Half Nelson - Squamish - April 21, 2010

Squamish's newest trail. It's basically a downhill pumptrack. Built by Big Red Ted Tempany and a cadre of volunteers (particularly Steve K, Clark L, Barry M), it's 3km of purpose built trail with umpteen berms, tabletops, water-drainage features and fast! If you were to look up "flow" in a dictionary, you might see a picture of Half-Nelson right by it.

I see a lot of Canadian riding in these heavy tree and green areas. Just wondering what kind of dangers are out there other than riding???? It looks like a lot of poison ivy, ticks, bears, wolves, etc.. I live in Socal and have hills with no trees and little vegetation but still manage to get ticks, poison oak, rattle snakes, and coyotes.

You just have to ride faster than the wildlife. I know around my area, as soon as you stop on the trails here the bugs will eat you alive. Keep on riding though and they won't touch you.

Theres no dangers, there are occasionally bears but they are not dangerous around whistler and squamish, and they don't perceive riders as threats or prey. Generally they will run away or just ignore you. Havn't even heard of anyone meeting a cougar riding, but there are couple around occasionally. Pretty rare as far as I know, not like Cal where I hear it can be dangerous in some areas. It's not dangerous riding in mainland BC, unless you count the terrain!

Really glad you liked it! The TEst is a lot of fun. We went out there once with a columnist from the Independant who thought we were nuts for riding that stuff

Hi again, we also did "Psudo Suga" ?? spare the spelling!! But that was an awesome little trail as well, and then went up to the Nelson. I would love to live out in Squamish, just for the trails...............bliss
My brother has them on his door-step and he only really rides when I come out and drag him to Whistler!!

Looks like they were casing all the bottom jumps and landing flat on all the top jumps, looks fun though, berms and corners look totally ripable, but i think the jumps need a little tweaking.

The guy in the hardtail made all the jumps. I made my duallie short travel by locking out the rear and setting the front fork short. With that I'm getting the trannies. Big bikes actually don't do all that well on this trail - the suspension sucks up all the energy.

This trail is in Squamish which is halfway between Vancouver and Whistler.

Bears for sure. Sometimes cougars but that's more rare. Exposure to elements if you're riding far away from trailhead and break down and have to overnight.

They cased most of those jumps from the looks of the head cam but im not sure, did they?

Well they've asked for more funding and the local trail association is getting it. I can't speak for the builders but everyone (expert, intermediate, beginner) is so stoked on this trail there's talk of expansion already
