What can you say about Giant's Josh Carlson? He's smooth, fast, fit and he came out on top for the series in the stacked Pro category. Congrats, Mate!
September 8th and 9th saw the culmination of 5-race series of 2012 Oregon Enduro Series that included a total of 25 stages that ranged in times from 3 to 16 minutes in length. The best combined times of all stages of the series crowned the series' winner. This final race of the 5-race series included a total of seven stages over two days. Saturday's three stages took place on Mt Hood with its dry, loose soil while Sunday's four stages were held on the tight, rocky and more technical Sandy Ridge trail network in the Mt. Hood Wilderness.
Stage
#1 started at the historic Timberline Lodge which is located 6 miles up the mountain from the main highway. While it was more of a hiking trail, it suited the enduro format very well.
The Pro fields were again plentiful including around 40 men and over 10 women representing many Western states and Canadian Provinces.
Jill Kintner (Team Norco Intl.) recovering from a broken arm and back on Northwest soil doing what she does best. Jill had an unfortunate flat in the rock garden just above this section that knocked her off the podium.
The Pro classes may get most of the focus but the 'bread and butter' of these events are the Category 1,2 and 3 classes that include future pros, weekend warriors and everyone in between. Overall the Oregon Enduro Series attracted riders from 25 different states (including Hawaii) and 8 different countries.
Luke Mason (Sagebrush Cycles/Giro) with another consistent weekend, placing 5th in the Cat 1 Men category. Check out Luke's chain. It's wrapped around the end of his crank arm!
Marci Thuren battles her way through the upper rock garden of stage
#4 of the Oregon Enduro finals near Mt. Hood, OR.
If you enjoy Sandy Ridge's trails please thank this man, Adam Milnor. Adam, along with many other dedicated builders, has spent many-an-hour moving dirt and rocks so that all riders can be entertained and challenged. Adam came out just to watch riders of all abilities take different lines through his work.
Roger Murphy through a series of jumps and berms. Stage #4.

Five races...one new venue to replace Sisters. 3 one-day events and 2 three-day events. We will continue to build a fun festival atmosphere for racers, spectators and sponsora and draw the biggest names in the sport to race in the PNW

Enduro style races with this many stages require a much higher level of logistics and planning than a typical DH race. The costs associated with this race are also very expensive (shuttles, land use permits, signs and equipment, food, port-a-john rentals, etc) All of this adds up quickly. Since the Oregon Enduro is relatively new, there was a respectable turnout, but not enough to be "raking in cash." The timing system is much more complex than a typical DH race with only 1 or 2 timed portions. Then take into account some of these races were conducted in areas with no wi-fi signal or even cell service. Imagine trying to combine all that data after the last stage of the day, and if something goes wrong, hand entering it into Excel.
Just giving you an inside perspective of what it takes to put the series on
Don't get me wrong, I love enduro racing, but for the privateer it is getting farther and farther out of reach. I would protest any race on a trail that I work on, maintain or build just for the pure fact that promoters are not going to go back an fix the damage done by racers.
Like or not, its the truth.
This debate could go on forever, anyone else care to get up on their soap box?
BTW...next year will have 3 one-day races and 2 two-day races....no three-day (unless you count a day for practice and/or a day to recover from the after parties!!)
The Glade and the other trails up there are AMAZING for Enduro racing (and I have a fair bit of a special interest seeing as I cut a good ammount of those trail during fire season over the last 15 years. Enjoy Mt. Biking in Oregon??? THank your Wildland FF's cause were the guys who cut every inch of trail on that mountain. The tril crews sure do an awesome job of making them rideable though aye. Good work guys)...
The Oregon Enduro has got to be one fo the best Enduro series in the country aye. I'm even MORE pissed I wasnt there cause I REALLY wanted to see Kintners Range 650B up close (I seriously think that bike would be THE best bike for that race...She just needs to run Nevegals on it and she wouldn't have had the flat problems )
God Job guys, I'm glad to see Adam Milnor is still up there... makes me feel old as he was a wee little grom when I used to live in Govvy... Great guy who works hard as aye. Way to go Adam AND the rest of the trail crew. Wrd is we're gonna have a full blown "whistler Style" park at Timberline here in the near future and THAT is onna be awesome. GO OREGON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
