing footage, but loads of people hack a little vid using free editing software.

4K will be the way eventually, but not yet... currently you have to spend an absolute sh*t load of cash to get anything that shoots at that resolution, and then the same again to edit it and yet again to watch it.
  • 2 9
flag Axxe (Feb 3, 2014 at 10:04) (Below Threshold)
Chest mounts are lame. Not a single good clip came out of a chest mount. 4K TV costs about the same as a good 1080p tv a few years back ($2.5k for 55"), and you can edit it just fine.
  • 3 3
this will targeted at the roadie crowd as it is more aero than a gopro.....or is that more enduro
  • 1 4
You do realize that they do develop and create their own unique products.... every company that is large enough will out-source their production to china or other poor countries, it's all about the profit. Now get out of your cave and do some slight research before making such a unintelligent comment
  • 3 4
GoPro developed a chip that can shoot 4k at 30 fps and 1080p at 120 fps a while ago. Nick Woodman said in a speech that if you love your Hero 3 or Hero 3+, you haven't seen anything yet. If 4k at 30 fps is what you want, the GoPro Hero 4 will most likely have it. I say start saving your pennies now and get the Hero 4 when it comes out in a few months.
  • 4 3
I visited axxe's profile to check out all his cool videos.... All he has posted is a picture of a bike that is half way coverd by shadows

  • 1 2
Why in the world would I post videos here? Especially with my family? I enjoy them myself, as memories, not into lame interwebs exhibitionism. I have posted a bike, because somebody asked. Probably should not, and would not.
  • 1 3
your right Axxe you shouldn't have Wink Where do you keep all the 4k bike vids at? You're amongst friends dude!
  • 1 3
My videos are on my home server. Where it should be. No 4k yet though. 15fps is lame. Waiting for a better one.
  • 1 3
 Are they mtb videos??
  • 2 3
Some of them are, but it is none of your business - and this dialog is a sufficient evidence as to why.

And, by the way: www.pcworld.com/article/2085980/prices-of-4k-monitors-fall-to-under-800.html It is cheap, and getting cheaper, and even 2.5k looks very nice.

 Helps reduce a monopoly.
  • 1 1
Competition is always good, and if Shimano brings some new improvements, Gopro will also improve eventually. The best potential I see with this is to use it for broadcasting coverage of the enduro world series races, since you could stream it live on the net and switch coverage between different riders out on the trails while you have a commentator talking about what's happening.
  • 2 0
Shimano aren't the only one trying to make inroads in to the action-cam market. Anybody had hands on with the JVC Adixxion? adixxion.jvc.com

Looks a bit chunky and no 4K (so what), but it is apparently gyro stabilized, shoots 1080@60fps and 720@120fps, and simultaneous photo and video capture.
  • 2 0
I love my Sony. Steadyshot, good optics, great picture, and light. Not sure what you don't like about it. I had a gp2 and this is way bettet,.
  • 1 1
Less mounting options, worse marketing (sorry shimano but for such a big company marketing wise you suck) and the only thing that is better here is the price? So unless the Full hd image quality in low light conditions is exponentially better this thing won't sell.
  • 1 1
I dont see a good way of chest mounting it. The battery life is short and you dont have the option of changing batteries mid ride.
  • 36 7
I would be much more impressed with a simple 11-38 9 speed or 11-40 10 speed cassette from Shimano, and I'm sure most riders these days would appreciate it a lot more than this product. C'mon Shimano, we are waiting...
  • 23 3
And you will continue to wait until it's ready. Shimano stays in the lab until the product reaches perfection.
  • 4 3
I was shouting this for ages, now I have realised what I really want is for them to use the 11speed freehub design for a 10-36 (9-36 if possible) 10 speed cassette. All you need to change is your freehub body and cassette, same range as 11-40 (or 11-44 if 9tooth is possible), but short cage derailleurs will work and front and rear rings get smaller rather than bigger (clearance and weight). Ideal setup: 28 front (no bash due to huge clearance), 9-36 rear: equivalent to 34 front 11-44 rear, but between 100-200g lighter with better clearance.
  • 3 1
Couldn't you build that with a capreo hub now? Last time I looked, the Canfield hubs are on sale, even... canfieldbrothers.com/store/index.php/microdrive/10-speed-9t-microdrive-cassette-package.html
  • 3 3
9t is very good on a picture but in real ride chain can slide because the diameter is very small
  • 1 2
ive ridden plenty of 9t drivers, and even a couple of 8t ones. i wouldnt say the diameter has to do with chain retention (maybe ever so slightly, but if your chain tension is correct, you wont have an issue), although smaller cogs are harder on chains..
  • 1 2
9t single speed is going to be more secure than a geared system, due to increased chain wrap in a single speed, and constant chain tension. That said, people seem to be pretty happy with those capreo hubs, so something must be working right.
  • 1 2
if you have a clutch der, you will have more than enough chain tension. my type 2 x9 is unbelievably stiff.
  • 1 2
I have to wonder if you won't have problems getting the top cage pulley close enough to the 9t. I pulled the B screw completely off mine which is running a 11t, and it could still run closer. It's gonna be pretty far from a 9t, enough to reduce the amount of chain engaging the pulley. Shimano may be a different story, though.
  • 1 0
 @Mugen

Bigger front rings are stiffer and more efficient. But I don't really care 'bout that stuff so I like what you are thinking.
  • 21 4
Looks great. But only one thing that I don't like:
Battery type Li-ion battery 3.7v 950mAh (Non-removable)

:/ I hate non removable stuff.
  • 3 6
It also shows they're behind the times as the new Go Pro 3+ has a better battery than this. They say the 3+ has a longer battery life but that's because the battery has a larger capacity rather than the camera being any better!
  • 3 6
But if you look at it from a more practical angle... how many guys record more than 2hrs of footage on a action camera? And what is the average time span you as a regular user use it?

And on top of that. How many people owning 2 or more spare batteries do you know? I know at least 20 people that have go pros and none of them have a spare battery.
  • 3 2
I have 2 spare batteries! - I think it depends if you use the WiFi much as it drains batteries like there's no tomorrow. I use mine on a drone and a cable cam so the WiFi is kind of essential. I agree tho, if I didn't use the WiFi I doubt a spare would be necessary.

  • 2 0
Battery is sealed inside so no replacement when battery dies. Also I watched a Shimano vid shot with this camera. Looks like early Go Pro footage before they put in a decent color engine. Shimano, Maybe your next camera will be better. If I cant change the battery I will never buy this camera.
  • 1 0
135 posts and still no post about what sets this Camera apart, that is its ANT+ functions? In that regard this Camera makes sense as a training tool. Add a suspension telemetry function and this would give amature racers a very usefull pre race analysis tool for cheap. With di2 going wireless this Camera as a bonus part of that system is a bonus too easynot to make. If most cameras are sold only for the basic camera functions, so be it. Think of this as a bikecomputer with a camera.
  • 1 0
Why anyone would make one without a screen is beyond belief. That run you've just nailed & then you get home & realise your camera is looking at the trees. Doh! Also, with that shape you can't mount it on a chest cam. They need to be more versatile than this. The GoPro is the best but the Muvi HD that I use is not far behind & for a lot less wonga! 1080HD is great until you get into the trees & it can't cope with the fast light changes so 720 ends up being the best option anyway. Jus' sayin'
  • 3 2
Probably won't outsell GoPro, but maybe, just maybe the Shimano camera will continue working for longer than 36 seconds, and if it breaks, the customer support won't be utter and total arse...

People want to buy cameras from companies that make cameras. A consumer wants to buy from a company with a good reputation in that field. This wont sell. Gopros design is well proven and its a company that specializes in pov cameras. This dosnt stand a chance simply becuase shimano wont have the right athletes to market it.
  • 1 0
The main problem with POV camera's i'm finding is that they make the trail look lame! Give me a camera that represents what is actually going on and i'll buy it!

I wonder if this will work with the electronic shifting soon and automatically shift to the best suited gearing combination as it sees an upcoming change in elevation.......

Do you guys really thing those gopro promo videos are not actual gopro footage? I can't vouch for ever single shot, but I can actually say for sure that the vast majority of it is straight from a gopro. They really are that good, especially with someone who's good at editing the footage.

And while I hate electronic music and agree that the music in gopro videos can be annoying, that Shimano music was truly bad. It sounded like a 13 year old who just learned to play chords plugged his guitar into garage band.

edit: this was supposed to be a reply to my comment earlier, oops.

I guess it's an easy product to design and produce, especially for a company based in a tech giant like Japan. Why not... even if sales are limited, they'll still make some money I'm sure.

Competition is a good thing for all users/consumers. You or I may not buy this camera, but it'll force GoPro to up their game if they want to keep relevant in the market.

Wonder if you can plug it in your Di2 system so when the battery gets low all your shimano electronic stuff can fail all at the same time?
  • 1 1
shimano di2 doesn't just stop working, it first drops you into the little ring after giving you pretty fair warning the battery is going and then you get 100 shifts from the rear derailleur... not so bad
  • 1 1
If di2 wasn't reliable, it wouldn't be on so many tdf bikes. Rarely fails

Over 200 issues with them at the tour de France last year. Fails a lot.

Looks perfect apart from non removable battery.

non removable battery make sense on 10m depth waterproof enclosure. Nothing worse than luser to fuck up with it.
