An event that started life with just a handful of riders, in a little known mountain biking destination, has, over 8 years, grown into a series of mountain bike races worldwide with title sponsors such as The NorthFace and Sri Lanka Airlines. The YakAttack, born in 2007, was the first international MTB race to hit Nepal, and to this day still holds the title of the highest mountain bike race on Earth.
The concept was not only to provide a platform where adventurous mountain bikers could test themselves against one of the world’s toughest terrains and climates, but also to showcase the amazing abundance of trails that made Nepal a mountain biker’s paradise.
The first ever YakAttack starting line up saw just 6 Nepali and 3 international riders, not the biggest field ever, but, unknown at the time, it was the start of something much bigger.
Today, Nepal has a plethora of companies offering mountain bike tours in every corner of the rugged yet beautiful country and a small but dedicated group of Nepali riders, headed by Ajay Pandit Chhetri, have made their names on the international mountain bike scene, with 4 riders competing at the World marathon champs in South Africa in 2014.
The race itself has also grown steadily in stature over the years. Cited by many mountain bike publications as one of the top 10 “
to do” races, the event not only annually attracts a handful of pro riders, vying to be first non Nepali to ever win the race, but also a growing army of adventure driven enthusiasts wanting to do battle with the extremes of mother nature.
With the success of the original race, the YakAttack team have drawn on the experience gained over the last 8 years to recently expand their portfolio, also now offering races in Sri Lanka and Patagonia, together with a range of mountain bike tours for those riders without the competitive streak.
AlpacAttack which commences for the very first time from April 13th, is a 6 day mountain bike race through the volcanic landscape of Patagonia, whilst Rumble in the Jungle, already in its second year, gives intrepid riders the opportunity to safely race through the jungles and mountain of the tropical island paradise, Sri Lanka, from June 9th 2015.
The YakAttack Adventures subsidiary, launched in January, offers year round top end mountain bike tours of the YakAttack series race routes. These adventures are aimed for those who are serious about their mountain biking but lack that competitive edge. The tours in Nepal are led by the Nepali national mountain bike champion and all are supported by Torqfitness nutritional products throughout the duration.
