The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks (NSCF) pays for the year-round maintenance and winter grooming of the Birch Hill Recreation Area cross country ski trails, including the trails on Fort Wainwright lands. The NSCF was formed in 1967 and has been in continuous operation since that time. The Birch Hill trails were initially created in the mid-1970's. The formal development of the framework of the current trail system took place in 1981 in preparation for the 1982 Arctic Winter Games.
