"I’ve biked through thunder and lightning, and hailstorms and ice on the roads. Hurricane Irene is like pitch black, dark…it just makes me feel good that they can go to school and do what they want to do.

-Griffin, 9-years-old, who rode his bike to school everyday for a year in rural Vermont to bring bikes to students in rural Africa.

May is Bike Month and Griffin’s story perfectly highlights the power of bicycles both here in the United States and abroad. Griffin’s experience shows how much each one of us can do to change our world, every single day.

In Bike Month in May, communities across the United States are focusing on the benefits of bicycles- economic, health, environmental. Whether someone is bicycling to avoid urban gridlock in the U.S. or trying to reach a distant school in rural Africa, bikes provide a simple solution to some of our world’s most complex problems.

I don't know if you heard of it, but there was a big fire in valparaiso (the city where one of the urban downhill races is) and i feel like the mtb community should help these people who lost their homes, because we are guests there every year and we should help them in this hard time by donating some money.

And of course this is a great initiative!

The fire in Valparaiso was pretty f*cked up, it lasted about three days, and destroyed 2900 homes, and affected about 12500 people. If you check pictures on the internet you will find out that there was nothing left of the houses, the people who got their houses caught on fire are now with nothing but the clothes they had on the moment of the catastrophe.
As chileans we are sending food, water and clothes to the affected people. As most of you guys are from the other side of the world the best way you can help is sending money. I recommend to send it to:
"desafio levantemos Chile" www.desafiolevantemoschile.cl/levantemoschile
that means in a very rough way "challenge lift Chile", this foundation was founded on 2010 after an Earthquake and tsunami take over on the south of Chile, and it is about building houses. You will see on the link that they are also helping out the north of Chile, that recently suffered an earthquake of 8,2 in the Richter scale.
Also a good foundation is "un techo para Chile", www.techo.org/paises/chile/incendio-valparaiso that means, a roof for Chile. This foundation is about taking out camps, and building houses instead. It was born in Chile and now is present in all south america.
tl;dr: if you are sending money to help Valparaiso, send it to www.desafiolevantemoschile.cl/levantemoschile or www.techo.org/paises/chile/incendio-valparaiso since they are gonna make a good use of it.

biking is awesome because, i some weird way, it often brings out the best of people who are willing to put some blood, sweat and thears into it. I guess you can say that about a lot of sport, or commitement to sports, but biking is different because for many it has a purpose. A bike makes a positive impact on the life of people in rural africa. A kid can bike through the weather in Vermont and inspire other people to give. biking inspires the ones who like biking. hope this makes any sense. This kid is the real deal, i can wait to show this video to my daughter. wow.

Message to Griffin and Griffin's Mom: Please get lights. Blinking red for the back and white for the front. People driving to work are often sleepy and distracted -- make them see you.

Griffin -- your determination and generosity will take you far in life. Much respect.

I did notice a blinking red on the back of his helmet at the end of the clip, but your right make sure your presence is noticed. Keep up the great work others will take notice and join the cause.

If he lives in the real rural parts of VT, this might not be much of an issue. There's not much out there.

I feel extremely lazy for having driven my car to work instead of ridden my bike...

Saves money some places a bike is faster then a car.

I usually always ride my bike but I just got my first car so I've been lazy
