Epic Crash: Don't Always Follow Your Friends

Sep 29, 2013 at 9:01
by Thomas Bidwell
It's nice to follow someone into a new feature, but it's not so good when the guy in front gets it that badly wrong.

Luckily they were all okay.

And the builder is sitting right there, in a foldable chair eating popcorn, watching.
  • 116 32
The builder needs to be fired ASAP.
  • 95 5
He's just checking to see where they land, so he can build a foam pit!
  • 45 8
At least the builders are there unlike north star.
  • 13 1
I thought he was going to crash at the first drop!

I hope that you are sarcastic. Otherwise with all my respect your comment is pretty damn stupid. Since when you go full speed hit a "drop" or any stunt or trail without knowing what's coming? I guess you are like them but this is not disney land! Come ride in BC (or anywhere) and do like these (lucky) dummies you'll finish your day at the hospital or worse. Would you expect signs like drop, gap, turn, slowdown, watch out, pedal, pedal a bit more, you should pop that one... Come on! This is mountain biking not granpa walk in the park, figure the shit out yourself!
We often hear that speech from some people in the USA: "be responsible for yourself...". But at the same time they are sueing you for everything/anything, often because they dont have a dime of common sense, just like these guys showed us. Ride smart, ride hard but dont blame others for being irresponsible!
  • 65 29
What a bunch of thoughtless pricks , did they not check out the trail before deciding to leap ?

Twats like them get trails shut down....

And how is this the fault of the builder ?he has no control over the lack of intelligence of the people who ride his trails
  • 43 5
Agreed, I know people that have ridden this trail and they all said "yeah, bit of a sketchy corner, but we didn't do that!".

These guys are morons for riding down a trail like that flat out and completely blind. This was entirely their own fault.
If you're going to ride a trail with big features for the first time, you stop and take a look, or at least not ride so fast that you can't stop in the space that you can see ahead of you, otherwise shit like this happens. And yes, it is morons like this that get trails closed, no fault of the builders. Most of the guys that dig around the PDS don't get paid for it, so don't go blaming the builders. If you can't ride it, DON'T ride it.

and aside from that, it's f*cking hilarious

english is not my first language, so excuse me because probably I made a lot of mistakes.
@dirtworks911 here is what they said
1:20 to 1:34 ->the guy complainig the most: "oh my ankle, oh my ankle, I sprained my ankle"
1:34 -> guy in four: "we got out of this one pretty good didnt we?"
1:34 to 1:40 -> to the guy on the floor:" stay still", guy on the floor "my ankle, my ankle"
1:40 to 1:53 ->guy standing " how comes there is no sign? I just was going straight" guy on the back " I just was following this f*cker"
1:53 to 1:59 -> more ankle complaining
2:19-> guy on screen "thanks god, thanks god"
2:23 -> same guy " we have flyed all of this"
2:38-> other guy "we jumped de handrail ! "
2:44->cameraman "when we jumped the handrail I though: here is something strange"
2:50->stoked guy " look all what we jumped man! come here to see f*ckers ( to the guys on the "landing")"
2:28->cameraman " we flyed to there, what rampage? what rampage?"
3:16->"how is your wheel going? show us! is a new wheel, is a new wheel"
  • 36 2
They're weren't too wise for not scouting beforehand that's for sure but to play devil's advocate, that first drop looked pretty big and the terrain afterward was fast rolling, pretty sure they anticipated other features as big as the first one so they needed to carry good speed. All that could have been solved by a slowdown/danger sign nailed on a tree if there wasn't any.
  • 5 2
granted the trail may have been a little misleading, but in places like these, the trails aren't perfectly built, and everyone knows this. To just hammer it down a trail like this without any idea of what is coming up (a jump/drop could have been closed for maintenance, etc) is just stupid. The PDS region is known for not having the best maintained trails, so you do have to be a little careful. Seems to me like these guys were just trying to show off how badass they are by riding it blind...
  • 19 1
I can see both sides of this. Ultimately it is the responsibility if the rider to check out what he is riding. But at the same time this is a legitimate bike park right? Not some rider built trails. I think there is a responsibility on their part to mark out thier trails realizing that the place will attract non locals who aren't familiar with the terrain. My local bike park always has signs up when approaching drops, high speed trail merged, etc along with the normal black blue and green trail ratings. I think at a bike park it's not an unreasonable expectation to expect a sign or warning in a sketchy spot. People pay money to visit these places and don't want to spend half their time walking the trails inspecting them.
  • 2 0
Yeah, you don't get that really in the PDS, but I've been out there a couple of times now and it's never been an issue to me. I think they get away with it because it's the easiest place for most people in the UK/europe to get to, so we don't know any better. At the same time, it has a lot of rider traffic and i think they spend a lot of time just digging out braking bumps!
  • 7 8
Hmm those guys don't sound like they're from USA, not everyone here sucks

did anyone else notice that there was a wadded up bike already on ground before 1st guy landed?
  • 4 2
Yup.. looked likes a "fail" in design. Great "looking" trail. But that corner, with the perceived jump at the top, was way to fast for a safe brake on boards for a quick turn down... You have to put some faith in the trail designers... I think even if the first guy had nav'ed it OK someone was bound to launch.
  • 3 0
Whats not clear from the vid is the wood that they jumped off is actually a swing bridge and moves underneath you. Dumb mutha fukkaz!! Hilarious slo-mo.

If this is on a resort, I say it should be marked from a courtesy standpoint. They trail builders are irresponsible for building it like that. However, we all should ride as if we are going to bear any costs imposed from mistakes, because we will. Why can't both sides be smarter next time?
  • 8 0
You missed the last one, JoseBravo: "You're gonna need a wider fork."
  • 6 0
And that all the bikes landed in the exact same spot! Loved this video,so funny. Dude even crossed up on the way down lol. Oh and when I go bald I'm gonna grow my hair like krusty the camera man ha ha ha
  • 4 0
Well to be honest I probably would have done the same, it really does look like a sweet run-in for a ladder drop, not a turn down.
At least he managed to get a little tweak in before he bought the farm lol
  • 2 0
Same here, that looks like the 'line'. It just looks like a run in for a drop or jump.

In honesty, if it was planned you could easily make that, it's not huge, but it's not easy to tel if the 'landing' was sloped much. They were lucky really the were going as fast as they were, a little slower and they would have hooked up on the hand rail (why is there a hand rail) and that would have been real bad...
  • 5 0
Did the track many times - they re just blind to not see the track on the left... It is so easy to yell about shapers, but they re so stupid to jump without reco...
  • 3 0
If they were going slightly slower the wouldve piled straight into the fence
  • 3 3
people said the builder is sat at the bottom, well if you look at the slo mo you'll see his bike (yellow something) on the floor too so i guess he crashed aswell
  • 4 2
@elanto how do you know that was the builder? "people said" that means nothing
  • 2 0
He doesn't. Nobody on this earth is stupid enough to do that on a trail that they built themselves.
  • 2 2
I was one comment guys, don't think I am stupid because of it. To sylwhistler: Yes I was sarcastic. Obviously, as there is no such thing I said in the video. Learn to appreciate jokes instead. I am a DH racer, I assure you that I don't ride like that. And people! Get to know the person before judging him or her by one funny comment!
  • 2 0
im saying it was not the builder, its some other poor fella thats came off too
  • 1 0
Yeah it's a weird design but, they signed the agreement to look before you leap, it's their own fault.
  • 4 0
regardless there still should be a big warning sign because that was just a flat out straight into a drop turn...
  • 1 0
That's a blind turn, to be honest I probably would have done the same...
  • 3 3
I hope nobody truly thinks that you should have to scout out a legal legitimate bike park DH trail. The whole point of a bike park is for it to be fun, safe, and easy to navigate, and most of all, not something that you need to hike and scope. Definitely a weird section of the trail... Just gotta be cautious on stuff you've never ridden before.
  • 2 0
you can do 80% of the bikepark without scooting, but it s one of the most diffucult track of chatel, knows to be the hardest place to ride in the alps.....
  • 3 0
I'm not saying hike it before you ride it, but on a trail with big shit like that on it, don't just ride down full pelt because you don't know what's coming and stupid shit like that happens. Just have a degree of common sense and ride down a little slower and stop and take a look if you can't see what's coming. jesus christ, does anybody have any common sense these days?
  • 2 0
We still don't exactly know how this went down. Especially when people ride in a train in uncommon ground they use to ride more risky and maybe the first guy got it all wrong and the problem is that from behind and above it just looks like the second guy in front of the cameraman drops off just fine prividing the setting for an unlucky chainreaction. I'm very cautios because I can't remember tracks well and often double check but I won't lie and say that I never ever misinterpreted an obstacle or jump in either way. Sometimes it just happens after a long day of riding and you're lucky to get out unhurt and the mistake is not as big as theirs.

It is a bike park, but it is in France...they have no concept of health and safety and believe very firmly in survival of the fittest/luckiest!

If you are so bad at reading a trail that you need left and right turn signs then you should f*ck off and leave the sport for people with at least a shred of common sense....

Dunno about you but I love th buzz of going down a trail for the 1st time , following your nose , reacting to the terrain as it comes at you , such a great feeling.

Maybe they should put traffic lights and lollypop ladies at the trail crossings , and maybe your mother can be there to tell you to be carefull?
  • 6 1
there just needed to be a high railing around the outside of the turn. Its not rocket science.

when i read some comments i think : "ok, freeride is dead, they want to rule my mountain, fking tourists, "
  • 2 1
Your mountain wouldn't exist without tourists genius.
  • 1 0
ParkCityPlush. The mountains would exist without anyone. . Wink
  • 1 0
But without the lifts, bike park, trails, accommodations, restaurants, etc. and then you would have to hike a bike up. That's what I meant. And god knows you can't pedal a bike uphill unless its a XC bike.
  • 3 0
I've only ever had the privilege of using lifts for a week in the Alps last year. Doesn't stop me having fun going downhill, and it's just too demoralising to walk up, I ride my firebird everywhere: xc, downhill, singletrack. Only walk if it gets too steep or I'm too weak.

Nothing like finding a great bit of trail off the beaten track that hasn't been manicured into a flow-fest; few people know it exists and leaves you with a massive buzz.

Get rid of all that other crap too? Ideal. If we can just keep some of the trails, and place to pitch my tent. Sounds perfect.
  • 2 0
What i mean is when i look back 15 years ago, the few riders in the alps were so happy enjoying big mountains during summer... Now, people can never get enough, but they don t realise how lucky they are to be there riding high quality trails and shore... This summer, on the lift waiting line, i saw more customers than guy who belong to the freerider family. The same guy who don t care about to stop when someone is flat in the middle of nowhere or when a other rider is down... Messing around and yelling about shapers when they miss a landing... Hey i ve been stupid, but there is no sign saying it s forbidden to do so....
  • 1 0
^^^ exactly.. Locals don't bring a whole lot of money to resorts. It's mostly the tourism. Back when I was young and dumb in Colorado we used to bitch about locals at the ski hill, but then we grew up and realized they were the ones bringing most of the money to the whole town. It sure wasn't us living in rv's, surviving on happy hour specials, drinking pabst and sneaking on the lifts without tickets.. We sure thought we were bad ass "locals" though.
Tourists can be annoying but I am not going to be rude to someone just cause they want to have fun on "my" mountain.
  • 1 0
Regarding the sign. It appears there is one, but looking closely at the video it would be poorly positioned, and I think dont see an arrow, I just see a "3".
  • 1 0
But you do see the wood work dropping to the left for quite a while , kinda stands out like a sore thumb ., most people would of seen that and backed off as its quite likely to be the route rather than a blind leap into a field with no trail in the fore ground.
  • 56 0

  • 33 5
I don't think the guys were unsafe riders. Is unrealistic to walk a bike park trail first. You'd be putting other riders at risk. I thought they hit the correct line based off of the lack of sinage. Seriously, who knew?!?!
  • 8 2
 There is a sign
  • 10 3
You don't need to walk a trail to figure it out , just back off or stop if you see the land disappear in front of you, you can allways do another run.
  • 6 2
You are completely right dynamatt! It's completely unrealistic to expect them to walk it before hand.

And a lot of people that are familiar with certain trails will ride them in pretty committed fashion. How then would it be safe to have some guy come around a corner at warp speed and there is some bloke walking or riding so slowly that there is a near accident?
  • 7 2
There are some crashes like you just described that are unavoidable. But to huck off something blindly when you have no idea what the landing is like? Eventually natural selection might catch up with you if that is always your approach when riding a new trail and you also ignore the signs. Funny though.

I'm getting to the point where I have little Interest in riding any wood features anymore, must be getting old... Just give me dirt and rocks.
  • 9 1
There is actually a balance here Protour that you are failing or refusing to see. Blitzing things at speed that you haven't see is dumb, but a sign does go along way to also solve the issue that Dynamatt eluded too.

This could just as easily have been a video where some dumb a$$ walking the course was just on the other side of some blind corner or feature gets hit by a train of guys that are very familiar and blasting along like they do all the time.

Bike parks are notorious for bozo's stopping in the middle of or not quite off trails and thinking nothing of the danger they are creating. And don't tell me you haven't seen it. Some guy there on a rental bike with all that awkward rental armor looking like some crude and blocky power ranger that comes to a dead stop right in the middle of the trail because after all, nobody matters but him.

No! Give us a sign and stern warnings for a$$hole$ to not stop on the courses.
  • 4 2
I actually agreed with what you said for the most part, what is the balance I'm refusing to see? Did you also fail to see the turn sign?
  • 3 0
I saw what looks like a black diamond with a 3 printed on it.

Looks like a pretty obvious left to me Razz
  • 2 0
Yeah... To me too. But when your buddy just went off it straight, you might also think there is a Y junction of some sort.

And who wants to get split up anyway?

Lastly, if you just blasted up on this at a good clip and you're not following someone, it might not be that easy to get slowed
down to make that turn.

But oh well....
  • 3 2
Dunno what is on the other side = back off or stop , thats basic self preservation , and I would of thought common sense , maybe it ain't as common as I thought.

Reminds me of the piss poor examples your parents would give when you are a kid and copy your mates " and if they jumped off a cliff would you ? " turns out these guys did and didn't get that lecture when growing up.
  • 2 1
Surely you could youtube search the trail first? Gopro footage of everything these days, probably what I would do before going to a bike park anyways. No excuse for hitting stuff like that blind. Glad everyone was ok, was pretty funny!
  • 4 0
Yeah, it's still funny as hell. I've watched it like 100 times today.
  • 2 1
There is NO turn sign. I have played this back pausing over and over and all I see is one tiny black sign with a 3 written on it (!?) hidden between 2 trees that is visible barely, just as you pass it.. No one would see it and even if they did, it would be useless at the distance from the turn.. Oh then there's the small matter of, what the f*ck does a 3 mean on a sign anyway!

The only (slight) giveaway is the fact that you can see the wooden ladder bending down to the right through the trees, BUT, I only noticed that on the 5th play through whilst pausing constantly!
  • 5 0
Maybe in France "Black Diamond 3" equals "Jesus guys, you better slow down there's a blind 180 degree corner with a gnarly handrail."
Watching this for the very first time my focus was on the rider in front, and the fast lead-in for this bridge really, really felt like a build up for a ladder drop. A little yellow/red warning sign would have cued me in. A black diamond really just tells me "this upcoming drop is rated black for advanced riders only". I did catch the bridge hanging to the left but I assumed it was simply a connecting trail. Kind of mean to blame just the riders, I think most here going this fast would have done exactly the same. Seemed like a pretty honest mistake.
  • 22 2
Come on you US and CAN guys grumbling about bad building skills of french builders...

How many of you have ever ridden this trail???
Chatel is in some ways way harder than polished whistler motorways and lot of skilled riders like it that way.
Take look on shore. Im not sure about signs in every turn.

Going more than full speed on a first run, moreover riding trail in a full speed and in a train, is a dumb way to read the track.
But this vid is epic, good that everyone seems relatively ok after this...
  • 4 1
well, first, my guess is you have never ripped Whistler or the Shore here; Whistler has some trails in and outside the park that are anything but 'polished motorways' - as for North Shore signage, yep not much, but anyone with a clue and skill, not just testosterone, does not rip the shore full tilt without some degree of common sense sessioning - and i don't think anyone is dissing french builders [ plural ] just this trail builder [ No good trail builder assumes 'skilled' riders don't want or need signage ] i recently ripped a trail in Squamish called Angry Midget that i had never done before and it was steep with deep pockets, roots, crazy twist and was super dry and dusty slippery - i am an Intermediate / Black D and i was going down at moderate speed which was more than safe but i suddenly found myself approaching a turn and could see a short skinny with an obvious but simple looking 5 foot drop, anyway, decided to slow down and check it out and so glad i did ! Not even a pro would have landed that one at anything more than slow approach - the landing was super steep sandy and dry and immediately went into a crazy berm that if you slipped [ which most skill levels going fast here would have ] and missed could have ended your bike riding for good...my point is obvious but just to be clear: Trail builders of any worth recognize the value of signage especially on an advanced trail, and the days of trails that came about haphazardly old school on the shore are pretty much over due to serious injuries and even death [ we had one [ again ] on the Shore recently ] even with signage injuries can occur, but personally, i value this body far more than any need to be an adrenaline freak to the point where i trust my skills over common sense - to each their own and yep, we do agree a train of riders on a trail unsessioned is dumb [ like lemmings following blindly the lead lemming ] also agree glad no one was seriously injured .
  • 3 1
 ... not guessing right ...
  • 1 0
well if that's the case then you know Whistler has oodles of 'unpolished' trails : Too Tight / Duffmans / Upper Joyride and more, as well as those outside the park - may be i am just defending an implied suggestion Whistler is for pussy's or too groomed, but regardless, one can get hurt on any trail polished or not, and i suppose the real issue here [ for me ] is the trail in this vid is NOT marked in a way that allows one to rip it without ripping their head off at a spot that needs it...i actually think those riders made a mistake based on what almost anyone would have assumed skilled or not so skilled : the trail just before that blind left rooty rocky gives anyone who has ever ridden pro built trails a green light for speed buildup and definitely not for what those guys blew over !
Anyway...that's my take. happy Trails. ps. i have been to the Czech Republic in the mountains - nearest city was called Strilky i believe - never found any trails there, but i am sure their are plenty .
  • 1 0
Too tight is my favourite well polished skinny trail where you could easily feel the speed, still well polishedSmile
Anyway i have really heard that Whistler is for for pussies, shore guys told me Smile )))

You should put Chatel on your bucket list and give the "black shore" try.

See you on a bike... Anywhere...
  • 18 0
So here's what you do to get the positive out of the situation. See this, make an actual landing so it become a legitimate hit, then make it loop back into the trail Salute problem solved!

I completely agree, it looked sweet. The bushes were already mashed out, these guys were obviously not the first to do this.

Hello people, i am the guy that crash first and I want to tell how the story was for me:

Two friends, that knew the track, tell us that werent others huge jump from that point and we where very exiciting ,VERY!. I was going very fast and when i saw the "Bridge" (Looked pretty solid to me, like a gap) in the middle of trees, I thought, easy gap for sure ,because the track didnt have many difficult jumps and obviously bad choice jumping with looking first, so in the air the only thing that i thought was "Could I be more stupid? In what bike park of the world exist a bridge-jump? Could I be more stupid (again), You never jump with out knowing, why now? So i get prepared to fall , I hit very hard in my stomacke so I couldnt shout loud to the others to slow down, after my friend Sebastian flying followed by Javier, 3 seconds latter the craziest of the team, Benjamin, appaer pedaling in the air with out touching any tree. Benjamin broke his helmet with the impact, Seba his wheel as you can see, Javier nothing and I was peeing blood for one week but fine!.

And that is the story dear people that love bikes! (Sorry for the english)

PS: I am a great racer looking for sponsor for the world cup, I train every day for it and work hard trying to get money for races.
P.S.S: I learned the lesson jajaja

  • 13 0
once enough people crash there the landing will be packed and it will be good to go

I just laughed so hard I peed a little. Seriously. Mondays don't suck when you can watch crazy stuff like this. I can't stop chuckling.

Who cares if it was dumb? Who cares about the signage, the builders, the riders? It was hysterical; they dropped in blind and landed in a pile like lemmings off a cliff... PLEASE tell me that's not insanely funny. Whether anyone likes to admit it or not, we've all done dumb shit on our bikes. Sometimes we luck out and it ends really well and sometimes, you end up in a doggy pile with your buddies. That's what makes riding with friends the most fun -- you never really know what's going to happen. Smile

Lets be real this is a signage issue. Nobody is going to walk an entire mountain. If you did you would never ride you would be a hiker. That's a blind turn with no ropes or signs. They can't be the first or the last to do this.
  • 3 3
watch the vid again you can see the trail drops to the left
  • 2 2
There is a sign with left turn...
  • 2 0
yeah i saw the trail dropping to the left after a few times, however there are many trails that split to avoid a drop etc. just think it could have been roped off better
  • 1 0
You said it though, you see the ladder left AFTER watching it a few times, riding there you only get one first time to see that... which you won't..
  • 10 2
I am sorry to say but this has been bugging me after seeing this on several sites now, this is an expert trail marked expert on the entrance and has been in chatel for years, I have ridden the trail its not a fast trail is all tech riding, which snakes across a gully back and forth, the first drop is about 6-8ft max and about 6ft-8ft out, you can clearly see the trail turns LEFT at the end of the bridge just before the camera rider enters the bridge! To clear the handrail that stops you from going down the bank onto the ski slope they land on! You would have to be really going some I MEAN really going some, I am not saying that it didn't happen in the way being made out on the web, however the is more and more I think about it the more it starts to look like a set up vid. I just can’t understand how you would make this mistake, first time down the trail or not.
  • 6 0
As soon as I saw the video I thought it was an epic set-up. Still kinda do. This is a great trail and I really can't imagine sending it where they did. I'm sure many of us who know the trail cringed when we saw how fast they were coming into that little left-hander. This is one of the 'big feature' trails at Chatel and you just wouldn't ride it at pace before scoping it out. A lot of dudes even session the sections before doing a full run. All that being said I did something very similar in Capetown a couple of years back and that put an end to my 'flat out blind' thinking.
  • 2 0
yup setup. Just trying to con people. Nice soft landing into bushes, but would still take stones to pull it off.
  • 2 0
Set up lol really! That third dude in the slow mo just sliding along into shot made my day. Head first into a pile of bikes. So so funny. If it was set up he totally fucked up. Can't stop laughing at the camera dudes haircut. Skullet pmsl
  • 1 0
Like i said I am not saying it didn't happen the way the video makes out more that things don't really add up, like the first rider that went over the edge is seen in the video by the camera rider with his bike on the landing zone and his HELMET OFF! i.e he has been down there long enough to take his HELMET OFF, which gives the camera rider plenty of time to off stopped! or in a week or so a second vid of them looking up from the ski slope of them crashing appears! which was meant to be them pulling off some sort of EPIC transfer line! all that bugged me really was the stick that people were given the builders and bike park.
  • 8 1
Some signage may help but really riders should get a sense of what they are barrelling into beforehand. What a great "Of F&%^!" moment that would be though coming off that ramp. Glad they were OK.
  • 14 0
Hucking it like they did without knowing the trail was certainly dangerous. But that corner is even more dangerous. Anyone riding it for the first time who carries like any speed over it will almost guarantee a injury. You have to basically slow to a crawl or you're going to have a bad time. Unsafe riders, even more unsafe building by the park.
  • 3 0
 +1 Cyrix!
  • 3 0
Agreed, given the speed gained from the first drop and the flow of the trail you would have to lock up the brakes to make the hairpin drop/turn. Not safe on wood, especially if it's a little wet.

To all the people saying they should have walked the trail, have you ever walked an entire park run? That's why people ride park, safely built, maintained trails that allow you to make the most of a day riding.
  • 2 0
I wasn't saying I'd walk it... just to use some discretion barrelling into the void. However, I agree the trail plays a huge part in the outcome. The first bridge you are expected to have enough speed to clear a small gap and it would be reasonable to assume a similar feature off the second were the trail built with a bit of continuity. At very least there should be a choke put in before turing onto the bridge to force riders to check speed.
  • 1 1
@cyrix that Park is One of the Best in the World and its also really well builded and also well builded.if you have never been to chatel Bikepark i wouldnt complain about that Trail/park
  • 11 2
 NEVER go full retard.
  • 6 1
Just dumb MFs. I've ridden that trail many times and it s really well built. It's written before you enter it that the level is high and that you have to ride it carrefully. (Maybe they were high too...)
  • 1 0
agree, i ride this trail for years, it's sweet, well build and you see where it's going.... if you ride with open eyes
  • 3 0
Frikking hell!!! Suspension has come a long waySmile I thought it was fake too but obviously there is more than one screwed up rim among those bikes.... a good lesson to be learned here, follow blindly at your own peril. Thanks to the leader the rest just pummelled right on straight on.
  • 3 0
There's something about riding a trail blind though, the uncertainty about what's coming up is a bit of a buzz, although riding it at a slower speed for the first run might he wise! Great video tho!
  • 2 0
Yeah 1st hit down a trail blind is one of the greatest feelings on a bike , just pure instinct and reacting to what comes.
  • 3 0
"Since this is a fast entry into a sharp turn, we should warn riders about it."
"OK, I'll put a 15cm sign about 3m before the turn, and hide it behind a tree so everyone sees it."
"Oui, ca roule!"
  • 3 0
Cameraman: when I saw myself flying over the handrail, I knew something wasnt right!
Other: you can sue them for no signs, oh my ankle!
Oh what a pile of bikes, look at that, lets check the take off zone hahaha
  • 2 0
Look. Don't dis the trail builders here... I've tried that trail... And it's bloody obvious where it goes.. You can even see on the helm cam for 3 seconds it goes left.. And first time down... Not at full pace... It's totally obvious. This is a group of no doubt talented riders... That just went too hard on a trail they didn't know.

As for " this would never happen / be better signposted in BC / USA"

In Europe is not common... Indeed rare.. Even in bike parks , to have drop or turning warnings on the trail... And we all know this.

This trail is amazing, and really really hard! The hardest bits were yet to come.
  • 5 1
I don't think that first guy was part of their group. He just made the same fail just a few mins earlier lol
  • 6 1
Props for NONE of them casing it on that guard rail. Go big or go home!
  • 2 9
flag jcinkits (Sep 30, 2013 at 11:35) (Below Threshold)
Props for them casing it ? the only reason they 'cased' it was not done by choice, but by chance and blind speed...more like: Go stupid and go to the hospital !
  • 7 0
 ^ reading comprehension fail
  • 1 1
not bloody likely billy bob from Tennessee...
  • 1 0
sessioning an unknown trail first at moderate speed is something even a brainfart would think of - on the other hand i guess not since they were all brainfarts - btw on a point like that where they got airborne a sign should have been posted well ahead...' trail builder ? ' more like trail builder bonehead .
  • 1 0
Well, yeah, they're pretty daft for not looking but in their defence it's a fairly fast section into a 90 left and sometimes the most fun in biking is those little moments when you're a bit out of control and blind. Ok...maybe not on a black section but they're all laughing and they'll be laughing about it down the pub for years so fair play to them....
  • 2 0
These trails have been filmed countless times so not checking them out in some form is no excuse! I'd never ridden Black Shore before July 2013 but knew where caution was needed.
  • 1 0
Health and safety , french style bring it on. We need more of that in the uk for sure! Those guys make city of london city pedestrians tweeting there way across the road with ear plugs up the ass and not looking where they are going smart. LOL! Glad none of them got hurt through. :-)
  • 1 0
i've only read the first few comments then felt the need to write too! so sorry for repeating what probably got said a thousand times here. those guys got off light and will probably take blind runs easier next time. i did the same years ago when i was a nipper and stacked a gap in chatel France. so yes pretty dumb idea to do that, but a good show of balls! balls that will shine when treated with care...
  • 7 3
Track builder will struggle to find a job after this little piece of viral goodness!
  • 4 3
why? its in no way the builders fault. simply ride the trail at a slower pace the first time. also on the approach you can see that it drops to the left.
  • 3 2
I am not sure, but I believe these guys are argentinians due to the accent and the fact that the one who looks like Krusty the clown has a zenith (argentinian bikes brand) tshirt
  • 1 0
You can tell he is from Cordoba because of his accent Big Grin
  • 3 0
 mas del norte, Tucumanos.
"Vaaaaa tener coompraa horquilla maaaa ancha" Chaaango! jajaja
  • 1 0
French isn't my 1st language, but I think he said:

"C'est vraiment de ta faute!"

and the guy on the ground said:

"Avale mes grosse couilles pute!"

Thanks Google translate!!
  • 2 2
I reacon the guy already on the ground in the black kit was first to do. When the first rider in that group goes over ,he had already landed it and they where going up for a go themselves. Why would all 4 go over when you could see your first two mates on the deck rolling round in pain, plenty of time to stop i think. They meant to do that line for sure
  • 3 0
It's like that saying your mum used to make. "If your friend jumped of a bridge would you?" In this case they did lol
  • 1 0
You're so right! This is up there with "If you keep making that face, you're going to get stuck like that."
  • 1 0
Stupid Argies! Anyone saying there needs to be a sign or anything like that is just wrong. Could of been worse, there's many places you could launch yourself like that off a cliff or into a ravine.
  • 1 0
Ahaha I remember watching this on youtube awhile back! Still a good laugh. Reminder to watch your lines or even walk a few coz you never know when a builder will make a jump off a cliff haha
  • 4 0
aaaaaaahahahahha omg... glad you're all okay.
  • 15 2
Apparently one of the guys was pissing a lot of blood and had to go to the hospital. That feature should be marked with a sign or higher fence, or something. Carrying like ANY speed over that would get you hurt. You have to seriously slow down there. It's just flat out dangerous.
  • 9 3
Agreed. Can't believe this is in a bike park. Seriously bad building!

Were the bikes OK?
  • 3 0
If you watch more of the end, there is some damage. One guys wheel is basically tacoed.
  • 3 1
Something I've always learned: Stay on the trail. At least they're OK. Something like increasing signage needs to be done anyways.
  • 3 0
Props to the riders for having the balls to put this on youtube. Thanks so much!
  • 5 1
 Darwinism in full effect!
  • 1 0
I love how people get so political and debate over some of the most useless stuff. ITS INTENDED TO BE FUNNY, even the riders who were to actual ones to crash were laughing about it. Would it kill you to laugh a little? lol
  • 4 0
 Fucking badass stack!
  • 3 0
That was so far from what I was expecting.
  • 3 2
Lol dumb arses, done that run a few times, watched some clips first and checked the run the day I was riding, very fun trail if you know what's coming
  • 1 0
I fucking love how he gets over the rail, then he's like ''OHHH'' haha! Hope the guys are alright and everything but that was so funny haha
  • 2 0
What's the big deal? It's called freeriding. Hahah. Good thing thing they were OK.
  • 2 0
I love Chatel! There is nothing worse than nurfed bike parks. 99% of parks need 100% more Gnar.
  • 1 2
Its obvious where the trail goes if you have ever rode chatel.. I know a guy who builds there and he is definatley not an idiot.. they where just going flat out into a trail they dident know.. you dont have to walk the trail but the firsttime down it you should take it a bit steady before any feature especially on a trail like this! Its france.. health and safety do not exist!
  • 1 0
"health and safety do not exist" Gotcha....good to know - i'll be sure to avoid France since my testosterone level doesn't need to prove that i am retarded as well as a pretty decent BD rider
  • 2 0
What a lousy trail, it was like 15 seconds long and has a huge drop into bushes....
  • 1 0
 haha best comment yet
  • 1 0
Lolz! Just Lolz. I've done my fair share of stupid shit, but nothing that could revoke my right to ROFLMAO at this pack of morons.
  • 1 0
epic mistake, it was funny, but he'll learn from it though, to all the people on here slagging him off for bad riding, haven't you ever made a mistake on a trail,
  • 4 2
Tinha que ser argentino.... Haha, massa!!

ps: calma argentinos. Tô só brincando.
  • 2 0
all this complaining that looks totally doable they should go back up and clear the bush to field wicked line Wink
  • 1 0
 www.pinkbike.com/video/280419

1.10-1.15 or so, clearly a left hander on shore style, which should ridden very slowly!
  • 2 0
 Feel sorry for the follower...
  • 1 0
I'd prefer that line over the corner! Funniest thing I've seen buckled rim and all.
  • 1 1
c'mon guy..he wont to gap the bridge and land on the grass..they wheren't fast enaugh and they crash..they know all the park also before try it.
  • 2 1
they didn't know shit about this ride and anyone watching this vid would know that - i'm happy they did not get seriously hurt, but you don't have a clue about riding or what your saying if you actually watched this vid; they were going plenty fast and were not trying to 'gap' the bridge and land on the bloody grass [ 30 feet out, 10 feet down to a flat - yeh right...bloody happy you aren't a builder - do you even know how to ride ]
  • 1 0
 sure
  • 2 0
So that's where they sent Mt Washington's trail crew.
  • 1 0
 HA!
  • 1 0
Crazy kids, and i think there are some wrong about the trail that we can't notice any warning sign...
  • 3 0
 new line
  • 1 0

  • 1 0

  • 1 0
This is why I ALWAYS check the line first. That could have been a lot worse.
  • 2 0
That was dumb. How about getting to know before committing.
  • 1 1
would have cleared it with a 29er for sure, almost cleared with a 650b Wink . Kids don't do drugs and never follow the leader, you'll end up like communist Russia ;0.

  • 1 0
This was insane! No matter how many times I watch it, I'm still speechless and like Eek
  • 2 3
Well... that could have been a lot worse... we're all guilty of going off trail, but how do you not see it drop to the left after a sign as well...

They look like sheeps following the first one.
  • 1 0
awesome. seems like a good line, just trim that bush back

  • 1 0
@HundredPerCent: Dude, these were 4 guys from Argentina. Watch the video again, there are 4 guys down there after the crash. The first one went in a few seconds before the rest, that's all.
