basically the x-games speed and style. It is really cool to watch, so I'm sure that if it was set up right the mountainbike community could make it work
I think DH should be judged purely against the clock. The clock never lies.
However, what would be good is if one of the sponsors set aside a prize fund for best trick at each of the WC rounds.
* It would give up and coming racers who aren't getting great results an opportunity to get some media exposure and some titles/awards to their names * It would give riders who have made a number of mistakes at the top of the run an opportunity to keep their sponsors happy * It would make the crowd go wild (i.e. make it an even more exciting spectator sport) \o/ \o/ \o/ * CG might finally backflip the Nissan jump at Fort William (although judging by this video, he might have some competition from Greg)
And finally it would give the riders a new aim: the double. Win the race against the clock and win best trick. (e.g. Danny Hart, Champery 2011 World Champs)
1) Beauty of racing is that it's pure and clear. No judges, no question just time! Don't ruin it! 2) Combination of super speed and tricks would be extremely dangerous! Big tricks need right speed, timing and preparation. When you rush it, you wake up in the hospital! 3) DH racers are very busy whole season. So it couldn't be a cup, but maybe one event. Event called Rampage! Gee showed us...! And that puts me back to the point 1) - We all know that Norbs got robbed!
4X on a dh course, so 4 at a time on a world cup track, like skier cross, jostling each other is allowed, and on the motor way section at the bottom of most courses, each person is judged on tricks. OR each jump is for a designated trick. everyone has to whip one jump, flip one, and super man another.
@ Spoonyman, I don't actually suggest we replace DH racing with this, just joking around- but I think it would be cool to watch as a novelty. Obviously there are some DH racer's who would rather not participate in such an event. But there are a lot of DH racers with style and skills we don't get to see the full scope of!
@ shredder-boy - YES! for hours on end I have played that game. Such a classic.
@slanham - "I don't think pro DH riders would risk injury throwing tricks which could ruin their season"
* Cedric Gracia * Brendan Fairclough (whips, 1-foot NacNacs and shit loads of Dirt Jumping in between races) * Every rider that has ever whipped the tail out for the crowd (e.g. Danny Hart - could have thrown away one of the best World Champs runs ever by whipping that last jump)
time deductions in world cup races for tricks... awesome! but if they start timing fmb events i will be pissed. world cup: 85%speed 15%tricks FMB: 100%tricks 0%race
Spoonyman if you have rode Nissan jump on the fort William wc track you would know that it would be nigh on impossible to backflip it. Also i think Slanham ment as in whilst racing. Pretty sure not very many top class WC racers wont be throwing down superman's or huge 3 tucks on the motorway section of fort william any time soon.
One high level racer does a backflip (which was awesome by the way) and a big discussion kicks up about altering downhill racing which has pretty much just been against the clock since it began...
And i reckon it would be alot harder for the racers to backflip one of the tables at fort william when there doing 60+kph and not riding a jump what is designed for freestyle/dirt jumping
Greg - seriously can you get any better? You have to be one of the fastest riders on the planet , and now you have to throw down tricks to rub it in??? I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy!
Hmm...I'm all for progression and supporting each other, but I fail to see why we are so stoked (and posting to PBs front page) for a guy who has been riding pro for a decade and just got around to sticking a backflip. It's like airing a Special Edition Sportscenter episode for Lebron James making his first free throw...and yes I know Minnaar is a DH guy...
ehmmm...when i've seen double tabletop on Kona operator in "going big with Brad" i've thought: f*ck u! its impossible...wtf how he's made it!? so i was shocked....now: F*CK U! DAMN HOW?! 200\216 backflip?! Aaaaallriiiiight...i'm out of mtb! Cheers
It's funny how there are thousands of amateur videos of people doing far more impressive backflips but the second greg minnar does one it makes the front page on pinkbike and is faved by 150 people
thing about greg minnaar doing a flip is that he's a world class downhill racer. the fact that he can do a trick is awesome. the fact that he can backflip is amazing.
Hm, something's wrong here xD Why is it that crazy when a Pro-Rider, a Wolrducp racer, which spent his whole life on a bike? It's 90 times more interesting when a noob gets his first one gets landed..
He may have spent his whole life on a bike, but flipping a bike like that isn't something everyone who's ridden a bike for a long time can do. He focuses on training and racing. Not hucking those big DH bikes and doing flips with them. It's cool to see someone who is a World Champ several times over with a great racing resume, who never does stuff like this, do it.
