Schwalbe 27+ tires - Is this the new standard?

New standards in mountain biking are a big story these days. On one side the industry wants to make things better, faster and stronger, but at the same time it makes it harder for the consumer to decide which trend they want to follow and what kind of bike is the right one for their riding.

Just like the consumer, we at Schwalbe, must decide which trends to follow. With the recent introduction of the 27+ Nobby Nic and Rocket Ron treads we are following the bicycle manufactures lead and meeting the demands of future 27+ bikes.

Markus Hachmeyer is Schwalbe`s head of product management, a former World Cup MTB racer and is now the mastermind behind all recent MTB treads and technologies.

Schwalbe's head of product management Markus Hachmeyer explains:
bigquotesAfter speaking with many bicycle manufacturers, we know the 27+ movement has strong support within the industry and we will see a significant number of plus size bikes introduced later this year. High-volume tires are nothing new in the tire world, but with the focus shifting from the hardtail/bike packing sector to the trail bike market, 27+ invites an entirely new rider into the mountain bike world. With significantly increased grip and additional suspension, 27+ bikes can create more confidence in all aspects of riding, especially in technical situations, where the less skilled rider may have previously been scared away.

Schwalbe 27.5 images
28% bigger contact patch with a 27+ tire - one reason for 27+

As Mr. Hachmeyer eluded too, 27+ tires offer considerably more grip than its thinner predecessor. The high-volume of 27+ tires allow the rider to run a lower tire pressure resulting in more progressive dampening from the tire as well as creating a 28% larger contact area, both factors combine to keep the tire glued to the ground in technical terrain inspiring confidence for all riders. Simply put, more grip means more confidence.

With the increase in size, the debate continues over how big is too big and which size is best. It’s our belief that riders should always be able to choose what it best for their riding style and conditions, therefore we decided to offer both the Nobby Nic and Rocket Ron in 2.8” and 3.0”. The 2.8” offering a more sporty and nimble feel for the experienced rider, while the 3.0” inspires more confidence inspiring grip for individuals new to the sport.

The size debate will forever rage on, but 27+ offers a new riding experience for riders of all levels. The confidence inspiring grip and additional suspension will encourage more people to go beyond the pavement and explore the trails of the world, growing the sport we all love…Mountain Biking. And that is something we can all agree on.

The Nobby Nic tread looks familiar but with more spacing in between the blocks and reduced block height.
Schwalbe 27.5 images
Since Rocket Ron is a open tread with small studs, the tread got an additional row of side studs. Rocket Ron is a great tire for XC and trail riding.

The new 27+ tires will be available by Eurobike 2015.

Typical "we decide what you will like" industry bullshit. Most of us like our normal tires just fine, thank you.

Think about it like this: let's say a few people need, for some reason, to own a tank instead of a car (doesn't matter why). That's cool, but just because a few dudes own tanks instead of cars doesn't force all car manufacturers to start adding tanks to their product line. Why? Because they know the vast majority of people don't want to drive a f*cking tank around.

I want to drive a tank around...

i love how in todays world of mtb marketing - everything needs to be rated as some percentage better than its predecessor. THIS NEW SUPER AWESOME NEW REALLY GREAT TIRE IS 28% BETTER THAN YOUR OLD STUPID USELESS LESS COOL OLD TIRE! 28%!!!!! its like they are marketing to kids or something. god. i hope people dont buy into this crap.
  • 10 2
This almost seems like a marketing scheme to convince beginner and intermediate riders that they can ride the most extreme terrain if they buy a bike with a little bit bigger and wider tires. Imagine the sales pitches on the sales floor; "you'll be doing Rampage stuff! "

Not even downhill racers like these big tires, why in the hell would anybody want to pedal up a hill with them?

But nevertheless, I would still like to try it and might even like it on some trails. I'm down with diversity.

"Not even downhill racers like these big tires, why in the hell would anybody want to pedal up a hill with them?"
perfect counter argument to this crap
  • 2 2
Surely the extra weight and rolling resistance will reduce your speed which counteracts the old 28% more grip. I think where were currently at with the speed vs grip compromise is pretty good. Just more marketing bs yaaaaay. " this cheddar cheese is more cheesy than this one so buy it".
  • 4 1
You got it all wrong. Sure this is not for downhill and rampage stuff.
I really think the budget ht or fully 1000-1500€ with no good suspension will really profit of such big tires.

The immensive grip/traction plus and less risk of flats are amazing.
  • 1 1
me too! Where do they sell tanks?

Schwalbe 27+ tires - Is this the new standard?

No, its not. Bye.
  • 3 2
It didn't work in the past, and it won't work now.
  • 2 1
 I had 26+ and 24+ on my old bighit , 3 " gazzis how I don't miss you
  • 10 1
At the end of the day it is still the end users who decide whether a new standard is better. If there isn't a market for it, people won't buy it and companies will stop making it.
  • 2 0
But, The majority of bike complete bike sales an the biggest money income for large bike companies, manufacturing an distro is to newbies. People that are more easily convinced by the sales guy that this is the latest technology, this is the bike for you
  • 2 0
They're a tyre company, they'll whore themselves out to any standard, because they have to be accomodating to any size. The deciding factor will be frames
  • 7 1
At the end of the day......it gets dark!
  • 8 1
It may in the future be a new standard but calling it a new standard when the prototype has just been released is ridiculous. the writer is just trying to get people angry. maybe a title that says " is it better?" is a more reasonable
  • 10 1
 yes bigger equals more grip
but doesnt it also mean more friction and more weight ?
  • 12 1
GOOD NEWS : now we are faster with our 26 Wheel !
less weight, less Rolling resistance, and if we want good grip, we can still get some 2.50 magic mary and destroy those +/fat bikes in uphill and dowhnill yaayyy
  • 9 2
Also a bigger tyre at super low pressure will have the handling of a hot air balloon
  • 6 1
plus 730g for a 27.5 x 3.0 tyre means you have to ride on fire roads or on grass only. Well I mean IMBA trail
  • 3 1
Same thing in the UK , most ' official' trail centres are pretty much over worked, smooth gravel, overly sanitised pavement trails Pretty much who the industry is aiming these complete bike sales at. Newbies at the trail centre
  • 4 2
remeber the nokian gazzoldi been there done that it wasnt big and it wasnt clever
  • 3 0
gazzis were shit though. Modern tread patterns casings and compounds are light years ahead of those old square blocks.

true @game they where shittty tyres

Sooooooo many haters, just as a different point of view, I have a prototype mk2 Stanton ti switchback, which is 650b and plus compatible, and I have two sets of wheels for it, hope tech enduro's with 2.4 onza ibex's, and a set of wtb scraper rims on hope hubs, with wtb Bridger/trail boss tyres, 3.0" from, 2.8 rear, they're a 45mm internal width rim, tubeless. My first ride on it was at a trail centre (llandegla) reason being I've ridden that place a lot on other bikes so I know it well, so I put my strava on just as a matter of interest, and I was shocked at the outcome, 70 odd cups on my personal bests, with 48 of them being pb's. I was amazed at how well the bike climbed, it wasn't draggy like I expected, and the handling was amazing, so much grip it was unreal, genuinely taken aback, now the hope wheels barely get a look in, so all I'm saying is don't write it off before you've tried it, always nice to keep an open mind! Smile

Have to agree with you on this. I recently bought a Cube Stereo 150 plus (my first new bike purchase), and can honestly say its a load of fun. Gives me extra confidence (need it these days as im 44!), have been riding for 4 years now. Converted to tubeless very easily with the nice wide DTSwiss XM551s. Comes with 3.0 Nobby Nics, and I love the way you can get loose easily but still undercontrol. It climbs great, and decends great, for me this is all I want. I ride the local trails in South Wales, but have ridden Llandegla a few times, gets snowy at the top when its cold, great little trail.

One thing to consider is that there may well be a larger contact patch but in sloppy conditions a narrower tire has greater traction - grip isn't exclusively about size of contact patch. I can't really see this being confidence inspiring in the UK in winter.
  • 1 0
So true. Same issue here in the PNWet.
  • 5 0
I don't even like the way bikes ride with wide rims, so I can't see myself liking this 27.5+ thing. 25mm internal on the front and 23mm on the rear is as wide as I will ever go.
  • 9 1
 Had a fatbike. Never again.
  • 4 1
Am I the only one who really like the news? I normally ride on my knolly delirium 26" 40mm Syntace wheels and tried the surly dirtwizard 26+ tires and it was just great. My bike 17kg bike raced like an XC machine, with grip where drifting throuh corners feels super secure. Wow. But the fun was short surly tires have no quality, and then always flats Frown
So now I hope Schwalbe brings better quality maybe not for my Knolly there i have my best tires so far: Hans Dampf+Rock Razor but for nice travelling ht rig or so.

I like options so I like this.
  • 9 2
Not the new standard at all. Just the newest hype in the industry!
  • 5 2
Right....this is not a new standard and don't you dare tell us it is. Seasoned mountain bikers are sick to the back teeth of you guys ramming "new standards" down our throats. We never actually need a bigger size than 26" wheels did we??? DID WE???
  • 4 1
For a start 650b is not 27.5", its only about 3/4" bigger than 26" and feels almost unnoticeably different to 26", secondly, fat tyres weigh a sh!t ton and have massive rolling resistance. If you want to have a slow, heavy bike with tons of unsprung weight, poor acceleration and crap manoeuvrability which will likely result in you being knackered after climbing the first hill and then stacking on the downhill as you're too tired to lift the cumbersome front wheel over jumps/obstacles then choose 650b+

This new standard is ridden by almost no one and is pure marketing trash and its getting really tiring!
  • 5 0
isnt that cheating... of course low pressure going to create more contact patch....
  • 3 0
The best thing we can do is let them release their crap. But we buy what we want. Then they will stop making crap. Or put good stuff prices up to pay for the crap.. Sorry new standards.
  • 3 1
Not a fair test - 1.7bar in 29" and only 1bar in 27+.... of course it's going to have more contact area under 59% less pressure.
To be fair they should've measured the % increase in tyre deflection when under loads then measured the contact patch.
  • 4 0
I won't be convinced on plus sized tires until someone wins a DH world cup on them
  • 4 0
I love these new tires because I can now buy my 26" Maxxis Minion for 20 €, so that's all good for me Big Grin

Does anyone here think that we're going to be given a 26+ choice? I don't think I would use one of them but I also can't see me using 27.5+ or 29+. So to anyone trying to tell us to stop complaining about new choices such as these new standards - well where's our 26 option huh? I completely see the purpose of different wheel sizes and have no issue with 27.5" or 29" wheels or even their "+" sized variants, but just as they have their uses, so does 26. My issue is that the changes in trend that are apparently giving us more choice, are actually taking an option away.

 Dave Turner thinks so:

forums.mtbr.com/turner/plus-size-sultans-965331.html

To quote:

it's an existing sultan with wider wheels and tight clearance. That is what we have been riding here, so and it is much different feel than 2.3's..

On another note, got my Nextie 35mm carbon rims for twenty six (26") and will them lace up to put on the Burner, or the wifes Flux.

26 WILL take over again, mark the calendar. More Plus traction for more fun, smaller radius for more enduroability. Sounds like fun to me

They can't offer you 26+ because it would pretty much nullify 27 normal xD
  • 3 0
 I have a 27.b that I am going to turn into a 26+ this winter i think
  • 1 0
PB should get hold of two similar bikes, one standard 650b enduro/ trail bike and another as similar as possible in 650b+ and give us the low down.
My concerns are rolling resistance and increased unsprung weight of these bigger tyres, could be they're unfounded but we'll never know (I certainly am not inundated with opportunities to demo 650b+!) unless the journos get out there and give us some real world riding experiences!
  • 2 0
Am I the only one who thinks this could be great way to revive my trail hardtail 29er? These 27.5+ tyres are roughly the same circumference as a 29er right?

29+ is a bit of an abomination, however Wink
  • 2 1
all three of my bikes are still 26inch and there all still awesome, i have heaps of fun on them every time i ride, and guess what actually riding my bike more makes me a better rider! not some company telling me ill be 28% better on a bigger tire haha
  • 1 0
There's races for fatbikes, for glorified hybrid bikes (CX/gravel grinders), but none yet for plus sized tires. Wonder how they're gonna organize one of those to play to the reduced-fat tires' advantages, without restricting other tire sizes.
  • 1 0
I have had all the tire sizes. Each one is fun in its own way. What concerns me about these on my 27+ bike is the horrible sidewall durability Schwalbe has had on its tubeless products. Snakeskin etc. sounds great, but these my Schwalbes always rip before the tread nubs are even worn off... With fatter low volume tires like these, I wonder how it will put up with all the schist I roll through, not to mention mica and granite.
  • 4 0
 Coming soon: 26+ hahaha
  • 2 0
Soon? I been rocking 26 with 2.7 super tackys for Years!!
Also, have you seen how big 2.4 ardents come up? They HUGE!
  • 4 1
 Increased contact patch/traction...

no mention of rolling resistance? Folding in aggressive cornering?
  • 2 2
Not being funny but running a tyre that is nearly 0.5" wider than another is going to give you a larger contact area. We don't need Schwalbe to point that out it's common sense, nice try though Schwalbe to make it look like you've done something revolutionary, however.....FAIL!!!
  • 1 0
 Hey Schwalble,
Can you please release the ProCore system which we were told would be out in Q1?
After that, you can spend all the energy / resources you want developing tire / wheel sizes.

Thanks

oh dear, it's Gazzaloddis all over again!
  • 1 1
ridiculous! ordinary people like me will be using what pros are using in DH , enduro, XC. with +tyres all you have is massive rolling resistance and weight! All my hobby life i have been trying to reduce both on my bike.
