ICAN Cycling 38mm Carbon Clincher Wheelset Customer Review
At first I was reluctant to buy a set of chinese-made no name carbon wheel set. However, after a lot of research I have discovered ICAN is rated as top 3 manufacturer of chinese carbon. They in fact make carbon for many other large brand names on the market. Seeing that everything is made overseas in Asia and being an Engineer myself, I know what matters most is the quality of production, not so much which country it's made in.
I had purchased the 38mm carbon clincher wheel set from ICAN Cycling in April 2018 and I have ridden over 800Km (500 miles) on them with not a single problem. The wheels spin true and I needed no spoke adjustments. The hubs are made by Powerway (Bitex) with 2 sealed bearings in the front hub and 4 sealed bearings in the rear hub. The Powerway hubs are a good choice for price effectiveness and reliable use. What’s a sweet bonus is the rear hub sounds really awesome!
The freehub body is made of aluminum and is Shimano/SRAM 10/11-speed cassette compatible. Actually, it will work with Shimano/SRAM 8/9/10 speed cassettes with proper spacers. For those of you that are fortunate enough to afford Campagnolo groupo, you can order from ICAN the Campy compatible freehub.
For the price, you can't beat them. I've owned a set of ZIPP 404 Firecrest carbon wheels in the past and I would say these ICAN carbon wheels are just as good for my cycle training and fitness purpose. I've hit potholes and large rocks and debris on the roads and not one issue. I am a 145 lbs rider, so I am not that heavy, but the max load/rider weight is rated at 207 lbs.
I use Shimano carbon brake pads and they stop quite well on these 38mm profile rims.
The complete wheelset weigh a total of 1,450 grams without the skewers. That is considered to be in the ballpark weight as the more expensive ZIPP and ENVE brands of carbon wheels.
The T700 Toray 100% carbon is finished in a UD matte effect and the spokes are Mac Aero 494 bladed. 20 spokes in the front wheel and 24 spokes in the rear wheel. Spoke nipples are made of alloy.
One of the best features I like about the ICAN wheelset is it has a 23mm width which is the latest trend to accommodate tire widths of 25mm to 28mm without any problems. These are a perfect fit for my full carbon road bike. The aero effect of the 38mm depth is ideal for climbing and flats. 38mm is not too deep for cross winds and I use them as my regular training set.
I would highly recommend them!
Do not be concerned with the durability. It is good enough to be even raced with. For a complete carbon wheelset including quick release skewers that’s sub $500 and includes a 2 year factory warranty, how can you go wrong?
