N1NO`s 5th chapter of his #huntforglory webisodes is all about a journey to the roots of mountain biking. The 3x MTB World Champion meets one of the godfathers of mountain biking, Tom Ritchey, at his home in Skyline, Northern California. Tom Ritchey is the guy who was already racing bicycles, which we call 'mountain bikes' today, back in the 1970s on his backyard trails in the hills of Skyline and Santa Cruz. He built the first mountain bike frame, and since those early days, every new invention has been chased by another.

Over the years Tom's focus has shifted from frame building to component design, but his obsession with functional, lightweight and reliable equipment has not wavered. Many Ritchey designs and manufacturing methods have become industry standards.

Mountain bike racing has always been something Tom Ritchey has been passionate about. 3x World Champion Thomas Frischknecht was part of Ritchey`s Racing team in the 1990's. Still today, Tom creates World Championshipwinning parts for the top guys like N1NO. As a Co-Sponsor of SCOTT-Odlo MTB Racing, Tom contributes to the Team`s success with innovative products and his experience.

N1NO and Frischi not only rode singletrack where mountain biking was born, but Tom Ritchey also showed them where the first frames where welded and where all of his his inspiration came from. N1NO got to know more about the early days, and Tom Ritchey explained how Mountain Biking came into existence.

What Ritchey says there about Nino is why i like him more than the other xc guys, he has fun on his bike trowing whips around and turning the bars when theres a jump or drop. Its not all power and performance its something deeper that only someone that truly loves bikes can have

Nino races ews events, I think top 20. Like Fontana. Xc guys are faster than dh racers going downhill and both riding xc bikes.

I doubt anyone writing here could keep up with tom ritchey. Going up or down the hill. Guy rides 15-20k miles x year. Raced the South African mtb stage race, etc etc, was national junior champion I think....

Ha - love the ending with Thomas egging Nino to ride the old P-21. I have a couple old Ritchey Timberwolves - they are pieces of art now (fillet brazed bars, forks and frame) but man they suck in ride quality compared to modern bikes.

The industry has come a long way!

Tom ritchey is king, but the company holding is name is run by marketers. And company run by marketers produce bad products. 2x9 was not "invented" by ritchey. Remember what happened after marketing people told fisher was the inventor of mtb?

I need to get my Dad on a Mountainbike.

Tom Richey had some Gary Fisher stuck in his teeth. Nothing some actual riding can't dislodge though.

My backyard trails ended up on a PB video. Kinda neat.

"...But up here, it's where mountain biking started!". It's awesome to see someone like Nino Schurter totally geeking out on that. Seriously.
