So this gives me an idea. DH racing with stunts, time deductions for tricks. Discuss.

isn't that sort of like crack works. its is no exactly like that but similar, its a step up from urban bmx.
  • 65 3
So like CrankWorx Speed and Style, but DH instead of DS?
  • 12 6
Yeah they do that speed and style thing..... so sort of like that, but on real DH courses. And not head to head.
  • 6 6
basically the x-games speed and style. It is really cool to watch, so I'm sure that if it was set up right the mountainbike community could make it work
  • 5 4
Beat me to it dingus, yeah, wouldnt that be a riot?
  • 20 3
So Red Bull rampage but timed?
  • 172 1
I think DH should be judged purely against the clock. The clock never lies.

However, what would be good is if one of the sponsors set aside a prize fund for best trick at each of the WC rounds.

* It would give up and coming racers who aren't getting great results an opportunity to get some media exposure and some titles/awards to their names
* It would give riders who have made a number of mistakes at the top of the run an opportunity to keep their sponsors happy
* It would make the crowd go wild (i.e. make it an even more exciting spectator sport) \o/ \o/ \o/
* CG might finally backflip the Nissan jump at Fort William (although judging by this video, he might have some competition from Greg)

And finally it would give the riders a new aim: the double. Win the race against the clock and win best trick. (e.g. Danny Hart, Champery 2011 World Champs)

@DARKSTAR63 Have you never played Downhill Domination?
  • 51 3
 1) Beauty of racing is that it's pure and clear. No judges, no question just time! Don't ruin it!
2) Combination of super speed and tricks would be extremely dangerous! Big tricks need right speed, timing and preparation. When you rush it, you wake up in the hospital!
3) DH racers are very busy whole season. So it couldn't be a cup, but maybe one event. Event called Rampage! Gee showed us...! And that puts me back to the point 1) - We all know that Norbs got robbed!
  • 11 2
I don't think pro DH riders would risk injury throwing tricks which could ruin their season. But maybe some of the smaller names would!

4X on a dh course, so 4 at a time on a world cup track, like skier cross, jostling each other is allowed, and on the motor way section at the bottom of most courses, each person is judged on tricks. OR each jump is for a designated trick. everyone has to whip one jump, flip one, and super man another.
  • 4 2
@ Spoonyman, I don't actually suggest we replace DH racing with this, just joking around- but I think it would be cool to watch as a novelty. Obviously there are some DH racer's who would rather not participate in such an event. But there are a lot of DH racers with style and skills we don't get to see the full scope of!

@ shredder-boy - YES! for hours on end I have played that game. Such a classic.

@ ZAP - Norbs got robbed.
  • 5 3
@slanham - "I don't think pro DH riders would risk injury throwing tricks which could ruin their season"

* Cedric Gracia
* Brendan Fairclough (whips, 1-foot NacNacs and shit loads of Dirt Jumping in between races)
* Every rider that has ever whipped the tail out for the crowd (e.g. Danny Hart - could have thrown away one of the best World Champs runs ever by whipping that last jump)

time deductions in world cup races for tricks... awesome! but if they start timing fmb events i will be pissed.
world cup: 85%speed 15%tricks
FMB: 100%tricks 0%race
  • 4 1
Four riders trying to trick a jump at the same time? That sounds like a very bad result to be honest.
  • 7 0
Greg said," if Aggy can do it, i can do it," and so he did.
  • 4 0
Spoonyman if you have rode Nissan jump on the fort William wc track you would know that it would be nigh on impossible to backflip it. Also i think Slanham ment as in whilst racing. Pretty sure not very many top class WC racers wont be throwing down superman's or huge 3 tucks on the motorway section of fort william any time soon.
  • 6 0
A second off for every 10 degrees past a 90 degree whip!
  • 10 1
And everyone has to ride a Hyper Zink!
  • 1 4
Pretty mich no one can whip 100 degrees on a bike...
  • 1 1
@mnorris122 Tyler McCaul at Whip off worlds, it can happen!
  • 13 1
Turn Bar! 10 points to Gryffindor
  • 2 5
This would just destroy the purity of racing.
  • 5 4
It's called DH RACING for a reason, leave all the trickery for dirtjump and slopestyle.

One high level racer does a backflip (which was awesome by the way) and a big discussion kicks up about altering downhill racing which has pretty much just been against the clock since it began...

And i reckon it would be alot harder for the racers to backflip one of the tables at fort william when there doing 60+kph and not riding a jump what is designed for freestyle/dirt jumping

Idiots
  • 4 1
@conorjm, did you even read the first comment?
  • 4 1
Yeah conorjm, read all the comments before posting something like that. Nobody suggested altering DH racing. Just talking in good fun, lighten up!!
  • 7 0
I like how he ended his comment with "Idiots".

Ironic.
  • 1 3
All my top comments are suggesting putting tricks in DH racing so no.... In answer to your question i didnt see the comments above...
  • 39 1
That O'neil girl must have done wonders to him!
  • 2 1
Next to dialed suspension and a tricked out frame, every racer needs arm candy.
  • 21 0
Always cool to see DH racers trying the stunts out. Makes me stoked 10 times out of 10
  • 14 1
60% of the time... It gets you stoked every time?
  • 7 0
....and that is a scientific fact!!!
  • 1 1
for some reason i never get tired of it lol. If it will make you feel better hows 9 out of 10
  • 5 0
 11 out of 10.

mind = blown
  • 2 0
its like backflip has no big deal to Mr.Greg ...what a boss! ... World DH top10 or top20 racer always has something in their pockets..
  • 1 2
out of curiosity can anyone tell if hes clipped in?
  • 1 1
sure he is. changing pedals and shoes to flats would just be to much work
  • 21 0
I can't wait to see this new season makes me so happy Smile

I took a shot in the dark.. I forgot which one it was, ha.. Thanks for clearing it up...
  • 1 1
 Lol at his nipples Razz
  • 8 0
I don't think this counts as one of the UCI downhill races. Based on the recent article, I am pretty sure this will be banned soon too.
  • 4 0
Greg - seriously can you get any better? You have to be one of the fastest riders on the planet , and now you have to throw down tricks to rub it in??? I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy!
  • 3 0
he just followed these instructions i think...

This is Gee's backflip - looks fake - no landing too little off the ground:

Looks like it's the same location. Probably fox-suspension-testing.
  • 2 0
in one of the atherton episodes gee flips his xc bike clipped in, seat up, onto an airbag so im sure he could pull one if he wanted to...
  • 5 0
he just does everything on his v10. I think he'd enter an xc race on it.
  • 1 1
Hmm...I'm all for progression and supporting each other, but I fail to see why we are so stoked (and posting to PBs front page) for a guy who has been riding pro for a decade and just got around to sticking a backflip. It's like airing a Special Edition Sportscenter episode for Lebron James making his first free throw...and yes I know Minnaar is a DH guy...
  • 1 1
ehmmm...when i've seen double tabletop on Kona operator in "going big with Brad" i've thought: f*ck u! its impossible...wtf how he's made it!? so i was shocked....now: F*CK U! DAMN HOW?! 200\216 backflip?! Aaaaallriiiiight...i'm out of mtb! Cheers Big Grin
  • 1 1
 Mmm indeed.
  • 4 0
well that was one of the cleanest backies on a dh bike ive seen
  • 2 0
I saw a pic of Gee flipping the other day as well, Was this real and anyone have any footage of that?
  • 3 0
 Love chris king hub sound!
  • 2 0
We should just replace the word smooth with the word Minnaar. He probably makes no sound when he walks.
  • 2 0
He doesn't make a sound walking...even on gravel. I will try to get video documentary for the non-believers.
  • 4 4
It's funny how there are thousands of amateur videos of people doing far more impressive backflips but the second greg minnar does one it makes the front page on pinkbike and is faved by 150 people
  • 3 1
 dick
  • 2 1
thing about greg minnaar doing a flip is that he's a world class downhill racer. the fact that he can do a trick is awesome. the fact that he can backflip is amazing.
  • 1 1
if he is a world class dh racer you shouldn't be surprised that he can do a flip...no hate on greg...he's actually one of my favorite riders
  • 2 0
It would be interesting to see him on rampage.. but i am afraid uci won't give a green light to him.
  • 7 5
is he riding a trek session?
  • 10 5
 Cam Zink's Hyper
  • 3 2
 It's a v10c
  • 5 0
@bigtim... I think you missed the joke there... I'll help you out: "Looks like a session."
  • 1 1
wow he fliped, now go watch the 10,000 other videos of people fliping 60 foot gaps on long travel bikes.................. i dont see whats so special
  • 2 0
This shit is just getting crazier!
  • 3 1
nice reminds me of squid going wild www.pinkbike.com/video/209755
  • 2 0
 even his backflips are smoth
  • 2 3
 Hm, something's wrong here xD
Why is it that crazy when a Pro-Rider, a Wolrducp racer, which spent his whole life on a bike? It's 90 times more interesting when a noob gets his first one gets landed..
  • 1 0
He may have spent his whole life on a bike, but flipping a bike like that isn't something everyone who's ridden a bike for a long time can do. He focuses on training and racing. Not hucking those big DH bikes and doing flips with them. It's cool to see someone who is a World Champ several times over with a great racing resume, who never does stuff like this, do it.
  • 1 0
If he flips in a downhill run, I will buy a Santa Cruz v10!
(would be so sick)
  • 1 0
few people can backflip, even fewer can win world cup downhill races. minaar can do both. i quit lol
  • 1 0
I broke my DH bike trying to do a back flip on it. very good job!
  • 1 0
I love it very very nice !!!
  • 1 0
Oh my heart a Backflip! Hulk Hogan eat your heart out!
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
Big deal. The lacondeguy did this in a race
  • 1 0
well now i know a v10 can do back flips
  • 1 0
