Isn't Enduro the name given to a timed race done on an All Mountain bike, by All Mountain riders? All Mountain race doesn't have the right ring to it I guess? I could be wrong, correct my poorly educated mind if I'm wrong.

Realistically it's not really another pointless name or marketing ploy. You buy a bike for your type of riding, For a lot of us our bikes are designed to have fun on the way down, but still pedal up OK. if you want to race you find like minded people who have organised a race. Enduro is the race tailored to the bikes many of us already own, not the super hardcore DH bikes or the XC uber light bikes many of us don't own.

DH for the thrill seekers with specific bikes for the job
Enduro for the thrill seekers on there every day ride
XC for the fit people who want to prove their fitness

And anywhere in between, surely you enter the race that appeals to you most, and buy the bike that suits your riding?

I feel the same way about the 29er/26er war. I ride what I like...if that isn't what you like to ride, buy a different bike. And I'll go on record right now and say that I'm currently riding time trials and crits on a 700c.

Precisely. I love my 26" bike and will stick to 26 as I like playful smaller bikes. However bigger wheels make sense now we have the materials to do it as through theory alone they roll over obstacles better. I will stick to brands that make the right bike for me, and ride on bike rides that appeal to my bike riding. As long as the "bigger" companies don't force me into buying a groupset I don't want by not selling the standard I'm running now, and in 10 years time I can replace my wheels without needing a new frame I'm happy to let manufactures innovate in whatever direction they feel is best for the sport.

 Great vid, with awesome music.

It looks like mount doom, but according to the video is "Apt" in France, I had a look on google maps but couldn't find any terrain in the "Apt" area which looked at all like the terrain in the video. There's some mountainous terrain a bit to the south of the "Apt" area, but it looks far too green...

This is not at all a sarcastic comment, but I think I just don't know what the definition of ENDURO actually is. This video is what I thought mountain biking was, riding a bike on mountains, uphill and downhill, all day, or a short ripper, whatever you want. All the definitions seem unnecessary (excluding competitions, like slopestyle vs downhill of course), cross country, all mountain, trail bike, now enduro? These kinda seem all the same to me...
I'm not trying to start a huge comment war, I just don't get it.

So, wtf is enduro?
By the way awesome vid!

flag boardmanman (Aug 22, 2012 at 12:20)
YES Mikeinjasper - My thoughts exactly!!!!!!!!!!!! You are like my brain in a different country!!. I have started this same arguement above and although there is some sense to the whole 'Does Enduro need to be called Enduro and have its own category'.....I still think this type of riding is MTBing, albeit more DHing then XC if I were to make a choice between the two..

Enduro is a form of of racing, this video would happen to be on all mountain biking, because they aren't racing.

flag Orsumness (Aug 29, 2012 at 2:15)
What about just All Mountain? I would have to agree with samminett, cos Enduro is a form of racing to me

I love the backpacks when filming look though. haha

flag sam264 (Sep 2, 2012 at 16:43)
isn't "all mountain" just the same as "cross country" really? it is to me at least... If I'm wearing an open lid, it's XC. If I'm wearing a full face, it's DH.
  • + 1
flag samminett (Sep 3, 2012 at 21:24)
all mountain is a lot more techniqal and more like DH than xc
  • + 1
flag sam264 (Sep 4, 2012 at 2:50)
like i said, an XC ride is when I'm wearing my open face. Doesn't matter how technical the riding is, if I'm pedalling places rather than pushing/shuttling up, it's XC.

I don't think anyone wants to know what Enduro is anymore...Its basically what we've all talked about above.

Long XC ride.....Slightly more DH involved... Smile

All mountain/Enduro, semantics! Cool riding I think. Took a little while before they finally started making different line choices. Looked like I was seeing double there for a bit.

Ooooooooo I finally get it (Not)!!!! Enduro = Riding with 160mm bikes...

Great vid and nice riding but What the Heck is Enduro?!?!?! Looks to me like its riding a bike more downhill then unhill..

flag Raver-Ed (Aug 22, 2012 at 7:00)
@Marcos jokes mate, that is kinda the point of Enduro. Its like DH but you have to cycle to the top of the run

flag ryderup (Aug 22, 2012 at 9:30)
looks like ALL MOUNTAIN riding to me, would you not think that Enduro means long pedaling days. Must have another bike in the quiver!.Cool ADD for the products I supose. It was pleasent to watch but not all that exiting. Good entertainment never the less.

flag Raver-Ed (Aug 22, 2012 at 9:33)
Na this is sort of the misunderstanding about Enduro, its not about long cycling endurance; it is about DH endurance.
Usually a proper Enduro race should have only about 30% uphill and 70% down.
What people actually think Enduro is is what AM riding is >.

flag snl1200 (Aug 22, 2012 at 11:27)
I think there are some differences internationally with how these things are defined as well as a lack of specific definition within the sport. In North America the terms "All Mountain" or "Super D" seem to get used to describe a more technical cross format between XC and DH (favoring the DH but with a requirment to climb to the down or within it). Enduro races, following the footsteps of other sports in the area, typically refer to races with extended endurance requirements, such as the 24 Hours of Adrenaline race series or other intense duration events. I get the sense that often super D or All mountain races here resemble the format for enduro races internationally? Love the video. Great job on the edit, interesting terrain and solid riding.

flag boardmanman (Aug 22, 2012 at 12:17)
Ok, I have read the link from Bamseyhchx and I get the idea now but still.....What the Heck is ENDURO!!!, I still and will always think of this videos riding as AM..for sure. An AM bike for me is a 150-160mm travel bike that can pedal to the top - And an Enduro bike is a (Copy and Paste) 150-160mm travel bike that can pedal to the top..No difference, I think the manufacturers have become confused with all the different names/models they invent themselves..

I have ironically bought a 160mm bike (Canyon Strive) and have it as my AM rig without having a XC and DH bike separately and I will be using it for AM/ENDURO with no separation between the two... I STAND BY THIS STATEMENT. I may enter a ENDURO race but its still AM riding.. Is that complicated?

Yes, Mega-avalanche is the correct answer for anyone asking 'What is Enduro?' - Basically, unlike enduro meanings in other categories (MX,XC and so forth) Enduro in this sense is only DH/bit of Up - Just silly really but I'll give it a go Smile

flag mikeinjasper (Aug 22, 2012 at 12:50)
OK I also read the link, here's my take. When someone asks me what I do for fun I'm going to say that I'm a mountain biker. When they say what kind of moutain biking do you do? my answer will be (and has been in the past):
"I ride a mountain bike up mountains as hard and fast as I can and then ride down them as hard and fast as I can!" Hence the term MOUNTAIN BIKE.

Sorry but Enduro is no the "essence of mountain biking." Why? Because Enduro is a name given to a style of racing and racing is not the essence of mountain biking. To me, mountain biking is about taking your bike to places that a normal bike was never meant to go. Its about escaping the white lines of the asphalt and biking on a mountain. The style of riding in Enduro racing is a good example of what the essence of mountain biking is but it is still a race.

Enduro is a race category/format. The naming conventions in our sport are becoming so fragmented and soaked in marketing that it's hard to care. I suppose the brand wants to be on the Enduro map for peoplewho are interested in participating in the race format but all this is doing is further confusing the laymen.
