2015 Santa Cruz V10C-6 Rat Boy party

Santa Cruz threw a party at its headquarters to celebrate Josh Bryceland's World Cup Series Overall victory and Silver Medal at the World Championships. Rat Boy was on crutches and in good spirits, looking to heal up quickly. About two hundred revelers showed up for the invitation-only bash, including a cadre of yet-to-be-announced additions to the Syndicate Team. Festivities included hydraulic shark rides, 80's karaoke and enough alcohol to power the generators at the UCSC dormitories for a week. The surprise of the party was the announcement that the 27.5-inch wheel V10.6 was in production for model year 2015, and that the first shipment was already arriving at select dealers worldwide. Two models will be available: a SRAM X01 version that will retail for $8799 and a more affordable Shimano Zee based V10 with an MSRP of $5699.

2015 Santa Cruz V10C-6
The 2015 V10 may look similar to its predecessor, but it is a ground-up revision, beginning with 27.5-inch wheels.

Santa Cruz founder and supreme ruler Rob Roskopp.

Features

• Full carbon frame and swingarm
• 216mm (8.5") VPP suspension
• 27.5" wheels
• Adjustable geometry with High and Low settings
• Double sealed pivots for long bearing life
• Dual grease ports on lower link for easy maintenance
• Integrated fork bumpers with cable guide
• Molded clip-on chainstay and upright protector
• Angular contact bearings maximize stiffness
• Collet axle pivots lock in place without pinch bolts
• 157mm rear axle spacing
• Threaded BB for creak-free riding and easy installation
• ISCG-05 tabs for chainguide compatibility
• Sizes: S, M, L, XL
• MSRP: Two builds - $5699 to $8799

Basically, the new bike is an improved version of the machine that the team campaigned on this season - which reportedly, is a complete redesign. That said, the 2015 V10 follows the same lines as the 26-inch design, but with a shorter shock (8.75" compared to 9.5") and slightly reduced rear-wheel travel to compensate for the larger, 27.5-inch wheels. The front section is strengthened and features larger-diameter tubes, with a longer front-center to produce a roomier cockpit. The swingarm has been redesigned with stiffer, larger chainstays. The chainstay length is the same as the 26-inch, with the exception of the new XL size, which uses the exact same swingarm, but with longer VPP linkage arms in order to add another ten millimeters. Adjustable geometry can alter the steering angle by a half degree (64 or 63.5 degrees) and the bottom bracket height by one fourth inch (7mm). The VPP rear suspension has also been reconfigured to produce a less progressive leverage rate.

2015 Santa Cruz V10C-6
Santa Cruz returns to SRAM for its elite drivetrains and brakes for 2015. Race Face cranks and cockpit items are a new twist as well.

V10 timeline
Twelve years of V10 racing development in one place. The bottom brackets got progressively lower, the head angles, slacker and the bikes, much lighter.

To mark the debut of the latest V10, Santa Cruz assembled a timeline of its 12-year history as the sport's most successful gravity racing bike, from its earliest beginnings as the Super 8, ridden to victory at the 1999 European championships, to the carbon V10-6 that Rat Boy rode to the WC overall in 2014. Syndicate mechanic Doug Hatfield, the man who personally assembled and maintained nearly every one of the machines on display, walked me through them one by one. It was an emotional moment. What struck me most was that, with the exception of Steve Peat's number four plate at the Canberra World Cup (he won that race), every race bike on display wore a top three number plate.

For those not keeping up and/or wondering why he is still on crutches, Ratboy's foot is currently held together with wires and screws so that all of the wrecked tendons and dislocations could properly heal. He goes back under the knife in about a week to remove the wires, and after that he will commence in rehab that'll get him back on the bike.

Holy S**t didnt know it was that bad, I remember seeing his landing and just cringing, Hope you heal up soon!!!

 Thanks, I was wondering!

i know rats pain, soon as i saw the crash i knew it was a bad one i did pretty much the same thing about a year ago and my foot still isn't right!!... not that it keeps me off the bike or anything haha

I think people on the internet underestimate how difficult recovering from soft tissue injuries are. I really hope RatBoy comes back, but in all reality this injury has the potential to be a career-ender. Also, If I was RatBoy I'm not so sure I'd want carbon cranks on my bikes.
  • 10 13
Oh, so this is the reason why he didn't won the Hard Line. Heal up Ratboy, i want to see the replay this year in Leogang!
  • 4 0
@dthomp325, i had exactly the same thought hopefully we are wrong man.
  • 2 0
I was just going to say something about that. The fact he still on crutches 3 months later shows that he really did some serious damage to his foot. That's along time to be on crutches.
  • 4 0
I had a similar injury happen to me in June, I shattered my mid foot, broke 2 metatarsals, tore just about every ligament I could, and hemorrhaged a main muscle group all in my left foot. I had a plate and 6 screws installed and I'm still healing months later with Physical Therapy 3 days a week. Not a fun time.
  • 2 0
I thought I read that his doctor (or surgeon, can't remember) said that if he were a professional soccer player (or footballer as the rest of the world calls it) this type of injury would be a career ender. Needless to say, it's a pretty serious one. Hope he has a full recovery.
  • 2 1
Doesn't Söderström have a very similar injury from rolling his foot back under the pedal?
  • 4 0
Does anyone know what is exactly injury is? After a fracture dislocation of my mid foot a decade ago I had to spend 3 1/2 months non weight bearing. I can't help thinking bryceland must have done something similar. Happily I made pretty much full recovery. Hope he does too

@sino428 and @bubbaburger911 I broke my ankle in late July and I am still rehabbing. It was a a href="http://www.eorthopod.com/sites/default/files/images/adult_ankle_fx_trimalleolar.jpg">trimalleolar fracture/a> - nasty stuff. I hope to get cleared to ride next month. What Bryceland did was quite a bit worse, so no surprise he's on sticks three months out. I was on bed rest following surgery for a whole month, and I wasn't weight-bearing for two months.

 Just something i read online:

Mr Ioan Tudur Jones commented on the foot injury sustained by recently crowned world downhill champion Josh Bryceland.
"This is a high energy impact injury to his foot. From the video, and the image of his deformed foot, one has to suspect a fracture and dislocation of his mid foot . This is known as a Lisfranc injury. Left untreated in a plaster, prognosis is bad , however with early surgical reconstruction the outlook is much better. Expect him to be off his bike for at least 3 months”

I broke three metatarsal and shattered my cuboid in to about 20 pieces soft tissues damage and after having k wire and pins for 7 weeks I was back up and walking and working week after having it out! Painfull now and then still after 4 years but started riding DH 2 years ago and with support from 5ten soles doesn't bother me on bike at all.
  • 3 0
Really hope Josh can pull a Fabien Barel and come back quick in winning form. Also hope Stevie is back blazing it this season.

 D-dad, c-can we have some v-10s?
  • 3 1
so am I out to lunch or are all the frames the same and just the kit is different?
  • 3 0
@hetfield1 - I think it's definitely possible that an injury like this could be a career ender of someone playing conventional sports like football of basketball. Fortunately for Josh, Downhill, while pretty tough on the body overall, doesn't really require that many complex/precise/explosive movements of the foot and ankle. Not like other sports where you have to plant and cut and accelerate etc. As an example a couple years ago I tore up my ankle pretty good with a very severe sprain. I was out for a while but was able to put a wrap on it and get back to riding downhill in about 2 months. I wasn't able to start playing basketball at a normal level for about 4 months. The stress those sports puts on the feet and ankles is just completely different.
  • 1 0
This isn't going to keep him down. They're just doing everything they can to get it to 100% as fast as possible.
  • 1 0
Just tossed my crutches the other day, after being on them for 3 months myself after tearing my MCL & ACL, I feel the Rat's pain. I hope he is able to ditch them soon, being on them that long really sucks!
  • 1 1
@sino428 sounds about right, you don't actually need that much movement of the ankle to be able to bike, as the leg/foot position is fairly static. As soon as the soft tissue damage can cope with the impact forces of biking you can start getting back to it.
  • 4 0
DH shoes with a minimalistic carbon fiber exoskeleton for better foot protection and ankle support would not be a bad idea.Look at motocross boots…
  • 2 0
You can also just buy your standard lace up ankle brace/wraps as well and wear them with regular DH shoes.
  • 1 0
@Sadikone1 lolol i scrolled through just to look for the reference
  • 1 0
 @andybr4wny
Which five tens are you wearing? I'm recovering from 3 fractured metatarsals (no surgery fortunately) from back in August, and wish my shoes had better support. I have tried firmer insoles but wish I had a bit more support. Off the bike I can really only walk around in steel shank boots without soreness.
  • 1 0
@thinkbike this is a good point. It seems like an easy progression for the DH crowd to have shoes that offer more than just mild abrasion protection (rocks, roots, etc).
  • 1 0
I broke pretty the most of bonds during years. I can't image how important is the foot for "everything", biking included, before my heel's explosion.
So I assume 3 months on crutches are perfectly a normal time for an injury like that.
Of course I can't say I am the same as before, and I'll never be again. Some bonds determinate our life, other not at all.
I returned to pedal and push down hard .
Really wish you Rat to do the same!!
..and you are much younger than me and my bonds!
I am complitly sure Rat will race again at HIGHEST level, his level.

90's Santa Cruz looks like 2015 Orange...
  • 20 1
yeah 199X-2015 orange to be precise
  • 34 14
Yes covebomber that pretty much sums up most people's knowledge on bikes. I could merely point out that Orange 223 in 2005 was one of first bikes to have slack 63 head angles, lower BBs and longer TTs, something that took bikes like V10, M3, Sunday, few more years to become. But well, it just doesn't look mainstream cool enough so it sucks. I sound like a deeeight but it gets on my nerves...
  • 11 3
futuristic geometry but with awful progressivity and chain growth
  • 3 1
If the design is proven it evolves, just because it stays true to their roots and isn't bashed out in the Far East!!
  • 4 3
Add brake jack to that list. I ran an orange Patriot for a year or so but wouldn't have another one.
  • 16 11
Oranges are single pivots, simple and reliable, made in UK. If you feel better about yourself for tossing shyte on anyone or company then you are just deluded. It just keeps you sour and numb inside. Suspension Performance depends mainly on the shock performance and setup - unless something is really messed up, like first Maestro bikes, where first Glory bottomed like a East End slut. My Blur TR rode like piece of shit with stock Float CTD, just like my Nomad with stock DHX5. Ride what you like and take it easy on what you don't like. Ask yourself several questions why you don't like it, you may find some problem in your own backyard. Brake Jack, Pedal Bob, and the Stiction, it reminds me of something...
  • 11 5
Chill out bro. It was just an observation.
  • 4 1
sorry @wakidesigns...but you "tossed shyte" on @deeight from the moments U got on this thread.
  • 4 1
do you think its a coincidence that peaty rode for both brands?
  • 3 0
Thanks covebomber. Waki, I would add that they are supposed to perform much better with a ccdb shock so maybe I should have tried that setup instead. They're not that bad but I just think there are better bike designs out there for the same money these days. They are great if you don't like changing pivot bearings.
  • 3 2
tremeer023 - but that's what this product offers. Simplicity, reliability and that it is made in UK (it has nothing to do with quality, rather supporting local economy and jobs) A frame from Giant or Spec that is only slightly more expensive than Orange, costs way less to make. We may be talking numbers like 100$ or less, incl. hardware and shock. So as much as perfomance is on "complicated" bikes side, I would not feel "stripped" from money by paying for Orange, I am just too well aware that if blokes in UK can live off such margin then I am fudge packed by large business. Therefore I just cross that issue away to not be a hypocrite. I like YT for an honest price tag. There is no way in the world that alu Enduro, Bronson or Reign can cost more to make than Capra - factor in scale of orders made by Spec VS YT and you can get an idea.

Bearing life is not a whatever thing, it takes a lot of time and swearing to change them, if you have a Spec, Trek, Commencal, Kona, or anything having bearings around the drop out, you will need to change that sht often, due to small bearing size and magnitude of side forces involved.

Cheers!

I agree with the ccdb , I had the ccdb cs air on my alpine 160 and omg it was awesome... 5 seconds quicker on a full dh track than i was on my dh bike...

The real surprise is that you can now get a v10 for less than ten grand.
  • 8 0
 wait, 8799$ with ENVE wheelset?
that would be quite inexpensive

edit: I saw the answer of ambatt under: so 10.800$ with ENVE
  • 4 1
Yup. The full monty is $10,799 at most retailers with the ENVE kit.
  • 9 2
So I can still buy a 1200 sportster if I choose to not buy the V10. Don't have to downgrad to a 883. I'm reassured.
  • 7 2
so one of these or a 2015 Husqvarna TE 300.... tough choice.

  • 1 0
Just said that thanks to Santa Cruz price policy, I don't have to choose between a 883 Sportster and a V10, but between a 1200 Sportster and a V10.
Which is quite a simple choice.
So thank you, Santa ;-)
  • 1 0
 the TE climbs better!
  • 27 0
Props to Santa Cruz for a threaded BB here. Bike companies, if you're reading our drivel - PF is seen as a cost-savings measure and we as riders don't appreciate the diminished performance. My last bike purchase was guided by this feature - I chose an SB66 over a Remedy C.
  • 16 3
I am not a downhiller, the most air I catch is when I ride off the curb to test the rebound on my rear shock when adjusting my settings for different trails. But if I bought a downhill bike it would be a V-10! My choice is not because I am a super tech or anything, I just think the thing looks cool.

They went back to a 8.75" shock? The slightly larger tubes look better. Interesting that its less progressive as well. Common to hear these days among DH bikes. The shocks they ride must have some awesome damping.
  • 5 1
I think it's in order to keep the same chainstay length despite the larger wheels. They had to make adjustments.

Does anybody know what size bike Peaty and Rat race? I noticed the reach on the XL is still shorter than my large operator.
  • 3 0
I read that Bryceland rides a large and Peaty/Minaar ride XL
  • 4 0
They also had offset headset cups to lengthen, or shorten the reach. I believe they were all on the XL at the end of last season, with Peat and Minnaar running the cups forward and Josh had his reversed. Take a close look in the video around six seconds in for the former and 2.19 the latter. The Santa Cruz site as well as other media outlets show an XXL size which I guess would be what Peat and Minnaar will choose to use next season with Josh on the XL.
  • 2 1
Xxl..? Sc and intense (similair sizing) shouldn't need an xxl if they're sizes were truer.
Ie, modern geo= large tt 24.5-25/reach 17.5-18, xl tt 25-25.5/18.25-18.5ish reach.
They seem to be .5"ish short, imho.
  • 1 0
I think you've missed the point. Yes, an XXL V10. As in, larger than the current listed XL . I realize that different manufacturers refer to sizing differently and that SC has had a shorter reach compared to others. Look at the contradictory sizing info regarding this bike on various media outlet vs. SC website. That's why I asked the question. The new V10 and Nomad all have this 'modern geo' you refer to, with .5" longer top tubes. including the XL they have listed. What I am asking is will they produce the size they have listed with the 18.5" reach. Which is truly an XXL even by most modern geo standards. You are telling me that if they called the XXL and XL, they wouldn't need an XXL size and that goes without saying.
  • 1 1
Reach on xl gt sanction is over 19". Giant doesn't list reach, but a med reign is @17.5"(so figr xl reign ovr 19"), whereas as large intense tracer c is 17.2.
Modern geo=long front centers, short rear, short stems, low bb...right?
  • 1 0
 Yeah. so?
  • 1 0
I am not disagreeing that if they call the XXL an XL, it would make them 'truer' with other companies "modern geo". I just DON'T CARE. That's semantic bullsh*t. Toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe. Gimme big. Call it whatever. Huge-antor, Mega-mondo, Super-sized. I ride the current XL size and could use another inch of reach at 6'5"

  • 2 1
ENVE wheels are going to run you around $10,799 for the entire shebang. However -- you may decide that you want them in the ZEE version, which is also doable (although not sure why anyone would spend $3K on wheels and lower-priced componentry, but I've seen crazier shit).

so, what wheels that $8k+ get?
  • 2 0
I'm pretty impressed with the cheaper model. Good move from Santa Cruz.
  • 3 5
 1. So the V10 no longer has 10" of travel (not sure if this year's still had the 10" option)
2. They changed the wheelsize and "updated" the geometry but are still a few years behind the competition (63.5-64º headangle is considered steepish nowadays)
3. Top of the line model is cheaper than 2014 which is a good thing.
Having said all that, it does look good.

Ill buy a V10 for whoever knows the music, you have my word.
  • 1 0
its a remix of "the salmon song" by the chemical brothers
  • 1 0
Great vid, Id kill for that song / mix name??
  • 1 0
Frame only usd 3599 with rc4 or vivid air
  • 1 0
how much for a dvo frame n fork package..
  • 3 1
Why would you want such a heavy ass fork?
  • 10 1
Because some people prefer performance and reliability over making an already very light DH bike un-noticeably lighter.
  • 2 0
Zocchi 380 fork, boxxer wc/team, fox 40 air all good forks, not as heavy as the dvo, no dumb tapered steerertube, not sure how thr bslance will be on the v10 with a dvo, several people here dropped the dvo after a short time
  • 1 1
The dumb tapered steer is stronger, 380 has option of one also. I liked the dvo I tried, felt almost as good as my 888 avalanche Smile
  • 2 0
For 2015 they went back to 1 1/8 only. It may be stronger, but on the v10 you need an external lower cup, which increases stack height
  • 2 2
If I can bunny hop 180 to roll out on my dvo equipped v10 then the dvo isn't to heavy Smile

That would take a bit of the Rat out of the boy
  • 1 0
Aka, the santa cruz Christmas party.
  • 1 0
I'm thinking Rat can land to flat on a 10inch?
  • 1 0
 Dig in Ratboy, sweet rig.
  • 1 0
Now Santa, I have been a good boy. Let´s have one.
  • 1 0
so its the v8.5 now, haha
  • 5 0
Nah, the 1.5 you get extra from the new wheel size, 8.5 + 1.5 = V10. lol
  • 1 0
SRAM suspension with race face cockpit.; now owned by fox
  • 3 1
 Fuck 650b
  • 2 0
 AMEN.
  • 1 0
holdin out for the next-level 26x1-3/4 ISO wheel size? me 2.
  • 1 0
Nice bike. I will never be able to afford it. So Who does the music mix?
  • 3 2
 26" AIN'T DEAD.
  • 2 0
 sure seems that way.
  • 1 0
 It's a 650b dh bike. 26" is dying.
  • 3 0
It may be fading but it sure as hell is not dead. A 27.5/29" bike wheels move faster but a talented rider can beat anyone on a 26". Its not the wheels or how much carbon you have but how you use your bike. A bike should a extension of your body and you should not depended on a wheel size to be faster. If a rider Climb hills, practices sprint training, and just riding your bike. All these things will make your faster and a skilled cyclist. People can buy into this new era of bigger wheel sizes and pay high prizes for parts, since old parts are not compatible. In all honestly it comes down to hours on the seat and athletic capabilities to be strong on and off the dirt. I'm not hating on people who have 27.5/29 but a true talented cyclist can win on any wheel size.

  • 1 2
WTF Who runs a DHR on the front?
  • 3 0
 lots of people
  • 2 0
The new DHR is more like a beefed up Minion F , very good all-rounder front or rear , and very good on the brakes.
  • 2 0
Running them front and rear and I think a certain mr Minnaar won the 2013 world champs running the DHR2 front and rear. DHR2 on the front is amazing.
