I thought it was one of those videos where the guy's bust'n out some skillz, then all goes wrong....axe through the thigh in this video's case. I was waiting for the axe to fall...so to speak.

Having made rung myself I must say that guy is a freaking animal with his axe which must be razor sharp.
That wood looks perfectly aged and prime for use as rung.
