Pure Lithium in Water

We got pure lithium out of a energizer ultimate lithium batter and put it in water. There is a chemical reaction between the lithium and water that releases heat, light, and hydrogen gas. We lit the lithium on fire in the beginnning to speed up the reaction and and make the temperature higher and cause it to pop. Sorry my dad didn't focus the camera...

Li + H2O --> LiO + H2, then the hydrogen gas combusts in the simple reaction H2 + O2 --> H2O because it is heated by the exothermicity of the first reaction. Do thermite next. It's just Fe(III) oxide and Al(II). College chemistry is not this easy.

we do a condensed version of what you just wrote and school... and that shits hard!

lol i know exactly what the reactions where. we also put a decent sized chunk of lithium in a beer bottle with water, covered the top with a balloon and it filled with hydrogen. that made a pretty cool sound when it exploded, but couldnt see the flame. might try sodium next, but thats going to be hard to synthesize. i dont have anywhere to store 2000 degree celcius thermite or a safe spot to burn it lol. would be pretty cool tho

Dude you can just light up a thermite mixture with a magnesium strip, that burns hot enough.

you don't need to light it on fire, the reaction occurs at the same speed either way

no really. those are lithium ion batteries. they have one more electron so they are combined with phosphite which has -3 charge to balance out every 3 lithiums. so its not pure lithium anymore. although if heated enough the battery could explode.. but thats like heated up in fire, not by the outside temperature + body heat
