LPS From Town

The wintertime in Colorado is magical: Backcountry skis with the dog in the woods, Ice Climbing, Lots of spinning on the trainer... BUT the time before and after winter, the mud seasons, have their own feel. It is during these seasons, the early spring and late fall, when Colorados highcountry isn't rideable, that I like to hit Moab.

Moab is a paradise for all kinds of riders, I enjoy just about every aspect of Moab. I had heard about a ride from town, LPS to porcupine rim.LPS, lower porcupine single, is technical and fun.

I rode up Sand Flats road from town, past slickrock, past porcupine rim trailhead. After Porc Rim trailhead things get steeper. Its about 3K of climbing to the signletrack. Two feet below the cattleguard at the BLM Boundary, on the North side of Sand Flats Road, is the unmarked entrance to LPS. Its easy to go right (NE) and head UP UPS into Hazard County, I was on my way when a nice rider turned me around.

The trail demands power, even on the downhill, as you pump, jump and manual around. LOTS of opportunities to practice drops, the drops are easy and the landings are easier. I definately recommend lots of 'safety' meetings, not just for the view but also to recover. If I could do it again, I'd rest more and ride a bit crispier. I was in a bit of a hurry to get back to the Family in Camp. Bring Lots of water, PB&Js, FULL trail tool kit. Hit me up if you want more info, GPS maps, whatever. A picture of the ride is in Favorite Rides. WAY more satisfying than just riding up to the normal trailhead with the cattle. When you earn it, it is much sweeter. Earn ya bowls bro!
