September 8th and 9th saw the culmination of 5-race series of 2012 Oregon Enduro Series that included a total of 25 stages that ranged in times from 3 to 16 minutes in length. The best combined times of all stages of the series crowned the series' winner. This final race of the 5-race series included a total of seven stages over two days. Saturday's three stages took place on Mt Hood with its dry, loose soil while Sunday's four stages were held on the tight, rocky and more technical Sandy Ridge trail network in the Mt. Hood Wilderness.

Oregon Enduro Finals Mt. Hood
Stage #1 started at the historic Timberline Lodge which is located 6 miles up the mountain from the main highway. While it was more of a hiking trail, it suited the enduro format very well.

The Pro fields were again plentiful including around 40 men and over 10 women representing many Western states and Canadian Provinces.

The Pro classes may get most of the focus but the 'bread and butter' of these events are the Category 1,2 and 3 classes that include future pros, weekend warriors and everyone in between. Overall the Oregon Enduro Series attracted riders from 25 different states (including Hawaii) and 8 different countries.

Five races...one new venue to replace Sisters. 3 one-day events and 2 three-day events. We will continue to build a fun festival atmosphere for racers, spectators and sponsora and draw the biggest names in the sport to race in the PNW

gotta love enduro! fun read and great pics as always

Looks like Oregon puts on a legit enduro series. Notice the winner didn't have a 29er. That's one way you know it's legit.
  • 2 0
 Awesome.
  • 7 2
The entry fees are a joke! They seem to go up about $15 a year, so next year will be what? $105 per race? The series is kick ass, the trails will leave a smile on your face but the fees are enough to keep many away!
  • 3 2
Yeah, considering all the sponsers they have, the organizers must be raking in the cash. The timing methods they use are also a joke, according to Lopes, which is why he didn't contest the series. But don't get me wrong, enduro is awesome, glad this series exists.

You are essentially racing 4-7 short 4-20 min races, grouped together, over 2 days. With the planning that takes, I don't think it's expensive at all. Whats one single run 4-5 min DH race cost these days $40 bucks?
  • 7 1
 Bcstockton and Protour,

Enduro style races with this many stages require a much higher level of logistics and planning than a typical DH race. The costs associated with this race are also very expensive (shuttles, land use permits, signs and equipment, food, port-a-john rentals, etc) All of this adds up quickly. Since the Oregon Enduro is relatively new, there was a respectable turnout, but not enough to be "raking in cash." The timing system is much more complex than a typical DH race with only 1 or 2 timed portions. Then take into account some of these races were conducted in areas with no wi-fi signal or even cell service. Imagine trying to combine all that data after the last stage of the day, and if something goes wrong, hand entering it into Excel.

Just giving you an inside perspective of what it takes to put the series on Wink

Timing problems worldwide with enduro eh? Shame as enduro racing is definitely the place to be.
  • 3 0
I am not new to the racing world, been doing it for years and love competition. But when entry fees start hitting the $100 (US) mark and you add in camping/lodging, gas and food you are looking at a 4 to 500 dollar weekend. That is ridiculous! When promoters promise trail work to fix repairs from races and then fail EVERY time to follow through, that is horse shit. I have spent many hours working on trails, building trails that I would like very mountain biker to experience for free. Then you have a promoter that makes false promises, charges a way more than what seems reasonable, has the race then walks away.

Don't get me wrong, I love enduro racing, but for the privateer it is getting farther and farther out of reach. I would protest any race on a trail that I work on, maintain or build just for the pure fact that promoters are not going to go back an fix the damage done by racers.

Like or not, its the truth.

bcstockton, racing is not cheap no matter what. So if the entry cost were $30 less, then all the sudden your $400-$500 weekend being $30 less makes you feel happy? You make some valid points with trail damage, but to threaten protest over it is nuts. How are you going to protest Mother Nature, when she drops way more damage on the trial over the winter, than the race ever did? Trails will need work no matter what. Have a good time man. Most of the people racing this series, are having a freaking blast, even with the money spent. Also, I am pretty sure many trails get expedited tree clearing and prep before the race, to let the race happen. Sure there is some extra holes and ruts left after the race, but you may have been waiting months for the trail to be cleared in the first place, if the race did not happen. Pro's and cons to everything.
  • 1 0
Yep, 30 bucks saved buys more beer! 30 bucks saved over the course of race season adds up to more money in my wallet. So yeah, makes me feel happy. As a matter of fact I have a cold one I am going to drink right now instead of reading smart ass banter about 30 bucks and Mother Nature. Goddamn

This debate could go on forever, anyone else care to get up on their soap box?

Great Stuff Mike!! The Series was Awesome! Can't wait for next year.

BTW...next year will have 3 one-day races and 2 two-day races....no three-day (unless you count a day for practice and/or a day to recover from the after parties!!)

SO pissed I missed this one...

The Glade and the other trails up there are AMAZING for Enduro racing (and I have a fair bit of a special interest seeing as I cut a good ammount of those trail during fire season over the last 15 years. Enjoy Mt. Biking in Oregon??? THank your Wildland FF's cause were the guys who cut every inch of trail on that mountain. The tril crews sure do an awesome job of making them rideable though aye. Good work guys)...

The Oregon Enduro has got to be one fo the best Enduro series in the country aye. I'm even MORE pissed I wasnt there cause I REALLY wanted to see Kintners Range 650B up close (I seriously think that bike would be THE best bike for that race...She just needs to run Nevegals on it and she wouldn't have had the flat problems Wink )

God Job guys, I'm glad to see Adam Milnor is still up there... makes me feel old as he was a wee little grom when I used to live in Govvy... Great guy who works hard as aye. Way to go Adam AND the rest of the trail crew. Wrd is we're gonna have a full blown "whistler Style" park at Timberline here in the near future and THAT is onna be awesome. GO OREGON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

am I missing something? whats with the goggles/xc helmet combo?
  • 4 0
 super dusty trails
  • 1 0
ah. I was under the impression they had staggered start times but maybe not
  • 2 0
we had 1min gaps but if you were to catch someone, you couldn't see much because of a huge cloud of dust that was up for 20sec
  • 2 0
Dusty trails, mud, branches etc.. lots of things that can get in your eyes.. If you wear contact lenses a pair of goggles is a pretty effective protection, even if it makes you look a bit goofy, but who cares ! It looks kinda good on those riders.

I'll be running a light Enduro full face most of the season next year I think. On some of the stages, the speeds were so fast, even glasses let enough dust/wind in that your eye's could not stop tearing up. Not to mention, on some of the stages that were almost 20 min, you sweat bad enough that glasses get messy, and sweat in your eyes gets reduced with goggles. Some of the stages were straight up DH bitchin gnar if you get off the brakes.
  • 3 0
Riddle did it. So I did it. Thats probably the real reason!
  • 2 0
I hit some lift access during a 100 degree day this year. I pulled off the full face in one ride and went to the car for the xc helmet. Then, after gettings buts and dirt in my eyes I went back for my goggles. If anyone thought I looked dumb they did so with crap in their eyes or while over heating. Who looks dumb: the guy using effective gear or the guy refusing because he wants to look good?
  • 2 0
ah, totally get it now....nothing worse than riding through a dust cloud for sure
