unfortunately when you are working/doing your job, you have to answer to people who essentially tell you what to do whether you think it's best or not. That said I got to build with pavers this summer that someone else paid for and I/we got to use creative decision making within the parameters of the project. Plus this is bike park trail, one of the first on the mountain, so we are trying things to see what works and doesn't work in our terrain. Dumbing down is the name of the game when you build trails for Joey and all the other gapers who pay to ride these trails...
