The Merrimack Valley Chapter of NEMBA was formed in 1998 to address the needs and concern of the mountain bike community in the Greater Lowell area. Our members and volunteers are primarily from North Middlesex county in Massachusetts as well as Southeastern New Hampshire . Our primary focus is the maintenance and upkeep of Russell Mill Town Forest in Chelmsford, Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro State Forest, and Great Brook Farm State Park in Carlisle. We work closely with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) as well as Conservation Commissions. We participate in discussions regarding new trails, pump track expansion, and general maintenance projects, and advocate for responsible use of these properties by mountain bikers. Additionally, we occasionally sponsor individual chapter members to attend trail building schools, both as a way to give something back to our volunteers as well as helping to raise the skill level of our trail crew.

We host two popular group rides on Tuesday and Friday evenings from April to November. A recent addition is a weekly women's ride that is open to all skill levels, and alternates between Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro and Russell Mill. The attendance for the women's ride has been outstanding, and we are excited to be able to meet this need for our female members. We are always open to feedback about how we can help meet other rider needs. Based on such feedback, we are expanding our weekly chapter rides to include a wider skill range by adding an intermediate group to the existing rides.

We run a weekly PYT (Practice Your Technique) ride on Monday nights at Russell Mill, where the focus is less on miles and more on developing core skills and mastering technical features. Once a year, we also run a half-day skills clinic that is open to active members. Both the PYT ride and skills clinics are tied closely with our mission of trail advocacy. We believe that skilled riders not only have more fun, but do less damage to the trails and learn proper etiquette, all of which help improve the public's perception of mountain bikers.

Every fall we host a Mountain Bike Adventure Series (MBAS) event at Great Brook Farm State Park. The event has been well-attended and makes for a very family-friendly event due to the location. The proceeds of the event fund trail days, tools and other events that enable us to promote trail advocacy.
