Offering "an exclusive preview of the Osprey Canadian National Enduro Championships race course" on July 21-24 for riders who attend a $1299 riding clinic is unethical (I know that sounds harsh, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a better word for it). According to the BC Enduro Series webpage course details won't be released until the the Friday of the race weekend (Sept 3-4). This means that those few people who are able to find the time and afford to attend the Essential Enduro camp will get an extra 6 weeks of practice that is not available to any of the other racers! This is completely unsporting and essentially destroys any notion of a level playing field for that race.
The course information NEEDS to be released to all riders at the same time, so either release the course details to all racers on the weekend of July 23rd or keep it under wraps until right before the race like the BCES website states. Even if they choose to release the course info on the weekend of the 23rd having the people involved with creating the course offer a select, PAYING group of racers a course tour substantially unbalances the playing field. Practice and the issue local knowledge is already a significant issue in enduro racing, but this takes it to a whole new level. Even offering GUIDED pre-race shuttles to a select few, paying racers is a dubious notion at best, but I suppose that it is at least somewhat ok so long as it doesn't begin before the course info is released to everyone.
I know this comment may seem harsh and I honestly think that BCES is a great series and is doing great things for enduro racing in Canada, but I'm surprised that this idea ever made it beyond being tossed out in a brainstorming session! If enduro is going to grow and thrive as a race discipline the the playing field needs to be kept as level as possible and the impact of local knowledge has to be minimized. Offering exclusive course previews to the few who can afford to pay for it has the opposite effect! I'm pumped on the BCES and planning on spending significant time and money travelling to hit as many of the BCES East and West races as possible this summer, but this announcement shows a startling lack of forethought on the part of the organization. I'm hoping to see a response here from Megan or Ted addressing this issue as soon as possible.
Also, if $1300 is a good riding weekend, plus paying for the actual race weekend, I'm so far off the back it doesn't even matter anymore. Support grassroots races!
I'll just be straight up. No, we will not be giving the course away. We generally have no idea ourselves what the course will be until the week before the event. But, Wandering Wheels is right. It will probably be some mix of all of the best descents in town, so link those up on some awesome 4-5hr ride, and you'll likely have somewhat of similar course.
It's a shame that our industry secret, sometimes known as 'marketing' doesn't get communicated in the right way. So yes, maybe we should re-word it. Same goes for our offer of 'Pre-Race Shuttles', which actually will be at the same time as anyone, even the public can ride, we just trying to attract some people that were looking for an alternative to driving their own car. Wandering Wheels just put a marketing spin on it to help entice those that are looking for a little extra luxury, sorry if it came off the wrong way.
Let's just clarify a few things:
-BCES Courses will not be released to any group - paying or not
-Course locations are publicized and if you ask any local, they can likely tell you what trails will probably be in the race course
-All trails are open to the public, these are not 'our' trails, rather they are community trails.
-If I could plan the exact course 6-weeks ahead of time, that would be stellar, but there are so many logistics, that is rarely ever the case.
- Guided Shuttles - Simply means you don't have to beat up your car, and Matt will have beer waiting for you when you're done
-Wandering Wheels and the BCES are not giving away the course. We were trying to cater to people who wanted to come and ride some amazing trails, by marketing them in a certain way. We will likely ride the same 'course' as 2014, as that, by locals standard, is considered one of the most fun loops.
@barnz0rz (Kelly) you're right, we wouldn't give away the course, the spirit of Enduro is FUN an you're right, the package isn't for everyone, it's for some people who want to enjoy a little bit of a different experience.
We also love Grassroots race! So let's keep having maximum fun, on the best descents!
I'm really sorry that you guys thought of this so negatively. The Enduro Series is always about fun, exploring new areas and riding a ton of the best trails. We've heard a few people say they were looking for a little more of getaway, so we thought this was a cool idea. Unfortunately, it's not for everyone, but then hey, neither is a Karpiel Apocalypse.
Lastly, Matt and I are both rider's, not writer's, so pardon us if our wording or grammar is ever off. I know I'm still learning how to internet.
David and Kelly, sorry about this, let me know if I've clarified it enough, or if you still need reassurance that I've not sold my soul.
Thanks guys,
-Ted
If there's demand for a tour style weekend package(s), then you guys are smart as a business to capitalize and take advantage of it.
See you on the trail!
-Ted
All that said, as a professional organization it definitely pays to take the time to think about how you want to communicate your message with your audience before you release it. To me posting:
"Get an exclusive preview of the Osprey Canadian National Enduro Championships race course!" in bolded letters
sure makes it sound like the people attending that camp are going to get 'exclusive' course info and pre-riding that won't be available to anyone else. I get the need to market your events, and that you'll definitely be riding on portions of the course because they are just straight up awesome trails, but it would probably be helpful to choose your words a bit more carefully when doing press releases.
Thanks again for all the hard work you are doing to make the series happen, and how how about adding a super secret Karpiel Apocalypse (assuming you can find one somewhere) up-hill time trial to the Revy race? ;-)
All the best,
David
