It's light because its a carbon frame, stick it on a regular bike and it'll be heavy as feck. When sh1t like this gets as small or as light as a regular drive train, then we'll buy into it. The whole drive train of bikes is very crude, we need sh1t like this, but it needs to be lighter, smaller and easier to fix and setup, you'll need an F1 team to fix this.

check out the rohloff hubs(finite number of gears but you can change them without pedaling),they are "simple",you can mount them on everyday bikes,it's pretty light(considering that you don't need chain rings nor derailleur) and it was tested pretty good for example Super T uses them(used them all the time) and the Flowriders(at least Dan Cowan 100%) and they give lifetime warranty

the only thing i dont get is how the sump gears wok?

flag banshee-ripper (Jan 11, 2009 at 12:46)
The easiest way to under stand the sun gears is to think of it like a ratchet wrench. If you only had one wrench, then when you crank the handle forward, you rotate the socket. But then you have to return the wrench to the starting position before you can rotate it again...

put on an additional wrench, and move them in opposite directions, and you get constant rotation(One rotating the socket, as the other is returning to the starting position)

In this explaination, the "Socket" is the equivilent of the out-put drive ring.

Hope this helps you understand it better. tup

That's one interesting / innovative design... if people don't do stuff like this you would never get anywhere.

That being said, I'm not so sure as to how practical it is... it seems to me like in order to get rid of the derailleur they are putting in a much more complicated system that will be a lot more expensive, harder to fix, and cause more problems than a derailleur. Only advantages I truly see to this over a derailleur is the possibility of a lower centre of gravity on the bike (because of no chain rings) and possibly the infinite number of gears (although I've never wanted more than 8 gears, 9 speed is way more than enough).

flag reallybigmantis (Nov 16, 2007 at 18:27)
one of the cool aspects of a gearbox or internal hub is that the chain can't ever skip or grind or get caught between gears. not that you need infinite gears, but its cool to be able to change the ratio smoothly like a volume button. you can shift standing still and not worry about having to pedal out the gear change. i would like to see the technology go into hubs that fit any bike, rather than only one frame, but what a hell of a start for this guy. cheers!

thats sick, a really great design but like people said its super complicated nd would take narly an F1 team to fix it and at this point it still looks fairly heavy. that being said the idea of it is awesome. thers no chain slip.

now try not to kill be but y not go with the idea that the honda bike had and simply sitck the deraileur into a box in the frame. its been proven to be practical. obvisouly very simple and could provide alot of the same advantages to the frame...lower center of gravity and less unsprung weight to the rear end
