What are they using at the marshall point at the trail start and finish points? I just saw them putting the finger on something

Each rider was wearing a transponder on their middle finger. At race start and end, and the start and end of each stage we would insert it into a receiver for our start and finish times. At race end we handed back the transponder and were given a computer printout showing all our times, and provisional placings at the time of finishing.
