Can An Enduro Bike Take on Green River, Utah?

Feb 23, 2015 at 18:02
by Yeti Cycles
Green River, Utah has become well known over the years as one of the most iconic freeride mountain biking locations. Towering book cliffs, soft dirt, and complex terrain make for some of the most unique riding on earth. And while a full on DH rig is typically the bike of choice for such burly terrain, we had different plans. We hit the road to Green River with Yeti Ambassador and local Colorado shredder Shawn Neer. Our plan was to tackle the large lines seen in the magazines and movies on a Yeti SB6c trail bike. Upon arrival, a hillside with endless possibilities lay before us. Before we knew it we had found our groove for the week; building lines, riding at the edge of our limits, and enjoying the quaint and laid back atmosphere of Green River. It was a much welcomed week of excitement in the midst of the cold Colorado winter months.

Where in the world is the landing for that canyon gap? Looks like hes hucking 50ft to uphill...
  • 66 0
The landing certainly isn't the smoothest, but its a rad line none the less. The canyon gap was right next to the main jump we spent most of the week building on. At first Shawn had joked bout hitting it but eventually he just had to do it! It was definitely gnarly to witness.

The good thing is that he was just "testing his limits" as far as I can see he has NO limits.
Beautiful pictures and very good riding.
Cheers

He can predict the future, obviously. That canyon gap is absurd and those pictures are so incredible. They're definitely some of the best I've seen and you captured the La Sals and the fog so well.

i saw the first picture and thought he was base jumping. def no need to for a bike....how....nevermind....there is not way anyone could convince me that it was a good idea. end of story!

check their website, they have some cool old videos.
  • 2 0
I know, can you imagine an entire video of those? Everyone I know wants more trail riding. I don't think I've seen better trail riding videos than on the Yeti website.

My jaw hurts , I just picked it from the ruined office desk. I also had to unglue my eyeballs from the screen, where two slimy marks can be seen. So many iconic shots and the first picture is easily a contender for next POY contest!

Nah Waki, not enough roost. No roost, no win POY on PB. Seriously though, as I was looking through the story, I was loving the shots more than anything that is left in this year's POY. Fantastic shots all of these.

Damn Joey. A great mountain biker and a keen eye for light and composition. Sweet photos.

OH MY GOD. Nothing has made me want to run out of the office, hair-on-fire style, quite like this collection of insane images. @yeticycles, @joeyschusler and Shawn, you all just made my week. Maybe the entire month. Every single one of these photos is POY worthy.

THIS is mountain bike photography. Thank you so much.

Heres the way I view it, they say freeride bikes are dead, but this the emergence of enduro, means that they are essentially advanced 'freeride' bikes labelled as enduro. After all the term 'freeride' would assume that you are free to ride anyplace, which enduro bikes essentially fit that criteria.
  • 8 2
Freeride bikes you can climb on.

The modern "enduro" bike is too flimsy to freeride.
Almost every "enduro" bike has too low of a bottom bracket to pedal technical climbs (it was called mountain biking, then all-mountain, now uh "enduro training?"
All the stock suspension is seriously not up to the task for any serious freeride duty.
20mm is better than 15mm.

they are most all just copies of a certain bike design.
  • 3 0
I believe you can freeride on anything, it's a matter of landing smooth.
  • 9 0
A 2015 Enduro bike has about the same travel as a 2005 DH Bike, and these kinds of trails were beeing riden in 2005. Smile

Those photos are absolutely outstanding! Riding aint bad either
  • 7 1
Such beautiful scenery! Even better riding!
  • 5 0
So much great riding in Green River. It was awesome to check out all the amazing stuff that has been built over the years there, and then get a chance to build some of our own lines! The possibilities for different lines are really endless out there. And yeah, the scenery isn't bad either!

Most of these pictures were better than the remaining 4 nominees for 2014 POY.

@JoseBravo nah, cause its true and everyone knows it.

Gosh these pics are just stunningly awesome. Can I just ask while the bike seemed to hold up well how do you know that no unseen damage to the frame was done when riding it like this? Really curious to know as I'm often wondering what these kind of bikes are really capable off.

Every picture here are way better than the finalists for POY!

I was stoked on this, until I realized half the shots were poached from Bas' Greenriver edit.

I laughed out loud a little bit at the title of this article because I taco'd my front wheel on my enduro bike a couple months ago in green river during a botched cliff drop. Any guidance on where to go down there to find lines or features that have already been built? I know building is part of the beauty of a weekend like that, but it's just so vast down there. Knowing some directions or GPS coordinates for common areas would be awesome???
  • 1 0
 39.085222, -110.177180 or 39°05'06.8"N 110°10'37.9"W
Most of the epic lines they have built are in a area known as Blue Castle just north of Green River. If you travel up Long St. for about 10 miles there is a dirt road that will head west, drive another couple of miles and your there.

Can we please see a video edit from Shawn Neer. I think the world is ready to know his name.
