I'm a naturalist and teach 5th/6th science camp in the SC mtns. I live with my wife and son near downtown SC. I try to get at least one ride in a week - if I'm lucky!

Jul 25, 2023Intense Primer carbon 29er - medium
$2600 USDLooking for a great trail/all-mountain bike? My wife recently purchased this bike just a couple of months ago, rode it 3 times and loved it, but then found her dream bike on sale at our LBS (a sparkly purple one) and promptly bought that (even though the Intense has better components!), so now here we are putting the Intense back on the market. The Intense was more bike than she needed for the type of moderate trail riding she does and the new one with less travel fits better. That said, she did report feeling very confident riding the Intense and felt strong on the ups and stable on the downs. Her height is 5'6, so on the lower end of the Intense sizing guide. This bike would comfortably fit someone who was 5'6-5'10.

Dec 23, 2022Intense Carbine 275 Small
$1400 USDTurns out kids outgrow their really nice bikes and you have to sell them. Here we have a small Intense Carbine 275 in excellent condition. My son lightly used this bike from age 12-14. The Intense sizing chart lists this size for folks 5'0-5'6. Recently overhauled and upgraged the entire drivetrain to 1x12 and put on new tires. The bike shows normal wear and tear, but we took great care of it. You'll see this to be true if you check it out in person.
X-Fusion Sweep fork, 160mm
X-Fusion shock, 150 or 135 (adjustable)
Shimano brakes
Shimano SLX cranks

78mm low rise handlebars
New Bontrager tubeless tires

Bell Super 2R Helmet - Review
Just got one of these and so far so good. It suits my usual rides up in the Santa Cruz mtns, where I'll hit a few jumps then do some moderately technical downhill. Before I would strap the full face on the water pack for the ascent, which would always rub my 7 y.o. the wrong way when I would leave - "but dada, you always make me wear mine..." Now I'm double standard free. Wife likes it for the same reason. I have a 56cm head and the medium seems to be the right fit, though as it says in the review, my ears do hit, which I'm getting used to. It does ride pretty low. I tried on a small and there was no way that would work. The chin bar is super easy to install and remove, and it fits nicely on the outside of my pack. One thing though that happened that people should watch out for: the head tensioner on the helmet I brought home was broken...I realized this when I was experimenting with the fit and pulled the helmet forward while it was on. The tensioner would just break free even with minimal pull. Everyone should try this before purchasing. Luckily my shop stood behind it and they swapped out a tensioner from another helmet and I was good to go. Overall I'm really stoked on this helmet. It is a win win and it's just right for most of the riding I do. It's not a replacement for my full face/leatt when I'm trying a new dh or jump, but it gets the thumbs up from me.

Pinkbike Poll: Protective Gear - or Not
I appreciate your post here, being a 40-something as well. I too walk the fine line between having fun riding and staying alive and kicking for my family. A lot would be at stake if I went down with something major, and it would be a big imposition on several people. Like you, I am also surrounded by younger folks in the places I like to ride and at first felt awkward with all my gear on. I realized that no one really bats an eye though and generally there is a culture of respect for those who gear up rather than down. I now ride with a sense of pride in a way, knowing that at least I'm trying to do what I can to stay safe. Multiple times now, all my stuff has come in real handy, especially the full face and my Leatt. My riding has become more cautious and I usually stick to what I know. We don't bounce back from injuries the way we used to, so might as well take preventative measures, one dorky old guy to another.
