I met Claudio back in February, near Santiago, Chile. We were documenting the Andes Pacifico enduro race and sat crammed, side by side, in one of the race shuttles heading back to camp after a long day of shooting. I noticed his camera bag and though my Spanish is virtually non-existent, we managed to communicate enough for him to show me his work from the day. I was impressed by his images and by a passion for the sport that was evident through the language barrier - a love for mountain bikes knows no borders (I was also grateful for the fact that he introduced me to empanadas, which are the Chilean equivalent of calzones and incredibly tasty). The following interview is written in English and in Spanish. Disfrutar!

Tell us a bit about yourself: My name Is Claudio Olguin and I’m 24 years old. I live in Melipilla, Chile (it’s about 65 kilometres away from Santiago, Chile). I’ve loved this place since I was born because it’s very quiet and far away from the noise of the capital. Before discovering mountain bikes I tried a few other sports: I played baseball, track and field, skateboarding, and some others. Finally, I found two wheeled sports. It was a happy accident, some classmates practiced this discipline and it was they who invited me to pedal to the hill, where even today, is one of the places where I feel most comfortable and happy.
Cuéntanos un poco sobre ti: Mi nombre es Claudio Olguín y tengo 24 años. Vivo en la comuna de Melipilla (a unos 65 kilómetros de Santiago, capital de Chile) desde que nací y me gusta este lugar por ser tranquilo y alejado del ruido. Antes de practicar mountainbike pasé por varios deportes, estuve en el baseball, atletismo, skate entre otros. Finalmente llegué al deporte de dos ruedas de una manera casual, ya que algunos amigos del colegio practicaban esta disciplina y ellos fueron los que un día de junio me invitaron a pedalear al cerro, donde hasta el día de hoy, es uno de los lugares donde me siento mas cómodo y tranquilo.

How long have you been shooting photos? I was introduced to photography at an early age. My dad had a camera that he brought with us on family outings on the weekend, I remember pressing the button as if something good would come out of that. My family has a lot of influence on me to be a part of this world of images, my father always wanted to be a photographer but, due to matters of work and time, he could not realize that dream. The first camera I had was a Zenit 122 which still works.
¿Cuanto tiempo haz estado tomando fotografías? La fotografía fue presentada a mi vida desde muy pequeño, mi papá tenia una cámara fotográfica la que llevaba a los paseos familiares de fin de semana, recuerdo que yo la tomaba y apretaba el botón como si algo bueno fuese a salir de eso. Mi familia tiene mucha influencia en que yo fuera parte de este mundo de imágenes, mi padre siempre quiso ser fotógrafo pero por asuntos de trabajo y tiempo, no pudo concretar ese sueño. La primera cámara que tuve fue una Zenit 122 que aun conservo intacta.

Were you self-taught or have you gone to school for photos? I graduated this month from Instituto Profesional Los Leones where I studied photography for four years. During that time I won two awards, for journalism and for advertising. It’s amazing that my thesis and degree are almost completely based around mountain biking.
¿Eras un autodidacta o estudiaste fotografía? Estudié fotografía durante cuatro años, en ese proceso obtuve dos menciones, periodística y publicitaria. El último periodo de estudio, que fue finalizado en julio de este año, se trato de mi tesis y examen de grado que iba ligada completamente con el mountainbike.
Do you have another job, or do you work exclusively as a photographer? I’m a full time photographer.
¿Tienes otro trabajo, o trabajas solamente como fotógrafo? Mi trabajo es desarrollado en cuanto a las fotografías, por ende, soy fotógrafo full time.

How long have you been shooting mountain biking? Approximately four and a half years. The first mountain bike race that I attended with a camera was in March 2010, it was a high school race near Santiago. After that my life was inseparable from mountain bikes.
¿Cuánto tiempo ha estado tomando fotografías de mountain bike?Hace aproximadamente cuatro años y medio, la primer carrera de Mountainbike que visite con una cámara fue en Marzo de 2010 a un interescolar que se hacia en las cercanías de Santiago. Después de eso decidí no separarme del Mountainbike.
Do you ride? How does that affect your images? I’ve been riding downhill for about five years. Initially, I rode for fun, although sometimes I participated in races. I always liked to enjoy the freedom of riding downhill. I prefer to ride for fun, there’s no pressure when I’m shooting and spectating at races. However, I don’t actually have a bicycle these days, therefore I can’t ride. When I decided to study photography I sold everything I had to prioritize buying a good camera, lenses, and everything necessary to make my career. I believe that the time I didn’t ride actually helped to make the images that I’m most satisfied with. When you are in front of the object that you want to photograph, you have an infinite number of things around you, and those are the things that generally help to make a great shot. When I take photos I like to see myself in the rider, and in one way I try to know or imagine the result of the photograph.
Andas en bicicleta? Como impacta esto en tus imágenes?Hice downhill cinco años. En un comienzo practiqué este deporte de una manera amateur, aunque en algunas ocasiones participé en competencias. Siempre me gustó disfrutar la bajada de una manera libre y no presionándome por un reloj. Actualmente no tengo bicicleta, por lo tanto no tengo maquina que montar. Cuando entre a estudiar fotografía decidí vender todo lo que tenia de mi bicicleta priorizando comprar una cámara, lentes y lo necesario para comenzar sin problemas. Si bien no practiqué muchos años mountainbike, encuentro que el tiempo que lo ejercí me sirvió bastante para hacer imágenes que realmente me dejan satisfecho. Cuando estas en frente al objetivo que quieres fotografiar, tienes una infinidad de cosas a tu alrededor y por lo general la gran mayoría de las veces, ayudan a hacer una bonita toma. Cuando fotografío me gusta verme reflejado en el rider, y de alguna manera, saber que desea encontrar como resultado de la fotografía.

Do you shoot anything else besides mountain biking? I try to go to every local sports event; I love motocross, BMX, skate, surf and many others. A few years ago I worked in triathlon races but today I only work in mountain bike races.
¿Fotografías algo mas que mountain bike? Trato de ir a la gran mayoría de eventos deportivos, me gusta mucho el motocross, BMX, skate, surf y otros deportes. Hace un par de años atrás trabajé en carreras de triatlón y duatlón pero hoy solo trabajo en carreras de mountainbike.
What is your favourite thing to shoot? I’m really passionate about mountain bike photography. There is nothing as peacefulness as walking in the mountains. It’s lovely walking with a bag full of lenses and equipment to make photos. It’s such a great feeling that more people should experience, because the weight of the things that you carry become a minor detail if you truly like what you do.
¿Cual es tu cosa favorita de fotografíar? Me apasiona mucho fotografiar mountainbike. Uno de los puntos fundamentales que hay en ello es la tranquilidad que ofrece caminar por la montaña, es un espacio que se hace realmente agradable a pesar de llevar la mochila cargada de equipos. Es una sensación tan buena que muchos deberían experimentar, el peso de las cosas que llevas suele ser un detalle si realmente te gusta lo que haces.

What is the mountain bike culture like in South America? Is it becoming more popular? Mountain biking in South America seems to be growing in popularity, many people are approaching the sport with curiosity, some of them enjoy descending hills as fast as possible while others prefer to go cycling with their family or friends in a less daring manner. It doesn’t matter how they ride as long as more people are getting out on bikes. On the competitive side, it seems there are more tourists and pros than ever before that visit South America to attend races. These events focus the eyes of the world on this continent. Among some of the most popular competitions are the: "Descenso del Cóndor" in Bolivia, "Open Shimano LAtam" in Argentina, Brasil y Chile, "Enduro World Series" Round 1 in Chile, "Andes Pacífico" in Chile, "Downhill Urbano Manizales" in Colombia, and the ‘’Valparaíso Urban Downhill Race’’ in Chile, among many other events that I can't remember.
Marathon XC riding is very popular in South America, this discipline attracts huge numbers of people, of all ages, whatever the weather. The participants in these races are gladiators! Enduro in Chile is growing too. There is a group called Montenbaik Enduro producing events. In the beginning it started with an average of 40 competitors per round, with three races per year. Now, after six years, there are 300 spots, which are sold out within hours of registration opening, and way more races. Without going any further, I’d like to praise the work of Montenbaik Enduro, they were responsible for hosting an Enduro World Series race in Nevados de Chillan, Chile, this year.
¿Como es la cultura de Mountainbike en Sudamérica? ¿Se esta haciendo mas popular? El Mountainbike sudamericano cada vez apunta a un publico mas amplio de gente que lo practica o se acerca por curiosidad, algunos disfrutan de este deporte bajando colinas lo mas rápido posible mientras que otros optan por pasear en bicicleta junto a su familia o amigos de una manera menos arriesgada, lo entretenido de esto es que cada vez se suma mas gente a ocupar la bicicleta. Por otro lado hablando de competencias deportivas puedo decir que cada vez son mas las personas que visitan Sudamérica asistiendo a diferentes carreras las que centran por un momento los ojos del mundo en este continente, entre algunas de las competencias mas populares que se han realizado en este lugar esta el Descenso del cóndor en Bolivia, Open Shimano Latam en Argentina, Brasil y Chile, Enduro World Series round 1 Chile, Andes Pacifico en Chile, Downhill urbano Manizales en Colombia, urban Downhill race en Valparaíso, Chile entre otros eventos que no puedo recordar.
Es muy popular el XC Maratón, en esta disciplina del Mountainbike asiste un cantidad de gente, de todas las edades, que sin importar el clima se reúne para participar en estas carreras, sin duda son unos gladiadores. Por otro lado el enduro en Chile esta tomando cada vez mas fuerza, existiendo un campeonato que se llama Montenbaik Enduro que produce los eventos. En el principio esto partió con un promedio de 40 competidores por fecha y tres carreras anuales, actualmente y después de seis años, son 300 cupos los que se completan a horas de abrirse las inscripciones. Sin ir mas lejos, y alabando el trabajo de Montenbaik Enduro, fue aquí en Chile donde se realizó la primera fecha del EWS en este año.
What is unique and special about Chile? Chile is located at the end of the world and has vastly different climates, flora, and fauna, depending on where you go. You can go from the Andes to the sea in just three hours, driving at a safe speed. This country has many different regions, starting from the north, which has an arid desert climate, the central area mixes the rainy and dry in the summer, and the south has rain most of the year and lush green hills. Any rider would be happy to visit this country; I know they would fall in love with Chile after experiencing the culture and witnessing the countless wonders of places like Patagonia and Torres del Paine, among others.
¿Que hay de único y especial en Chile? Chile se encuentra al final del mundo contando con diversos climas, flora y fauna entre otras cosas. Aquí es donde puedes conocer la Cordillera de los Andes y el mar en tan solo 3 horas, a una velocidad prudente. Este país tiene muchos escenarios, comenzando en el norte, que posee un clima árido y desértico, por otro lado la zona central que mezcla lo lluvioso y seco en el verano mientras que el sur posee lluvia gran parte del año y cerros llenos de verde. Sin duda cualquier lector estaría encantado de conocer este país, enamorándose de su cultura y las incontables maravillas que conserva como la Patagonia, Torres del Paine entre otras.

You’ve documented some top pros (like Mick Hannah and Jerome Clementz) racing at the Andes Pacifico and the Enduro World Series. What is it like shooting with professionals from around the world? Working with professional riders is really challenging and exciting. It’s difficult because you must set aside the fact that you’re a fan of these riders, and you must be professional yourself. What caught my attention is that these people are very simple and they’ll talk about everyday things, not just their work.
Haz documentado alguno de los mejores corredores (como por ejemplo, Mick Hannah y Jerome Clementz) que han competido en el Andes Pacifico y Enduro World Series. ¿Como es trabajar con profesionales de todo el mundo? Trabajar con riders profesionales es realmente un reto y una emoción que se percibe en cada momento, debes dejar aun lado ser el fan y tomar tu equipo para trabajar con ellos. Lo que me llama mucho la atención es que estas personas son muy sencillas y dispuestas a hablar de cualquier tema, incluso aquellas cosas que no son de trabajo.
What kind of cameras do you use? What lenses? Is there any other gear that you use frequently like flashes? The first DSLR camera I had was a Nikon D40; unfortunately it broke down just after I bought it. After that I went into the world of Canon. My principal cameras are a Canon 1D MK III and a Canon 7D as a backup. I combine that with a 15mm fisheye, a 17-40mm, and a 70-200mm. I also use Pocket Wizards to light shots from a distance. I am very pleased with the equipment that I have. Although it is not the latest technology, it is just what I need in terms of size, weight, and comfort when I’m working. A few years ago I read about a photographer who only took photos with natural light. That motivated me to put aside the flash if it is not really necessary.
¿Que tipo de cámaras usas? ¿Que lentes? Hay algún otro tipo de herramienta que uses frecuentemente como flashes? La primera cámara réflex que tuve fue una “Nikon D40” que lamentablemente murió al tiempo que la compré, después de eso me fui al mundo de Canon. Actualmente tengo una canon 1D mk III como primer cuerpo y una canon 7d como cámara de respaldo, eso lo convino con un 15mm Fisheye, 17–40mm, 70–200mm. Ademas ocupo Pocket wizard para disparar a distancia. Me agrada mucho el equipo que tengo, si bien no es lo ultimo en tecnología es lo justo que necesito en cuanto a tamaño, peso y comodidad al momento de trabajar. Hace unos años leí sobre un fotógrafo que solo ocupaba luz natural en sus imágenes, eso me motivó a dejar de lado el flash y no hacer imágenes con luz artificial si no es realmente necesario.

What photo are you most proud of? Why? One photo would be hard to choose, although I do have one shot of Cedric Gracia cornering hard in a sandy berm, which stands out to me. I think it’s one of my favourite images because of the story behind it. We shot it at the end of four days of work and it was taken at the last minute, just before Cedric had to pack his bags to return home. Cedric came into that corner at full speed and, since I was shooting with a fisheye lens, I had to stand really close and prepare to be covered in dirt. And when I say covered in dirt, I mean that it filled my eyes so that I could not see. He seemed quite impressed, so much so that he took out his cellphone and snapped a selfie with me right after seeing my face in pain. That was without a doubt, a very funny moment.
¿De que foto estas mas orgulloso? ¿Porque? Una foto en especial seria un poco cruel de mi parte, tengo fotos que me gustan bastante y es por el contenido que ellas tienen. Pero en particular la de Cedric Gracia curvando con fuerza en una curva de arena, es una de las imágenes que me gusta mucho, esto es porque fueron cuatro días de trabajo y esa toma se hizo en el ultimo minuto, justo cuando ya casi debía hacer sus maletas para embarcarse a su hogar. De pronto veo a Cedric muy rápido con dirección a mi y solo me preparé para recibirlo de la mejor manera, de pronto este rider curva muy rápido dejándome lleno de tierra. Y cuando digo lleno de tierra, me refiero a que no alcance a cerrar los ojos, el parecía muy asombrado tanto así que tomo su celular e hizo una selfie conmigo justo después de ver mi cara de dolor, ese fue un momento de mucha risa.
Which photographers do you admire? I am constantly looking at images from different photographers who do different sports, particularly Brian Bielmann who shoots surfing and is a magician with the camera, and mountain bike photographer Sven Martin; his images are jaw dropping. I feel great admiration for Robert Capa and his documentation of war, especially the Normandy landings. Thanks to photojournalists there are photographic records of important historical events. These people face dangerous situations behind the lens and that deserves all the respect in the world.
Cuales son los fotógrafos que admiras: Constantemente estoy mirando imágenes de diferentes fotógrafos que hacen distintos deportes, como por ejemplo el de Brian Bielmann quien es un mago con una cámara. Por otro lado Sven Martin es quien admiro en cuanto a fotografía de mountainbike, tiene la capacidad de hacer imágenes que dejan con la boca abierta a cualquiera, eso es muy valorable. Por otro lado sin tener nada que ver con el mountainbike, siento gran admiración por Robert Capa y la completa edición de imágenes de guerra que hizo en el desembarco de Normandía, gracias a él existen películas que se recrearon de acuerdo a sus registros fotográficos. Enfrentar al mundo con una cámara de frente merece todos los respetos del mundo.

What advice would you give to young photographers to improve their photos? Something that has helped me is to be persistent in everything I do, and to try and always be kind to others. Interest in a subject makes it easier to achieve good results too. There is no use being persistent if you do not practice and constantly take pictures. It’s all practice, I do not think anyone is born with a gift, or the skills to do something.
¿Que consejo le darías a los fotógrafos jóvenes para mejorar sus fotografías ? Algo que me ha ayudado mucho es ser perseverante en todo lo que hago y siempre ir con la mejor disposición a todo, tener interés llama mas fácil a un buen resultado. Por otro lado no sirve ser tan perseverante si no practicamos y tomamos la cámara para hacer imágenes, todo es practica y no creo que alguien nazca con un don, si no con facilidades para algo.

Who are some of the clients you’ve worked with? I have had the good fortune to work with certain clients for a number of years, including: Montenbaik, Open Shimano, and AllBikers. Recently, I have shot for Nevados de Chillán, Shimano Latín América, Shimano Chile, and Volar Producciones.
¿Quienes son algunos de los clientes con los que haz trabajado? He tenido la suerte de trabajar con clientes que han perdurado en el tiempo; tales como Montenbaik, Open Shimano y AllBikers. Entre los clientes que he tenido en este último periodo puedo mencionar Nevados de Chillán, Shimano Latín América, Shimano Chile y Volar Producciones.

Is there anything else we should know about you? Not really, I hope that my interview showed who I am: a guy who likes mountain biking, the outdoors, travel, and new adventures. No la verdad, a través de la entrevista desarrollo gran parte de lo que soy, un chico que le gusta el mountainbike, la vida al aire libre, viajar y vivir nuevas aventuras.
