This video was primarily intended to get kids enthusiastic about engineering and manufacturing, and was released on pinkbike because we are a biking based company. The pedal comparison is to show why there is a need for application specific products in mountain biking, as opposed to consumer walmart type products as this is what drives progression. You must remember that 90% of the people that will see this video in the end have never ridden a mountain bike. One of the main sponsors of this video is the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, so what we really are trying to show is how engineering and advanced manufacturing tie in togethor to produce a real product in an exciting way. We also hope it will introduce mountainbiking to a large group that may not have had exposure to our sport before.

What is lame to you is proving very insightful to people from outside the industry. Just trying to put it all in layman's term. Few outside the industry know what the difference is between a "real pedal" and something off the shelf.

I have straitlines dont get me wrong there good pedals but maybe if you compared to a nother real indsutry pedal , why would ppl outside the industry watch this video ! put it head to head with a new deity and post a vid get all your viewers stoked ? or are you worried its strong

I think you hit on the KEY point of this comparison. This episode was shot for a NON biking audience. Most of the young people we promote this to are outside of pinkbike. Those are the people we were hoping to impress not you... Smile Stay tuned. Details coming out soon that will explain what is really going on here. Gnarly Metal is just the beginning. I am in studio as we speak to get a video shot for a Pinkbike announcement early next week.

@spi01 well now that I look at it that way this video really did just that. I think it would be great for consumers to appreciate what drives an industry beyond the consumer interest. I had to admit it but sometimes I am disgusted at the ignorance of consumers but that is the wrong attitude. I'd just make all mountain bikers look bad if I was always like that but you guys are doing the right thing. This video was very well done. I can't stress that enough and I would love for mountain biking to get more exposure. The market could be a little bigger and the sport deserves more attention than it gets. Something about being in the nature of a mountain, alone from the rest of the world, is something I encourage everyone to experience.

I have a question about the contest. I've been working on a design for something for quite some time now and i'm wondering how ideas like these are going to be protected.... I don't want just anyone to see what i've been doing for almost a year now and steal my idea - so, what i'm really asking is how is my idea protected and what exactly do I get out of this if I win?

G's are a measure of acceleration I thought? Don't know where he's getting that number from.
  • + 1
flag Views (Sep 28, 2011 at 4:29)
yea indeed, "G" is commonly used for marketing pruposes.... if were absolutly realistic, 9G on a pedal with lets say 150Gramm would be 9x150Gramms = 1350Gramms. so 1,350KG, i bet the walmart pedal holds that aswell Razz

G for gravity is more likely to be 1G = normal state, 2G = "double amount of gravity" so 2 times the weight.... i think its in some way a acceleration aswell, but i think G is missguiding in such cases.

For mike montgomery 9G would be (dunno what he weights, maybe 70-75?) 9 x 75kg=? alot more, i think THATS what they actualy test!

P.S.: feel free to correct me im not a specialist lol

greetings

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know this was a silly screw up. G's vs LB's?
I think I am seriously going to get management to fire the script writer. Rookie mistake.

Wait a sec, that was my name in the script writing creds... Oh well. Can't fire the producer.

Point really was, most people completely do not get what these riders and their gear go through when they ride this hard. We thought that this would put it all in perspective to the completely untrained eye.... Kids who might try this without the proper gear etc.

well under that point of view it obviously makes sense to make it sound fancy, but i think you can nerd it harder in some points! just my 2cents... anyways a impressive piece of work!

greetings

P.S.: impressed to get the answer from the author itself, keep it up!
