Video: Up and Down Squamish

Up and Down Squamish features a thrilling trail ride loop on Diamond Head in Squamish, BC. Shot in sequence, this 30km loop takes around 2-3 hours, hits 6 trails, climbs a total of 1500 metres (nearly 5000’), and rewards you with 10 km of descent. Enjoy a mix of hand built trails and machine built trails that have been made possible by SORCA, Dream Wizards, and countless volunteer hours.

The first trail on the loop is called Power Smart. Located at a high elevation and off the beaten path, this trail has endured more damage caused by water than by cycling, dirt biking, hiking, or even horse riding. This trail is wild, with lots of steep, technical switchbacks and loose rocks the size of your head. During most of the year water runs down the trail, you’ll be sure to get your feet wet. It’s not a popular trail that gets ridden very much and it is in dire need of repair. This trail is a lot of fun to ride though, be sure to hang on tight. Power Smart feeds into IMBA Smart. There are nice long corners and well planned switchbacks on this trail. Enjoy a descent followed by a bit of climbing as you pass from mature forest to areas of regrowth. Carve around narrow round corners, cross tidy bridges, and have a fast exit! This trail is another hand built gem in the Sea to Sky Corridor. Next is a trail called Fred. This is a good XC trail that has a few punchy climbs, some short, steep descents, and lots of technical turns. The more you ride it the more you’ll discover the flow built into this trail. It gets better every time you ride it. Ongoing maintenance continues to improve the drainage and speed.

Tinder is next; it is the obvious way to connect Fred and Your Mom. A brand new machine built trail by Dream Wizards, it features bermed corners, braided climb lines, table top jumps, split cedar river crossings, and manageable grade climbs. Cruise through fresh clear cut and enter the mature forest! Your Mom is a real charm. Here you will find lovely curves and corners. Beware of adjacent borrow pits as one false move means you’ll be buried alive. The gentle terrain carries good speed, but watch out because there are corners that will catch you if you’re going too fast. You will finish on Phil and Cams which is also the bottom of Pseudo-Tsuga. This piece of trail rewards you for all the hard work you’ve put in. Enjoy easily acquired speed, bermed corners, rollers, and optional gap lines as you cruise down to the bottom parking lot. People will be watching, so be sure to pick off the last gap to berm.

Thanks to Dunbar Cycles and Transition Bikes for making this video project possible. Thanks to SORCA for overseeing and maintaining the vast Squamish trail network. Thanks to Dream Wizards for the addition of Tinder Trail this summer. If you feel obligated please purchase a trail pass and/or donate to SORCA for increased maintenance and further trail development at SORCA on Trailforks. - Sid Slotegraaf

That was awesome, I've ridden those trails a bunch this year and that is how I imagine I ride them. In reality I don't ...

I'm not even sure I can imagine riding those trails that well. I need to imagine that I can imagine. Or something...

Squamish rocks. Awesome trails, friendly and welcoming locals. Great place to visit - spend the morning shredding the trails, the afternoon shredding Howe Sound windsurfing or kiteboarding, have some local beer and food at night, repeat.

Oh, and while you're there... get the TrailMapps app (will work even when you don't have a cell signal, since it caches the maps and runs off the phone's GPS for location - no cell tower required), and be sure to buy a SORCA trail pass. There's a metric shit ton of volunteer effort that goes into building and maintaining this ridiculously awesome trail network, and as visitors, the least we can do is make a contribution to help them defray the cost of that.

So many "holy shit" moments in the roots and rough. I demo'd the Transition Smuggler and was truly impressed with how confident the bike felt even through gnar that I'd never have thought conquerable with comfort on 115mm of travel. With the same suspension design the Patrol has got to be an absolute bomber with 45mm more suspension in the back. Glacier, N. Fork, near DH worthy.
Buy Transition, you'll be most pleased.

Just got on a Patrol demo bike the other day.... pedals great, and feels like a DH bike on the way down. Not sure I would be cutting that corner like Sid, but definitely inspires confidence! Great vid.

All due respect to the other great places in the world to ride, but Squamish is the best anywhere! Second to none! Huge thanks to DW for all the recent work and new trails! You rock!

Squamish is so rad. Sometimes I wish we could trade SORCA and the politicians of Squamish for NSMBA and out North Vancouver politicians. Squamish has fully embraced mountain biking with open arms. So much amazing trail work happens there with very little red tape. Hats off to you guys. The new standard!
  • 22 4
What a strange thing to say. Squamish has great trails. North Van has great trails. Both the NSMBA and SORCA try very hard and have accomplished fantastic things. There -- was it so hard to simply compliment both trail systems and both sets of volunteers?
  • 5 1
Thus, what is wrong with the Shore. Full of ungrateful whiners....
  • 5 1
Hey Lee. Maybe more about the politics I think. Seems like a lot of people are frustrated on the shore with all the red tape. Obvs I love the shore. I live here. Squamish just really embraces mountain biking. See's the value. It appears north van doesn't as much. We love it here. We just want more. Anyway, it's an opinion. We all have one
  • 7 1
The ungrateful part - well, people take trailwork for granted - I accept there'll be the entitlement mentality. The part knocking the NSMBA is weird though theedon.

The Shore took a long time to get to the point where trails are even considered legit. We've come a long way from back-in-the-day when trails on Cypress, Fromme were getting chainsawed. We probably still have a long way to come.

In Squamish they have (mainly) one land manager and some private land owners. The Shore has something like 5 land managers. Respectfully, I think you're missing the point that the red tape in the Shore is a factor of having to deal with so many competing interests.

Anyway enough about the politics. I've come around to the thinking that the bureaucratic stuff is a necessary "evil" and that if it means sanctioned trails and no more mass chainsawing and decommissioning of trails that's a good thing
  • 3 1
Hey we've both done are fair share of trail work, I just want some new legit trails. Anything new here is illegal. It sucks that it has to be that way. Secret stuff gets shut down. You know what I'm talking about.

What do you guys do about environmental groups from screaming about water quality? Those trails, while awesome looking, are essentially gutters.

All of our trails must be considered 'sustainable' in the sense that they can't allow sediment to fill streams, hurting fish habitat.

Is there just very little environmental concern for this, or are the majority of the trails on private land and no one says anything? Just curious what is said about all that and what happens behind the scene since all I know is what I read on here and reports from friends who go out there and ride and come back grinning.
  • 3 1
very interesting comment. As a Squamish resident who is very involved in the mountain biking community and on the SORCA exec, I'm stoked that you feel Squamish is so damn awesome. However, there is plenty of red tape and tons of politics here as well, maybe we just hide it well. So hats off to NSMBA and all of the other associations. It's an uphill battle for all of us and there are times we feel we may be winning but still plenty of times that we are just dodging bullets.

@parkkills - The Powersmart Squamish trails were built with volunteer labour and a $ 60k donation from BC Hydro back in the early 2000s. Someone else might be able to recall if Min of Forests or other government agencies helped. That was a long time ago and it got pretty worn because it was shuttle accessible. I remember actually being able to climb most of Middle Powersmart when it was first built.

Bottom line is that yes - it's eroded and pretty beat but also its a pretty old trail that got heavily used. It's also in an area that is slated to be logged sometime in the future and not near watershed so the concern about water quality isn't there. Someone else can speak to whether newer trails need to be built to an environmental standard

5000 feet of climbing in 2 hours? That's some XC-racerboy ish right there!
  • 1 0
Thats what I was thinking, damn.
  • 1 0
agreed. 20km of up, and 10 km of down. in two hours. 0_o
  • 3 1
Fantastic! I love when sht gets so wet that it actually seems easier than in the dry. When you enter such a slippery and steep mixed rock and root section things become so clear - you can't touch brakes because you will eat sht big time. Similar to my home trails but unfortunately they are nowhere close to those elevations...
  • 6 1
Umm.. was that a rad ass bike edit or was that a tourism Squamish video? I think that was slam dunk for both.

I learned two things: I can't ride and that guy can. Can imagine that he pretty much crushes on any bike. ok, that's three things.

Frikin Eh Sid! Shred on my friend. Shred on!

I'm headed to Squamish in July. Trail recomendations anyone? I'll be on a 6" bike looking for single track fun. Maybe some gnar here and there too.
  • 8 0
All of them. Pick up a trail map from one of the local bike shops and ask them about what's running well while you're there - so much trail work going on here that the choice picks change on a weekly basis!

Generally good to start in the area above Quest Uni though. Head up the legacy climbing trail and ride Half Nelson and Angry Midget - the first is machine built pump track flow, the second is a more natural rooty and downright fast singletrack.

When you're looking for a bit more gnar head over to Mice&Men hill, go up the 50 Shades of Green climbing trail and pick any route down from the top. Pretty much slab city up there.

Sweet, thanks man. I'm legitimately stoked. I'm hitting quite a few spots before and after Squamish, but I'm most excited about the trails there. I even just got a Transition Patrol so this video is making me even more ready.

Upper powersmart is scary. The dirt is all gone. Only gnar is left.
