First Look at YTs new Carbon DH Prototype

YT Tuesday
YT Industry's Tues, pronounced "two-ez," is a carbon framed, pro-level DH racer redesigned around 27.5-inch wheels that in its top-level offering, will give aspiring racers, pro-level components and performance at an attainable price.

YT founder and CEO Markus Flossmann with his Tues DH racer.
The pre-production bike in his hands weighs only 15.2 kilograms
(that's 33.5 pounds in the USA).

Markus Flossmann, the owner, CEO and founder of YT Industries dropped in to show us his latest beauty: a 27.5-inch wheel version of YT's Tues DH racer. Markus says that its name conjunction of two German words that translate to, "do it" in English. The Tues proto was outfitted with BOS suspension - and not just any BOS fork and shock. The air-sprung Void DH shock was a new version that had its adjustment dials hidden from the camera by an inner tube and zip ties. All we could squeeze from Markus was that it had a much greater range of adjustment. The air-sprung Idylle Air fork was upgraded with the French suspension maker's FCV valve internals. The top Tues Pro model with reportedly be equipped with the new BOS fork and shock. YT plans to release the new bike at a number of price points, similar to its 2014 predecessor. While final pricing is not set yet, Markus says that the new 27.5-inch-wheel Tues will be slightly more expensive than this year's models, but still within reason. He hinted that the top-drawer Tues Pro should come in around 4000 Euros. Sizes will be available in small, medium and large.

YT Tuesday up close
YT uses a conventional four-bar rear suspension for the Tues, with a Horst-Link dropout pivot. Cables and housings are routed cleanly outside the frame for serviceability, and three sizes will be offered.

The front section and upper suspension members are carbon, while the Tues' swingarm is welded aluminum. Reportedly, the new Tues chassis, while looking similar to this season's model, is a different mold, and the linkage is slightly different as well. The changes, says Markus, were necessary to properly blend the larger wheels into the design and to take advantage of the bottom bracket drop that the 27.5-inch wheel's axle placement affords. The frames are made in Taiwan at a factory that YT has been working with for a considerable time, and to keep things running smoothly, YT has a permanent headquarters there.

YT Tuesday cassette
YT plans to sell the pro level Tues with SRAM's seven-speed DH group. The only internal cable routing is through the right seat stay to the rear mech.

Before you lay down your credit card for a YT Tues, Markus says that it will be a while before we see them for sale, as final testing and European EN certification is taking place at this time. Reportedly, YT uses independent laboratories for certification and also does its own testing and real-world evaluations using Pro and amateur riders to assess durability and performance characteristics. Markus expects the new Tues DH bikes to ship near the end of 2014.

YT Tuesday bos suspension
Excuse me sir, could you remove that rubber cover from the BOS Void shock? Marks says there are "additional" adjustments under there.

Those who do not know the story will appreciate that YT stands for "Young Talent." The origin of the company, which ships and sells its bicycles directly to customers through the internet, was a chance meeting between Markus and a number of dirt jumpers who were riding at some local jumps. Markus said that their bikes were terrible department store things that were not safe to be jumping with, but when he told the youthful riders this, the reply was a challenge: "These are all we can afford," came the answer. "If you can make us a better bike for the same money, then we will buy them."

YT Tuesday bb
The bottom bracket is a press fit type, which Markus says is ultimately the better way to put a BB into a carbon frame.

Markus designed and spec'ed a dirt jumper, complete with a Marzocchi DJ fork, for only 400 Euros and had 150 of them made - which was all of his spare money at the time. They sold out in nine days, after which, Markus quit his job and founded YT. Today YT sells in almost every European country and much of the world. The brand is well respected in the UK, and there are plans in the works to enter North America very soon.YT remains dedicated to selling good performing bicycles at very reasonable prices in order to bring young or new riders into the sport. Check the YT Industries website for a good look at their range and while you are there, read up on their service and warranty agreements. Markus has done well.

YT Tuesday shock
The YT Tues suspension reportedly loads the shock directly in line with the seat-stay member, rather than transferring the loads through a rocker link to the shock from a different angle. This, says Markus, puts less stress in the frame and allows it to be made lighter weight.

Hey PB. Your mobile content is brutal to read. How about some improvements?

Sorry mates, when we do layouts with inset photos or charts, mobiles jumble it all up. The only way to make it go away is to stack the photos and text - to alternate text without embellishment, under single images. Unfortunately, that kind of layout sucks for everyone else. BUT! I just posted a large bike check piece with a stacked layout, so mobile phone viewers can read it without weeping. Coming up soon. RC

mtber9491988, that's my point exactly. in most cases, you get what you pay for. in the PB case, you get way more. but the complainers keep on comin' i cant believe i got sucked in to this one

the good part about YT industries bikes is, you don`t have do throw all of your money on the screen! Wink that`s why i have own 3 YT industries bikes, instead of 1 insanely expensive carbon session. Guess that full build carbon tues will cost like 3999€?

Pinkbike! Is there any chance you could do a review on their Capra? I know they don't sell direct to North America which makes it hard to find one, but I would love to see how it compares with the current enduro race machines coming in at WAY higher price points. Thanks!

I have looked at those reviews but I would love to see a more in depth review by Pinkbike to see how this bike compares to others that THEY have reviewed..

I bought a Capra based on the strength of the reviews in MBR, Dirt and MBUK but would love to see it reviewed by Pinkbike. The bike arrives in November and I cannot wait to ride it. It's great to see a small company turning the tables on the big boys by giving the consumers what they want at a price they can afford!

  • 7 3
WHEN THE F%&K ARE YOU GOING TO START MAKING PROPER SIZED BIKES! FFS!

Money in my bank for a YT Capra, but no... you only make up to a Large size, which in some other manufacturer sizing comes closer to a medium at best! No wonder YT sponser Lacondeguy, he's like 5 foot flat right? Damn Germans.
  • 3 1
The whole industry is stuck producing bikes that are too small. I'm 5'10" on a Large Tues, don't have a clue how anyone 6'+ manages?

Spec have recently turned around with the sizing on the new Demo, the Kona process & GT's recent offerings seem to be heading in the right direction too.
  • 3 0
So just to sound like a dick, why cover this that a small group will purchase but nothing on the Capra which really seems to break all the rules? I don't think YT would mind me saying that bike is what will pay the bills this next year!
  • 6 1
If i didnt already have a 2014 Tues comp, i'd be all over this like a tramp on chips!!!
  • 2 1
How does the YT Tues ride?
  • 8 2
Bitching about wheel size is so 2013...
  • 3 1
YT have proven that you can make brilliant riding high quality carbon frames without charging people a fortune. For example a high specced Capra is about the same price as a carbon Yeti SB66 frame alone.I hope they keep up the good work.
  • 1 0
After 10 years being a Specialized fan, i'm officially YT Industries fan. Just bought the the alloy version 2 years ago, and still fresh from the oven Capra CF Pro, i'm REALLY happy and won't regret with my decision. Even i have plan to sell my 2012 Demo.
  • 3 2
in the photo with the close up of the 7spd block, the carbon around where it looks like a metal dropout is bonded in looks a bit, er, wrong. i know its a proto and all but they`ve obviously got the molds sorted and they`ve even done graphics. you`d think theyd have sorted the frame finishing before that....
  • 7 6
The angles on that linkage look crazy, talk about inbuilt mechanical pedal platform, just looking at it looks like, under compression the shock will be hyper-extended and torn apart instead of compressed. Obviously the linkage works but the stress on the rocker bearings and stays must be horrific.

 It works really well!

  • 7 1
"The brand is well respected in the UK, and there are plans in the works to enter North America very soon."
  • 10 4
We've been hearing that since last year. I cant imagine them having trouble finding a distributor with their pricepoint. And you can buy them direct in Europe. What's the hold up?
  • 1 1
The problem will be finding a distributor that will all them to keep their pricepoint down. Does customs make it too difficult to ship directly here? I shipped a bike to spain once. It didn't seem like a big deal.
  • 2 7
flag mate1998 (Aug 15, 2014 at 0:14) (Below Threshold)
 FSR patent is the problem.
  • 3 1
The patent is over.... hence the problem is not one anymore.
  • 2 1
 then idk
  • 2 1
It's a lot easier to ship from the US then it is to ship into the US. I work for a paintball company and customs and duties take a huge amount on it making its way onto American soil.

Could be a large factor?
  • 3 1
This will take time because YT will have to set up not just a shipping department but a customer service and warranty and repair center since they are purposefully avoiding including bike shops in order to bring the cost down. Setting up their entire self-sufficient operation in the US will not be an easy nor quick endeavor.
  • 1 1

F*** me.. just bring on the 29ers and kill me...

You should at least keep the 26" option as Trek did, because some riders actually like to have fun on a bike and they do not have the "faster than you attitude". This is pure marketing - Aaron Gwin rides 27.5 so everyone will buy it because they are retards. Show us some tests .. some comparison Ratboy still won on a 26"
  • 6 2
People need to get over wheel size. The fact is 26 is dead. Even in 4x Quentin Derbier was testing 650b recently. Move on it such a boring boring debate now. If 650b wasnt faster then companies like this would make dh bikes with them.
  • 3 0
Matt, you missed part the point. He said fun (albeit initially), this is what people keep forgetting. I don't race, not even strava! I couldn't give a monkeys what's faster, what matters to me is being able to do really bad whips and skids but feel I'm some kind of don mega, all whilst on a boring old trail ride. 26 wins for that.
  • 1 0
I'd love for YT to make a Wicked 29, but I'd rather not kill anyone when there's riding to do.
  • 2 0
I do jumps and skids on my 29er, I've jumped the same size jumps on that as I have on my 4x bike. I've even raced it at 4x and put it on the podium. Just because it has bigger wheels didn't mean it's not fun. Bit of a silly comment really. I'm sure everyone else on bigger wheels has a lot of fun to

I wonder how lacondeguy feels about the 27.5
  • 2 2
he will probably stick with the 2014 26" model cause how can he expect to have fun if his wheels are too big and floppy. I wish companies would make bike in both 26" and 650b wheel sizes so those who care about speed and those who care about fun are both satisfied
  • 4 1
In a blind test do you really think you could tell the difference? I have never ridden anything larger than 26 but everyone bitching about we don't care if is a micro second faster to me is ass backwards, the elite Pros will maybe tell a difference but all us Internet experts will maybe have a bit more capable bike that feels the exact same! If you can honestly feel a difference from 26 to tween you should be a paid racer cause anyone else is full of shit!
  • 1 0
Stickman I sense much anger in you! It does seem freeriders are being forgotten thanks to geometry being fashionable, as ridiculous as that concept is, they'll all have to switch to session parks or spesh status' if they want steeper geometry as it seems these are the only two brands who now support something other than enduro and downhill
  • 1 0
 *steeper geo and 26" spinners
  • 1 0
Geometry I agree 100% with as most downhill bikes look way to choppered out to even ride to me but I have to disagree on wheel size, possibly cause I have never tried it or maybe I am a victim of hype but I honestly don't think most riders could tell a difference in a blind comparison.
  • 2 0
If I can feel a HUGE difference between 20", 24", 26", and 29" then why would most riders not feel a difference between 26 and 27.5? I know several people who've started riding 27.5 because they did feel a difference when they tried one out. It can't be all placebo, right?
  • 2 0
I've got 26, 650b and 29 and I can feel the difference and I'm no pro. My lad has 26 and 650b and he can feel the difference to and he is 12. Both full of sh*t are we?
  • 1 0
Nico Vink talked about wheelsize with Andreu Lacondeguy during the Chatel Bikefestival. Vink isn't a fan of 650b he thinks wheelsize is dependant on the height of the person. They kept joking about it all week with Lacondeguy saying maybe he should go back to 24in. But overall I got the impression Andreu wasn't too fussed, a bike is a bike he said. I think he'd rip on this new bike just as easily as he would on the old one.
  • 1 0
PS: I can feel the difference between 20.5in (24), 22in (26) and 23in (650b) wheels and I'm not a pro. Everyone talks about how bigger wheels are faster but the main advantage I see for the non racer is how much better bigger wheels are in the rough stuff. The don't get swallowed up in holes and pass over roots more easily. It makes riding through technical terrain that much easily. I don't notice the difference in smooth berms or flow trails!
  • 2 1
If you're having problems riding roots or technical terrain, maybe it's not a new bike that you need but practice perhaps?
  • 1 0
PLC07 never said I was having problems, just that I have never tried the different wheel size. and I can see a difference on 24-26-29 as they are fairly decent jumps but the 27.5 I don't think will feel all that much different than a large volume 26". I also have heard from all I have talked to as trail bikes go that they love the new size, not a huge difference but just that little something extra. that being said, I am pretty sure if I had no idea what size I was riding, I would love whatever I am on, and the bike itself is going to make the difference in feel, not the small change in wheel size.
  • 2 0
I think you'd notice the difference if you rode it for sure but is it necessary? Is it hell. Just another way for the bike industry to inflate prices on the same old tired concept. Two wheel a chain and some cogs. Don't mention suspension because that's another red herring but that's all that's going on here. For a start isn't the point to use skill and ability to ride fast over rough ground not larger wheels? Maybe I'm missing something but most bike parks where a lot of these bikes will be plying their trade are smooth as a babies arse so where does it all fit.
  • 2 0
Sure not necessary . But is 1x11, dropper seat posts, tubeless, amazing suspension. Carbon. Etc? It all make our riding a better experience.
  • 3 0
I've said it often before, I tried 650b and to be honest, I did notice a tiny difference about "rolling over stuff better" but then the handling is a little bit slower. Didn't notice the added momentum or the slower acceleration that you get with bigger wheels though and I wasn't on trails that stretched the grip to the limit so I can't comment on that. I can see the point of 29ers and its all good if thats your thing but 650b, I really feel it is just an excuse mess up the standards and sell us something "new".

  • 1 0
Depends on how much you value/need face-to-face customer service. With other brands like Specialized part of what you are paying for is that shop you can actually take your bike to (which normally give you discounts on parts/labor when you buy the bike from them). Sure you can take a YT to a bike shop, but be prepared to pay more than a guy who bought his bike from the shop.

If that doesn't matter to you and/or you can work on your own bike or don't mind dealing with customer service over the phone, then go for it.
  • 1 0
@ka-brap: Well i could buy two Tues and still have a few k$ for sapre parts and stuff, so i guess i am ok with that....

What happened to support your LBS?
  • 1 0
I have no problem supporting my local bike shop but i despise the distributors mark up. Especially when most of them are rubish to deal with
  • 2 0
I think the LBS is getting caught in the crossfire. The big brands have pushed and pushed prices up and up, they've demanded floor space at the expense of smaller more specialist brands, they've skimped on the parts spec (I keep seeing OE Sektors and Deore drivetrains on $4200bikes) they've moved manufacture to the far east (remember when nearly all Treks came out of Wisconsin eight years ago?), they've cut and cut their warranties and in doing so they've blown a giant, gaping hole in the market. In my LBS there are some great bikes under £1000, a couple of hard tails in the £1500range and then basically nothing until you hit £4000 (that's $6600 USD). Pretty much the entirety of YT's range fits between £1500 and £3500 once you work the exchange rates out, the area that none of my local shops seem able to touch. I spend quite a lot of money in my LBS on gear, parts and mechanic time, but I haven't actually bought a bike from one in nearly a decade now because of this, the most I ever spent on one bike in one go was £3000-ish, so there's literally nothing in my LBS for me to buy to begin with.
  • 1 0
I've bought a couple of bikes from local shops since i started riding again. My summum was a grand off retail in the price and my tracer frame was in the sale too. I'd said i'd most probably go for a gambler next but when you compare specs to the yt it doesnt even come close. We all work hard for our money, you have to spend it wisely. If that means ordering tyres from germany, wheels from ireland some stuff second hand, well thats just how it has to be

YT is going to make it in at least three, probably four price levels. Check the 2014, 26-inch wheel prices of the Tues on their web site to get a sense of how the new bike line will break down. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Yup, they usually do a 'vanilla' version, a comp and a pro. All of which are amazing value if you look at the parts you are getting for your money. There is also a one day per year Special edition, which is always stunning and amazingly well equipped.
