unReal - World Premiere Recap

It's Thursday June 18, 2015, and hundreds of pint sized mountain bikers stand in the rain, stoke undaunted by the weather, awaiting the biggest movie of the year. The lineup stretched from the front of the Vogue Theatre and curled down the block, red courtesy umbrellas punctuating the drab grey concrete surroundings. Anthill Films and Teton Gravity Research premiered their latest cinematic masterpiece, unReal, before two sold out shows and Pinkbike was on hand to document the event. The movie featured incredible riding, stunningly creative visuals, and a great soundtrack. You don't want to miss it.

bigquotesThese are concepts we've been working on for a year now and some of them were ideas we've had for even longer. You hope people appreciate what we've created. I hope people get the essential message of what we were trying to say with the movie, we want to be inclusive and get people stoked on mountain biking. We want people that already mountain bike to feel like they're part of this large culture, and we want people to realize that mountain biking is this amazing thing and you're all a part of it, and you should feel proud. For people that don't mountain bike, we want to spread the message and show people this is an amazing lifestyle and an amazing sport: if you want to give it a try your life's going to be better for it. Right now, I'm just happy to have a few beers, hang out with a few friends, and enjoy the evening. These nights don't come along very often so you just gotta soak it in while you can!

bigquotesI'm fired up! There's nothing like releasing a new film. There's been two years of intense work that's gone into this thing so this is a big night. It's not ours anymore it's the world's. We (at TGR) all bike so it's super exciting to release a bike film, I think the collaboration between the two companies has been phenomenal. We've brought together the strengths of the two companies and it's gonna be bigger, badder, and better than anything we've seen in a long time. Hopefully it inspires people to push the boundaries, to step out into the unReal world, and push themselves, and try things that have never been done before, and just experience life a little bit richer.

bigquotesFilming for unReal was pretty insane. I'm trying not to use a word that sounds like unreal, I'm looking for a synonym, all right fine I'll say it: it was unreal! All the concepts they had laid out for us seemed pretty ambitious and slightly impossible but we're here, we're at the premiere. Push came to shove and the movie is finished. All the concepts worked. Couldn't be more stoked to watch it on the big screen with all these nice loud fancy speakers. My favourite shoot was Wyoming, it was honestly my favourite shoot I've ever been on. I'm just so excited to see all the footage we got there. It's been a year since we filmed it and I didn't really watch the footage as we were filming, I was kind of trying to replicate the way we used to do it when it was only 16mm film. It's way more exciting on premiere night when you haven't seen all the footage in the field and been sent little rough cuts and edits throughout the post production process. To be able to sit in the theatre and watch something from a year ago that you were excited about at the time, and seeing it now is a pretty exciting place to be in.

bigquotesI'm stoked! I've been waiting to see it for the last six months and knowing what these guys have done in the past, it's gonna be sick. A whole lotta work went into the Whistler segment. It was crazy to see the behind the scenes stuff that went into our segment. Set up times were 2-3 hours for some shots so it was cool to see it all come together. A couple days into shooting the segment I ended up having a tumble and punctured a lung, broke some ribs, separated my shoulder, broke my scaphoid, and knocked myself out for a couple minutes. Other than that it was a good time haha.

bigquotesShooting at night was the hardest thing ever: hauling lights up the mountain, hauling lights down the mountain, generators, cords, being cold and having to ride. We were out late just filming small sections of trail so it was a lot of work to get a little bit of footage. It'll be rewarding to see. I think it's gonna be really entertaining. Anthill has been killing it around the clock and all the athletes are stoked!

bigquotesIt's been a long time in the making so it's awesome to have the movie finished and to be able to share it with the mountain bike community. It's just great to be finished and for it to be going out on tour. We've been working on it for so long and it feels good to have it out there. It's amazing to see this many people in the building!

bigquotesThe last month has been absolutely insane, the crew has been pinning it so hard and working insane hours to get this thing across the finish line. I'm really proud of everyone who's been involved with the project, it's been awesome. Hope everyone enjoys the film, we're all looking forward to sharing it with the rest of the world!

Normally I'd say "Pinkbike should sponsor Anthill so we get a free movie!" but I know the quality of Anthill films, and it's worth paying for.

I've been going to ski movie premiers for over a decade (including TGR) but this was my first mountain bike movie premier and it was awesome. It was sold out and stoke levels were sky high. Production value in the movie is top shelf with lots of novel ideas, everyone should watch it.

Man, I gotta admit I had a better experience watching Danny Macaskill's "The Ridge" and Matt Hunter's "Forgotten Dirt." There was definitely some great riding, but that was it. The best track on this movie was played on the official trailer. I'd rather hear more raw sounds of the trail and hub than the stuff they played. It might have been the venue I watched this at, but the video quality was shotty (internet stream?) and I was expecting a longer film.

Neg prop shield at the ready...send it!

Saw it in sheffield and it was pretty sick! Great riding and cinematography. Only downsides were seemed to lose its flow with too many "real world" segments and just felt way too short!
But well worth watching!

i have one question about that trek slash that can be won... why is it all a nice build kit, then they put a shitty low end fox shock on the rear???
  • 3 0
at the risk of starting some big wheel size debate...

its a DRCV, the only shock the slash 26" was ever spec'd with (and kinda the only shock you can put on a slash 26")
  • 1 2
you can spec any shock with the same eye to eye and stroke on that bike. the slash 9 at least came with a kashima shock. all the new slash frames come with a monarch plus debonair which this one should have included in my opinion
  • 1 0
I've seen a few pictures of people putting CCDB's on slash 26's, but doing so will void the warranty of the shock, and the warranty of the bike. And Trek Strongly recommends not replacing the DRCV with anything else, I've tried a lot!!
