Video: Our Process - Lunch Ride

Dec 13, 2013 at 16:29
by Yeti Cycles
Just another lunch ride.

Don't call us between 11:30 and 1:00. We won't be here. Every day, weather permitting, we shut our doors, turn on the answering machine and head out for a ride at lunch. With the headquarters situated at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, our local trails are just a few pedal stokes away. This daily opportunity to get out and ride is a large part of why many started working here, but at the same time, it allows us to test and refine new models, try out component spec, or just drop the boss on a climb. It is core to the process behind the bikes we design and manufacture.

They probably don't care either, so I wouldn't feel bad about. Yeti bike, Santa Cruz bike, its all the same. "Next!"
  • 28 2
Uhhhhh, I'm pretty sure they'd love an hour and a half for lunch
  • 20 3
Another cool part of the yeti lunch ride is being blown off in the middle of a warranty issue so they can go ride.

Jeez... I am sorry to ruin your fun here, but 90% of people in Western countries buy most of their stuff in Supermarkets and that includes food which is often grown in South America, India, China, hell yea - even Africa! Vast majority of meat you buy is more or less virtually "made" elsewhere. Supermarkets exist ONLY due to buying products made in China. So... You can't even force yourself to buy food made in your area, from a grocery store owned by a guy living in your area and you are going to give them sht for making bikes in China?!

By no means I am supporting outsourcing production to Asia as the global repercussions of such actions are just postponing the global fk up and pushing it on our grand children BUT it is extremely hard to live up to a position where you can honestly ciriticize someone for making stuff in Asia without being a hipocrite. Keep it lower ok?
  • 10 9
You could always buy a Nicolai, no Asians involved in the building of those bikes Wink
  • 8 7
No Asians, but what about Germans? Eek
  • 13 6
German engineering has proven time and time again it's as solid as it can get with superb quality controll, can't say that about asians though.... if only my boxxer was made by germans instead of asians...
  • 39 6
Your joke detector is probably made in Netherlands
  • 7 0
Wesselized, have you ever heard about Toyota and Mitsubishi Motors ?
  • 17 2
I will not "keep it lower"
I've gone out of my way to make my bikes as "North American made" as possible.I also DO do this with my groceries , cars etc etc.
It's stupid expensive and very hard to do.I wasn't dissing any company, since we all know most bikes are made in Asian countries.
I was noting that where the bikes are ACTUALLY made probably don't get the same privilege that the " partially assembled in America crew" gets. But hey, you Keep on judging.Im happy to provide you with some personal insight, so if you wanna take another stab at it.

I think your statement was pretty clear, scary1. That other guy just can't help himself when he sees the opportunity to voice his knowledge on certain topics, even if its at the cost of putting words in other people's mouths... But that's why his posts are so entertaining.

What?! I thought it was you who was judgmental...

So basicaly you mean that they should sit quiet under the load of guilt for outsourcing? Were you raised to be a devout Christian or what?

Local produce - stupid expensive? Try harder man. This is exactly where national debt in all western countries comes from
  • 6 0
waki-designs - it's a pretty f*cked up trend that locally produced foods are more expensive. This is due to the food conglomerates economies of scale, which reduces the price of food overall. So when you go to a farmer's market in the US, items like eggs, chicken, and vegetables tend to be more expensive (usually by a few dollars, but it adds up).

And a lot of the national debt in the US was actually caused by two wars we fund properly and bankers that gambled other people's money away, among others.

Those workers in Taiwan are extrememly skilled at what they do, get more vacatatian time then the average worker in the US, an enjoy free health care. Most people would trade a lunch ride for that.

Stop treating Asian manufacturing as if it is third world and oppressive. If you were to actually see some of the facilities your products were made in you would realize they are full of real human beings just like you and me, who are talented at what they do, and treated a well if not better than most western employees.

It's unfortunate that a company that sells bikes can't make a video about how they promote a healthy lifestyle for their employees that is unique to most workplaces without someone trying to rip them down.

Does it make you feel like more on man to be so self entitled that you must make a useless dig on someone tying to do something good?

GO YETI !!!
  • 11 6
I wanna see the promo video then.
Granted, China/Taiwan are generally known for their quality of life, high pay, freedoms and low hours at work...because that's how you get items made more cheaply. (Sarcasm off)

Seriously, I made a joke. You guys blew it up like a jihadi.
See, another joke...oops.
  • 5 3
You are making a generalization/stereotype of all Asian manufacturing. Yes, in many industries they do actually have it as good or better than us. The reason products are made cheaply in Asia are not because of exploitation of workers, it is very simply because they have built an economy around manufacturing on a large scale. The US only has itself to blame for disbanding our large scale manufacturing years ago. If you want something made here it will be high priced and boutique.

Here are some of those 3rd world oppressed workers for you ;-)

  • 6 3
Boy, you set me straight! I counted one picture of one Asian worker. Thanks for that.Very enlightening.
Maybe they're all out on their lunch ride, no?
Go away.

 Your ignorance is astounding

Not to stoke the flames, but heavy manufacturing in the U.S. has declined because it is cheaper to manufacture overseas. It's cheaper because the cost of labor (and complying with labor laws, unions, pension legacies, etc.) is higher in the U.S., due in part to the fact that the labor revolution brought about, at least to some extent, fair pay for a fair day's work. Add to that the cost of complying with environmental laws (substantial for heavy industry), securities laws, and a hundred other things I'm not thinking of, plus America's insatiable appetite for cheap products and the worship of the almighty share price/profit of public corporations, and you get the decline of heavy industry in the U.S. The reason labor is cheaper overseas is because companies, at least historically, do not have comprably high labor and environmental costs. I don't think it can fairly be said that labor conditions and environmental conditions are generally on par with the U.S. in many other countries involved in heavy manufacturing. China has some of the worst pollution problems on the planet. In 50 years, they will be dealing with the outsourcing problem too. Look at the whole FoxConn scandal. Of course, not every asian factory has deplorable conditions. And I doubt many U.S. factories give their workers a 1.5 hour lunch to go ride either, so it's not exactly apples to apples. Ok I'm done pontificating. I thought it was an interesting subject that rises up now and again.

But, I would like to state once more..and the last time.-I was just making a joke.Im so used to being negged on here,so I just don't no how to deal with the fame.

Scary - it took me several attempts to find a joke in your first comment, then after you repeat it that it was a joke me sensitive heart told the scrutinizing mind to believe you. Hence I give you the infamous slow clap: Clap - - clap! - - clap! - -clap! - - clap! - - clap!
  • 2 1
It took me several attempts to find any correct punctuation or grammar that had any cohesion what so ever in your last post. So, I guess we're even.

I really dislike this myth-making advertising that tries to brainwash you every bike bike is handcrafted in the USA. The bikes are made in Taiwan which has already been pointed out, loads of bikes are made made in Taiwan, very good bikes in fact. There's nothing wrong with making bikes in Taiwan, all the suspension parts and tires are made there too anyhow, and most of the wheels, so it's a perfectly efficient way of manufacturing a bicycle. So if you ride Yeti or many other brands don't attack Giant or Specialized your bike was probably made in one factory or the other. Also Yeti have some amazing reputation for making great bikes, but when I look at customer reviews there are huge problems with particularly their frame bearings.
  • 1 2
IF you're being a bitch about where your bike is made, then shut up and buy a made-in-Temecula Intense and let everyone else enjoy their Giant, Trek, Specialized, or Yeti.
  • 2 0
 yawn
  • 3 0
I don't get what just happened here. I read your initial comment as they probably don't get to do something they like to do for an hour and a half in the middle of the day like the Yeti folks do. American debt, oppression of workers etc. we're talking Taiwn here. It's a developed country. Where is all the gibberish coming from. I think I got your humour.
  • 1 0
 Scary1
  • 2 0
I guess you're the one, then. I didn't think it was that difficult to comprehend, either.
  • 1 0
Besugo, yes I have, their bodywork doesn't tend to last though..
  • 2 0
Everybody tends to assume that being made in the usa guarantees the quality of the product? often a better quality product can be made in taiwan due to the competency of the workers comparative to the usa and also the higher attention to detail.
  • 1 0
 Yeah....uh.......Merry Christmas?

The only places I can imagine a company being this open to a hour and a half lunch ride is a bike company. Wouldn't it be rad if you worked for Ferrari and everyone took a long lunch break to smash out a few laps around their test track? Yeah, can't imagine that happening though, goes to show that Mountain biking is a lifestyle and the people who work in the industry really do care about the sport. Way to go Yeti!
  • 6 1
So thats why I can never get a hold of anyone when I call at 11:30...

....... no really, could you?

the whole Enduro / super D thing is Racing and riding Trail Bikes … A key part to a Trail Bike is the ability to carry water on the frame .. see these guys go out for an hour and a half with no water and the one that has a water bottle has it on the bottom tube loading up with dirt placement ..
  • 5 2
So you guys get paid to ride the best bikes in the world. Where can I apply job
  • 2 0
I'm guessing it's frowned upon if you ride something other than a Yeti - and If you get caught riding something else on the weekends will you get fired?

I love Yeti bikes and wish I could afford one.......but part of me died in that "infomercial"/"advertorial" vid as I thought f*cking yuppie wankers having 1 and half hour lunch breaks. Sorry yeti-FAIL!
  • 4 0
You failed to notice that some the guys who are sponsored and racing for Yeti also work for Yeti in the offices. These are the guys testing and training on their "lunch break". Also would you rather buy a bike from a company who didn't ride and test their bikes every day or one who did?
  • 1 0
Fair point but gee if it was instead of answering the phone with my numerous complaints.......I thought that was what all these companies sponsored riders for-R&D etc.Now Yeti is getting its sponsored riders to work in the factory.......I'm not sure if this is a good thing. As I said I love Yeti bikes so my complaints are borne out of jealousy more than anything. Still shits me though all these thinly veiled ads.......
