Nico Vouilloz Injured in Training Accident

After avoiding injury for most of his career, luck has not been on Nico Vouilloz’s side recently. Following a break of several months (scaphoid fracture and operation for crossed ligaments on his left knee) at the end of the 2013 season, the Lapierre rider had recently restarted training. Unfortunately, a recent fall has put an end to his training. This time it was the turn of his right knee to suffer.

Nico Vouilloz

bigquotesI hurt myself a fortnight ago and was operated on last week. It was during one of my first MTB rides in five months. I was on an XC bike and I lost balance in a slow technical section, catching my shorts on my saddle. I fell on the downslope on the opposite side to that which had been operated, my leg tensed, and craaaack! - Nico Vouilloz

The verdict, says Nico: "internal lateral ligament partially torn, meniscus damaged. As I already had no crossed ligament, all medical experts advised me to have this added on, as I wouldn’t get very far with both ligaments missing! I therefore decided to go for an operation with a synthetic ligament, that should have a fast recovery, we’ll see."

Nico will therefore not be present at the first round of the Enduro World Series in Chile, but if his recovery time is fast, will be at the 2nd round in Scotland.

Once again, the racer and Lapierre R&D team member had this competition as his priority. No longer able to aim for the overall win of the EWS, his intent is to be back on top form for the end of the season and to participate, as always, in the tests and development of Lapierre bikes.

Whilst waiting for better days, it’s rest and recuperation for Nico. You can support Nico on his facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/nicovouilloz

Good luck Nico !

Xc is so bad ass dangerous! I'm switching to DH for safety reasons.
  • 35 4
You speak the truth, I know more people who have been wrecked bad in the last year racing enduro than DH.

Enduro: Racing fatigued on tracks you havent trained on much, but just as fast as a dh bike and on a lil bike with half the amount of safety equipment on your body.
DH: Racing just as fast enduro, mind you guys are pulling a couple bigger lines but on tracks that are well practiced, on a dh bike, and with more safety equipment on. For safety reasons, I am sticking to dh!

XC is just as dangerous because if you end up in a low-speed tech situation, you can tip off into a position you weren't expecting or prepared to go. When you're tearing down a trail and you're looking towards the path of least resistance, you can predict where you're going to end up so if you mess up, you can make decisions to minimize the severity of impact... for most situations anyways.

If you mess up on tech sections, since you don't have any forward momentum, you can be bounced and then tip over into not only an undesirable location but one with hazards you never thought to look at thus not knowing what you're crashing into. Hell, the only time my shin has had a hole drilled into it aside from pedals, was falling on a switch back going uphill with a tech. and dry/slippery rock section. It's not hard if you get the right line but that ride I didn't and simply tipped over without getting the foot outta the cleat in time. Shin landed on top of a rock.

Stupid dum dum whimpy human legs.

Speaking of dangerous cycling .... roadies are eh ... damn far from safe
  • 8 10
Clips are bad, go flat pedals go !!!
  • 8 0
True that @kingpin2607. Drivers don't respect roadies at all. I do downhill, road biking and run. It's pretty scary how close massive trucks and fast cars pass by when I'm out road biking or running. Luckily nothing's happend to me yet, but I've had a bunch of friends run over! None killed yet thankfully.

scott-townes speaks the truth. The worst falls I've ever had have been slow speed, techy climbing sections where the shit hits the fan.

Last time I checked falls were worse when they happened at speed... I also never considered uphills so dangerous... off course apart from that 3 out of 2033481 times where I was riding up by the edge of a cliff and this one time by the bear pit. No?

no hard feelings, it just made me giggle a bit Smile

XC can be dangerous if, like me, you don't gain a lot of ground on the climbs, but do on the descents, and try to overtake there. For a certain period all of my falls were happening when doing crazy off-course lines to try to overtake someone on a cross country race.
  • 2 0
WAKI- try some more technical as opposed to exposed trails ( you know trails that have a high risk of falling on) and you'll learn quick. I grew up riding DH, XC, AM, etc. and XC has definitely had the highest degree of falls that absolutely sucked. Not the riskiest, but god dammer they were some of the most painful.
  • 2 0
Cross Country is actually really fast. People that say that it sucks are fat 'n' lazy. You're constantly pushing yourself on the climbing and descents, check out any relevant Cross Country race video and you'll notice how fast these guys ride with 100-120mm bikes. I'm guessing Nico was clipped, and when you fall down clipped it's pretty dangerous, specially if you're climbing or descending a technical area with close to no protection at all other than a helmet. And WAKI, I'm no rocket scientist, but most times when you crash at speed you can atleast slide after the fall making you lose the speed and you might be lucky no to hit any big fixed object on your way. When you crash riding slow, you don't slide, you're hitting the ground like hitting a fixed object rather than sliding on top of it.

All my big injuries are from riding on flats. Dunno if its from riding more recklessly or not committing fully like you have to clipped in. This and Cedrics show that speed is not always the worst factor.
  • 3 0
^ Cedric's was a freak accident so that really has no place in any conversation unless it's about the most badass mother f*cker out there.
  • 20 2
Hey Nico. You're fast as fuck....but you can outrun the aging process. Being the same age as you, this is something I know well. Heal up quick champ.

 Starting to fall apart! :O

 Something like that.

And wait untilyou hit 53!!!! ha ha

Baggy shorts caught on saddle? I'm staying with xc race shorts! Let the comments begin
  • 2 0
Oh, good. I'm not the only one who catches shorts on saddle...
  • 1 0
Always catch mine on my shifters.
  • 7 1
Baggy shorts forever catch on the saddle, I can do without those 'Whoaaa' moments due to wrong clothing. And, why are pedals that use a clip system called clipless?, Platform pedals have no clips so they are... what? Clip less pedals have clips? Jeez.........
  • 4 1
 I've never understood that either
  • 8 5
Way to show your ignorance. Clips, ie toe straps, are what existed before clip-less pedals that use cleats under the shoe, hence clippess pedals.
  • 9 2
blackthorne i agree that you are right but dont be a douch about it. the name is somewhat misleading to those that have not been informed.
  • 5 0
Ignorant? Because a person would think clipless means no clips? So, your comment is meaningless, right?
  • 5 0
Thanks blackthorne, now I'm ignorance-less. You saved the day
  • 3 0
Just ignorant of mountain biking in the nineties. You think turning your foot 15 degrees is hard try pulling back 3-4 inches and then out and that only worked if they weren't tight.
  • 9 0
Shit.... XC is dodge man!! Saddle up high like that! See what happens!
  • 5 0
I started racing DH around the time Nico was racing in the birth time of DH, the 90s. I remember seeing him in a World Cup race on Oahu Hawaii. During his tenure at the top, he was killing everybody on the World Cup scene by 15secs on some runs. Then switches to Peugot for rally racing, drifting dirt at 100+MPH. All the while escaping any major injuries. Now to be taken down on an XC run? Huge bummer.
  • 4 1
Whilst I completely agree with your point, my DH-geek-alarm is going off. Nico never won a World Cup by 15 seconds. The largest ever winning margin was 14.something seconds by Kovarik at Fort William. Sorry for being such a pedant!

They make you wear baggy shorts in DH but it is just too dangerous for XC. Don't be such a cowboy, put some spandex on for safety. Catchy XC phrase there: Spandex for Safety! Might need to put that on a cycling shirt that is three sizes too small for me....
  • 1 0
Gotta agree with that. It's a case of fashion against function.
  • 6 0
 Heal up buddy!
  • 5 0
Bon courage Nico, soigne toi bien et reviens vite!
  • 5 0
 Crossed ligaments huh?

Like an alien might HAVE??!!!!!
  • 3 1
Well that really sucks. Man you have kicked ass so many times in the past I have lost count. You and Caroline. Take your time to heal properly, get em later #$%%^@$$ baggy shorts!!!!!
  • 2 0
I hope he is not having a LARs reconstruction...my wife had one and it was a total disaster. Anybody thinking of having a LARs I seriously urge you to do the research on LARs failures...Avoid like the Plague
  • 3 0
Most dont run a dropper on their "xc" bikes...so even if ur wearing tights, that seat can play havoc!
  • 4 0
 Oh no...
  • 2 0
Sad news Nico, we wish you a speedy recovery and we know you will be back healthy, fit and stronger than ever!
  • 2 0
Good luck in your recovery Nico!
  • 2 0
Like with an injured Weir, Nico is still way faster than me. Heal up man.
  • 2 0
This is the first time I've heard of crossed ligaments. Off to Google...
  • 2 0
Apparently they're the French translation for ACL/PCL. I thought he had some weird knee ligaments.
  • 3 0
its actually called crutiate ligaments in english i think. stupid and complicated injury. i had those torn twice playing team-handball (rough sport, quite big in europe almost not known in the US).
takes 6 months to be able to play ball games like football again..bicycle riding should be possible earlier if you dont consider crashing ;-)
i myself had body own ligaments used for replacement. 8 years ago synthetic ones weren't a good choice dont know where they are now with that.
so Nico get well soon, be patient. i know this injury sucks camel d1ck!!
  • 2 0
Yeah Fufi7 is right. Each knee should have an ACL – anterior cruciate ligament, a PCL – posterior cruciate ligament, an MCL – medial collateral ligament, and an LCL – lateral collateral ligament. Human knee is a funky thing!
  • 1 0
Get well soon man! You are the greatest DH rider of all times! Im big fan of your riding style.
  • 1 0
how long is a fort night? he mentioned hurting him self "a fortnight ago" not up on my robinhood lately

Heal up quick Nico! All of us are cheering for you. Can't wait to see you back in action!

Broke my leg one year in the same freakish manner.
  • 2 0
 Damn!
  • 1 0
Dealing with a gutted knee right now myself. Best of luck Nico.
  • 1 0
My meniscus repair just failed.had to get it taken out two weeks ago.Doin better now.Hows yours coming along Butch?
  • 1 0
No cartlidge on the outside, so they did microfracture on that side (look it up), bone spurs, patellar wearing on my surgically repaired ACL, arthritis, floating cyst. Crutches until I get a brace to wear all the time to keep my alignment.
  • 1 0
Jesus, sounds like i got off easy. Thanks for making me feel better!
  • 1 0
Anything for you baby. You should see my brace. 6 straps with a # on each so I strap them up in the right sequence and a dial on the inside pivot to move my knee out just right.

Gonna have to buy skinny jeans and Chuck Norris jeans so I can fit it over them instead of stuffing it inside regular denim.
  • 1 0
I'm kinda jealous of that thing. It sounds pretty tech-sexy
  • 1 0
Real shame. Would have been a top three at least in the overall I think.
  • 1 0
healing vibes Nico, good luck Smile
