Where would you go, if you could road trip anywhere? - Pinkbike Poll

Aug 26, 2016 at 13:48
by Vernon Felton
Here’s the premise: Someone walks up to you and offers to cover your expenses for a weeklong, mountain biking road trip to….anywhere. You pick the location, no strings attached. Since this is a fantasy proposition, let’s just assume that the person isn’t a serial killer in disguise and that they can somehow also cover your work/family/school/ferret-sitting obligations. In other words, you’re free and clear to go.

So, where would you go? Sky’s the limit here. Since I didn’t want the poll to run off the page and I am, frankly, a bit limited on the imagination front, I assuredly left off several cool spots and godknowshowmany countries that deserve to be on that survey list. Mea culpa. It wasn’t intentional. So, if you’re dying to ride India or Kazakhstan, click “other” and tell us, in the forum, where you’d go instead.

If you could take a weeklong mountain biking trip anywhere today, where would you go?

Everyone should stay home. Nothing to see in BC. No trails worth riding and heavy localism.
  • 40 3
 Whistler is all hype huh?
  • 59 14
@chillrider199: Whistler bike park would be the one place you should go riding, anything else would be a waste of time

Funny, I say the same thing about utah. Spoiled Smile

I voted for NZ because BC doesn't have anything cool for the wife and family. Or does it?
  • 15 3
@sevensixtwo: Depends how the wife and family ride. A lot of wives and families killin it in BC.

@sevensixtwo: Bc has a lot to offer for anyone. We were there for a month 3 years ago. As stupid as i was though i did not go mtbiking once! I regret this every day...

It's funny, I grew up and live by the beach and split my time between surfing and riding bikes. One of the things I love most about riding and racing bikes is the friendliness and community. Sadly, surfers are a bunch of assholes, please don't act like them.

flying to Vancouver was the biggest waste of money ever. Shredding Dirt Merchant wasn't fun at all. I go back to road cycling

I voted New Zealand (which has been on my bucket list for years). But I only picked NZ because it wouldn't let me vote more than one destination and my dream bike vacation is to do NorCal, Oregon, Washington and BC all in one 3-4 week roadtrip!
  • 9 1
Agree .. its never been the same since the government CLOSED 95% of the trails. Just dedicated paved bike lanes everywhere.

@sevensixtwo:Nope you're right, unless you're from NZ, then you get to spend thousands of extra dollars jet setting here, staying in fancy hotels, so you can brag to all your pretentious friends about how cultured you are, and that you have been here, there and everywhere else, take a million selfies of you sitting on your bike weather you rode it or not so you can FBook them to your 770 friends and counting.

The lost lake trails alone is worth going for, which is pretty crazy when thinking about the amount of riding in the proximity(Bike park, other trails around whistler, pemberton, squamish).

  • 1 0
@ibishreddin: haha yeah, I feel ya. I shrug off hate on the reg as well
  • 4 0
@Sprockingcrail: Interestingly, a small chunk of the southeastern tip of California is considered part of the Sputhwest, the northernmost chunk considered Pacific Northwest by some peoples' definition, and the rest is just... California. I dunno if Pinkbike didn't want to have am option for just one state or not.. But it seems silly to miss it with so much riding and so many cool towns and different biozones to explore.
  • 3 0
@Sprockingcrail: Cali has lots of good riding! Some of the trails are great especially in northern California. But if its an all expense paid road trip it's hard to beat the pacific northwest and the trails up in BC for perfect dirt, feature packed terrain, and lushness. However when this trip is done plays a huge factor as to where the destination will be.

Iceland seems like a great place till you go and you realize the whole country is filled to the brim with tourists and bitter locals
  • 1 0
@Bikerguy13: Really? Lots of tourists for sure, but unless you are really lazy it's easy to get off the beaten track around the ring road. All the locals we met were full of smiles (and as we were travelling with our kids, we spent a fair amount of time in neighbourhood playgrounds interacting with locals not involved in the tourist industry).
  • 1 0
@dsut4392: Was there for there for 2 1/2 weeks and only met one local who was friendly. We explored the coast and the interior too, it could just be a coincidence but something tells me it's not considering the duration of the trip. That being said, the country itself is beautiful and definitely worth seeing at some point in your life

I recently got back from a driving trip is Switzerland along some of (if not) the greatest driving roads in the world. Mountain biking there would be on another level completely. I have NEVER been anywhere so stunning in all of my life! Go there! Even for a drive or just to stand in the mountains and take it all in. You will never forget it and never regret it!

It would take a hell of a lot more than a week long trip to ride everything I want to in BC. More like a year! You know its that good when given the choice to go anywhere in the world, and you choose the province right next to you.
  • 8 0
I live in BC and still haven't come close to hitting it all. Sometimes I go to other destination bike spots and they're always fun but ultimately just a fun alternative before coming home to the goods.

I've been to Whistler three times now and each time I go I realize just how much more there is. 11 days this year and 13 the last time and I am still shocked that I keep finding more stuff!
  • 2 0
It really is the greatest place for riding mountain cycles on earth. Fernie is closest for me and there is so much riding down there I am yet to explore. Every time I think I have found something amazing, I'm blown away by other riding spots or trails. Just keeps getting better and better. I would love to take a month long camping trip and ride a new spot every day.

@VPS13: There was a great vid a couple of months on here talking about all the riding on some of the islands as you head south from Whistler along the Sea to Sky corridor. Seeing stuff out there and meeting local peeps is my next big desire.

Renting a pickup to carry the bike can be kind of expensive but I'll make it work some how.

I didn't predict that NZ would be so high on the list. But then again we get soooo many Kiwi visitors around here in Squamish and Whistler, it makes me realize there is probably some big time two-way migration. I hope to ride in NZ one day. In the meantime, you Steinlager-chugging, loam-hunting, fun-loving sheep herders are welcome up here any time with your big smiles and mad skills.

What! Austin Texas doesn't make the list!.... just kidding, come for the tacos not the biking.
  • 3 0
I lived (and biked) in ATX for 13 years up through mid-2012, followed by NorCal (1 yr), and SoCal (3 yrs to date). Going back to ATX biking wouldn't be a total bust but I'd definitely need an annual week(or two) at Whistler, CO, Angel Fire, etc to feel whole. Serious props to the Freeride512 guys for taking the freeride scene up by several notches, wish that had been around when I was there. Oh yeah... and the tacos totally rocked.

Just moved to Bay Area after 13 years in ATX and while the lush smooth fast flowy stuff here is beautiful and amazing, I still miss the super loose rocky steep tech gnar form back home.

Australia - its a great place to live, some beautiful parts of the world are here, however, as far as mountain biking goes - once you've been to the likes of Canada, New Zealand and similar, you realise how restrained and under-resourced mountain biking is in Australia. I want to tick off all those options that are on that poll, not just one.
  • 4 0
I've been to Oz twice, for a year the first time, and aboutique 5 weeks the second. Surf, people, nature-all so rad. The trails I rode, near sydney's northern beaches and blue mountains were such a bummer though. I thought cairns looked like a place with awesome potential, but I couldn't find a bike hire anywhere! Restrained and under resourced for sure! That said, meat pies were deadly!
  • 2 0
I moved to Australia from Europe recently, and I'm really bummed by the lack of decent trails. Even the official trails in some of the state forest are really disappointing. I'm surprised that Oz still produces so many high caliber riders with such a lack of trails.
  • 1 0
@VwHarman: Definitely agree on the pies! Think if you make it all the way to Australia its worth jumpin on a plane to hit up NZ. That place is freakin rad.

I can't wait to cruise across France and Austria bouncing around bike parks. Drinking amazing wine and booze all along the way :/ But only bc I've been to Whistler already... Based purely on terrain I would have to check out all of the trail riding around Squammish and Pemberton area. Winter Park, Keystone, and Crested Butte or Angel Fire would be a good week. Or how about Big Bear, Mammoth, and Northstar. 2 week trip?

I would have said NZ but BC for me as i would just love the ceders and wooded areas and just for a weeks worth of memory on my go pro that i could play when i came home but hell am to old to peddle much anyway so would have to have one of them four wheel motor bikes to carry my bikes around anyway or lots of charging points for e-bikes as the old tickers pretty shot these days!!!

I'd head for Scandinavia, maybe Norway or Sweden. I've been to Åre and loved it, lots of sick trails and a chilled out town. I'd say these places get overlooked for the cheaper resorts in the Alps but they are worth a look. You get what you pay for, and the Scandi's always do top quality. I would start in Oslo and ride the local Tryvann trails, then up to Hafjell and finish in Trondheim.
  • 1 0
Just came back from a road trip through Norway and Sweden, it was really nice ! Near Oslo you have Drammen, a small bike park which totally worth a day or a half-day. On the road to Hafjell you also have Geilo, an other small bike park with some awesome tracks. Hafjell is definitely one of the best bike park I ever ride and Trondheim is nice place to be ! I was a little bit disappointing by the bike park of Äre, a lot of trails but I don't like many of them. But in the way down we were in Järvsö Bergscykel Park which was definitely one of the highlight of the trip ! All the tracks are so fun to ride. Norway definitely have the greatest driving roads (between Oslo and Hafjell). Wa also do some hike between the resorts (Odda, ...)
  • 2 0
I live in Colorado, so I already have all that, and I lived in AZ for a long while, so I've sampled most of the trails there. I was thinking maybe ID and OR, because I haven't been there, but if someone else is paying might as well be Italy or New Zealand. Go big or go home! Already been to Whistler, love it, but I'm all about checking out something new.
  • 3 1
Have rode my bike at 11 locations on the list so far, and after seeing the jackson hole edit, it might be my next stop, New Zealand, and BC are 2 of the best spots on the list they should have included Austria as it's great and the locals are sound.
  • 2 0
 Word!
  • 2 0
In terms of variety I think France is hard to beat. It has great bike parks, huge vertical, massive amount of lift accessed natural trails, different climates so it's rideable most of the year, great culture and plenty to do and see off the bike too. I voted BC, but if the Alps had been classed as one combined region ( not any larger than BC) then I think I would've voted for the Alps, there is just so much still to discover there, one lifetime is not enough.
  • 2 0
south america! like Chile etc, i am not shure about level of playfullness on local hills, but, hey, EWS was there! i think it worth to explore sometime! (now i just fullfilling my dream to ride trails across BC, one year stay, and man, one year is so SHORT! now 2 months of vacation are finally here, so lets go to explore! Fernie, Nelson, Kickin horse, Kamloops, Merrit etc etc, if you have some tips, PM me pls! i will really apreciated it! thx )
  • 1 0
Chile was the top of my list but there are different parts of every country in South America I wish I could explore. I think the poll is a little skewed by grouping the whole continent together. I think there are quite a few parts of S.A. that would hold their own in this poll.
  • 4 0
Yukon all the way. Went for 6 weeks two summers ago and can't wait for the day I get to go back.
  • 1 0
Vernon, you have no idea how much you nailed it haha. My mountain bike crew and I are planning a huge road trip next summer, so our answer is "Pretty much everywhere we want, within North America." And the clincher? One of our guys actually does have ferrets ????
  • 3 1
In a few weeks I'll be leading a group of college students on a week long biking road trip through BC - and get paid to do it! I love my job. Sorry, I'm just really excited.
  • 1 0
Don't apologize! Enjoy the west, just make sure to get on the ferry to shred the island!
  • 1 0
Although I picked BC, I can't stop recommending South America to everyone. Chile is amazing (house of both EWS and Andes Pacifico, check it out), Peru has really demanding routes and Colombia has everything (from deserts to snowy peaks and all in between). Almost all of those countries are very safe to ride and with great guides (Disclaimer: I'm from South America).
  • 1 0
I've ridden pretty much every top rated spot in US, even Hawaii and as amazing as they were BC is still the best place I've ridden. The terrain is just so rugged and perfect for mountain biking. The amount of trails and quality of trails is second to none. NZ is on the top of my wish list, as with one of those islands locales like Bali. The French alps look incredible as well. I think the BC interior is my next goal.
  • 1 0
 Where is the option everywhere?

I'd go east coast, west coast, south "side" (chile, argentina), new zealand, japan, africa...

There are so many places, but right now, there is a storm of a century out there and complete darkness which only lightnings distract for a moment :-)
  • 6 4
If you want thrilling riding experience bring your prime Enduro outfit that pink Santa Cruz Bronson with Pink Enves and show up at a gas station in the middle of Texas or Georgia.
  • 1 0
I'd go somewhere like the Himalayas, I mean why not, they might not have the best/funnest trails to ride but I would think that some/most of the other places listed are more easily accessible to me...for some reason that part of the world just seems so unreachable to me that I would jump at the chance of an all expense trip there for sure.
  • 2 0
I too was thinking North Carolina after the Neko interview, but being I live in New England, that trip will be a reality some day.

Surprised Switzerland didn't get as much love as I thought it would. I rode there last summer and it was jaw dropping. 10/10 would reccomend.
  • 2 0
South America, because the mountains are huge, the riding looks great and you get to experience a different culture. Nepal is also a dream destination.
  • 1 0
Yep, Beautiful, plenty of options, still quite untouched nature beside modern accessible trails and bike parks.... at least in Chile
  • 1 0
Peru has amazing trails. Come check us. out!
  • 1 0
I'm just back from a 3 weeks road trip in BC and I know I'll go back there (again..) ASAP !
The poll is asking more about a dream trip (meaning I can't afford it for now)... so NZ it is !
  • 1 0
How do we know where to ride until we share mountain biking with the world! You don't know till you've ridden it. I cannot answer this question. Who has a guide to mtbing the world, please share!
  • 5 0
 Himalayas.
  • 2 0
Can I just say 'all of the above' because I've not ridden anywhere except a few places in UK and Helsinki? I wish I could win the lottery and just do all of them.
  • 2 1
 1. Zermat, Switzerland
2. Bolivia
3. New Zealand
4. Vancouver
5. Downieville

Ey Pinkbike, next poll "if you could join any mtb race anywhere, what would it be?" .. You're welcome.
  • 1 0
I just booked a flight to Costa Rica! I'm so stoked to ride there and eat all the food. Only real debate is do i bring my bike or rent? Methinks bring, wwyd?
  • 2 0
I just did a bike trip to Hawaii so my experience is similar. I would say check the rental rates. Ours were about 80 per day per bike. in hindsight i would have brought my own. It is cheaper to bring your bike if you plan to stay and ride more than 2-3 days.
  • 3 0
New Zealand and BC, I could do it ... I know I could! Wink
  • 3 0
Live in BC already...so I went with Switzerland...
  • 1 0
Well I already live in BC! I've yet to explore Western US, roadtrip will come soon enough. For a "big" trip, I'd love to do NZ!

  • 1 0
Did Japan last year, some great jems to ride there, food and culture fantastic to. Heading back next month I enjoyed it so much, going to drop into New Zealand and Aussie while I am down that way.
  • 1 0
And they have @nikoniko, Brad Pitts' stunt double! The place instantly doubled in cool points AND kindness points when he moved in!
  • 3 0
If anyone comes to the Nagano (Japan) area, I would love to show them around and take them to the better free trails in the area. There is also a few lift access ski hills in the area as well.
  • 4 5
Just did a 2 week trip from eastern california (home) to Pemberton BC and back. Hit up Oakridge, Olympia, Squamish (!!!!), Whistler, Pemberton, Bellingham, Portland indoor Bike Park (Lumberyard), Sandy Ridge (Portland), Bend and finally Susanville CA (which isn't so great).

One week is too short for a trip to just about anywhere more than 2 states away. . . my guess is the author of this poll is an american with his horrible idea of a long vacation. I wish I was a Euro!
  • 3 3
Then quit bitching and move there.
  • 3 0
Iceland interests me. So does Scotland.
  • 1 0
Friend of mine just got back from Iceland, said the biking was off the charts.
  • 2 0
@wideload46: Did your friend ride the Glacier 360 race by any chance? If so I probably met them as I've just got back from volunteering in it.
...and yes, Iceland is simply stunning.
  • 1 0
@AlexRob: Nope, she did a lot of touring around Iceland but no races. Judging from what I've heard, Iceland is officially on the bucket list. Cheers.
  • 1 0
It would be interesting if the poll was able to compare it to where you are from. I picked NZ but believe I live in one of the greatest places in the universe to ride bikes.
  • 2 0
I would road trip 2 weeks forward in time when I can get my cast off of my arm, the I would resurrect my Moab trip.

Seriously, there's 32 people going to Germany? Why would you go to Germany? I constantly try to go riding abroad Smile
  • 1 0
Well everyone should at least once ride in Germany to experience the respect for bikers and cyclists you have there.
  • 1 0
@giopk70: perhaps I'm missing the sarcasm, but bikers are loathed by hikers on trails. Biking single trails is banned in many places in Germany. I've personally come across logs, nails, steel wires etc being placed by haters. But Germany does have some awesome trails, and I miss my home trails in the Black Forest.
  • 1 0
@cyclo-maniac: exactly! In Baden-Württemberg (Federal State) Bikers are not allowed to ride trails narrower than 2 meters, which hardly exists of course. That's some serious respect...where i live the Trails are regularly littered with branches and cut treestumps. Better be careful in the first ride down!
  • 1 0
Definitely Norway, massive mountains and always beautiful they even have some of the sweetest trails ever Wink

  • 1 0
 a place that's 20 deg
  • 5 8
Here we go again, making nouns into verbs. Since when was "road trip" a verb? Disappointing, Pinkbike.
  • 11 0
 I don't always grammar-nazi, but when I do it gets down-voted.
  • 2 1
 Yeah pretty spastic
  • 8 0
Trip is a verb as well as a noun, and road is an adverb in this circumstance. Webster and Oxford dictionaries both define the term 'road trip' itself as a noun and a verb. It's actually proper grammar.
  • 2 5
@saltine: Thanks for that. I know it's allowed, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.
  • 2 0
 @jaame: who the f*ck cares
  • 2 1
@Jack-McLovin: Me, Jack. I care. The media is educating young kids on correct use of English. As soon as the media starts f*cking up our language and making it into a dumber form, the standard of English drops. It's the only thing separating us from savages.
  • 4 0
 @jaame: That and opposable thumbs.
