Open-cast mining, winding towers and industry – this is what probably comes to your mind first when thinking of the Ruhr Area. Hardly anyone will associate the Ruhr Valley with breathtaking lines and thick doubles.

However, this is exactly what you can find in some areas where the coal dust has settled and the nature has recovered. Tobi Wrobel, who has already participated in numerous events such as the Nine Knights Festival and is known for letting it rip, took the time to see what the area next to a six-lane motorway has to offer. He actually found top-class freeride lines, about which no one talks in times of enduro.

Well all the good old 180mm bikes (Cannondale Claymore, Scott Genius, sx trail or enduro evo, trek slash) now got a downgrade to 160mm suiting the enduro and 650b hype or are discontinued. Also rockshox has totally dumped their totem (I am still waiting for a comeback like they did with the pike). But I think there is a huge capability of a comeback by making uphill capable, super fun descending bikes, using air suspension like the vivid air or the new fox float x2. Like the rose soul fire: it weighs about 14kg I guess and you obviously can shred with it.

I'm riding a 2014 NS Soda - freeride set up. 180mm front and rear. 26" pure shredding-whipping machine. I love it.
(Waiting for that new Fox DH shock to come out) Smile

I like to say that a real freeridebike is build up with a rock shox lyrik oder fox 36 float, because everthing else is quit heavy. I sold my freeridebike about 4 weeks ago (transition tr250) because it wasnt that what i want. i rode it for 3-4 months and i checked that i have more fun on a real dh bike! Now i have a knolly podium Big Grin *-*

yeah bike companys, make more freeride bikes, that's what its all about, keeping it real, awesome vid

i was just lookin around for a new 180mm bike too
  • 7 0
Freeride bikes are more than capable for us average riders. Bike companies probably enjoy the profit margins of there DH bikes better tho.
  • 12 5
anything with 27.5" wheels isnt freeride bra
  • 15 2
 true. 26ers never die!
  • 2 0
Banshee Darkside..I traded my Nukeproof Scalp for this little fun machine, best decision i've ever made. 180mm of rear travel very light, playfull bike you have the choice between 26" or 27.5" and they look so dam good. Freeride bikes ain't dead.

Faved partly because of the title, but that was some sick riding!!! that slo mo jump was huge...

Slope is the strongest thing in the sport & that's highly unlikely to change. It's as "freeride" as anything else.

Get rowdy, go big & stuff your fvckin' labels.

Love the big step down sender @ the end bruh.

When all mountains are levelled flat, freeride might be die.
  • 1 0
Since when did people consider it dead?
  • 6 2
 Freeride is 26"
Enduro and DH are 27.5" or 29"

Sadly nowadays the main focus on the industry is purely on racing against the clock, and not on hucking big shit and doing real freeride like in the first half of the New World Disorder series.
  • 4 0
It's not even racing against the clock because 26" bikes are not slower and they were proving that to their last minutes on the circuits.
  • 5 0
I didn't mean to say that bigger wheelsizes are faster, but I can see how my post can get interpreted that way Smile

It's just that the only 2 real freeride mountainbiking 'competitions' left are Red Bull Rampage and the FEST Series. Where 10 years ago all the focus on extreme type of cycling were on having fun, building and hitting north shores, road gaps, etc, nowadays it is rather focussed on who can be that 0.1 second faster on the downhill track.

Don't get me wrong, I love riding downhill, but I get much more pleasure out of the trail when riding at 90% of my maximum speed, than when I give it my full 100%, pedal as fast as I can on every part that allows me to, and purely put my mind to being that 0.1 second faster and being totally out of breath, instead of focussing on the feeling of freedom that riding gives me and to rather try to catch a nice flow.
