Climbing is fine. I think I wanted it to be like 29+... but the contact patch of 29+ is great so the smaller knobs dont matter as much. I think 27.5 works well if A) you have a relatively high BB and B) you’re riding hard pack or dry trails.
Low BB / pedal strike galore and the soupy winter slop is too much to dig in with the smaller + tires. But the positives are definitely there. The volume does take the edge off of hardtails. Its a slower kind of riding. Bike packing, longer xc rides etc. but more aggressive riding I think the 29 standard takes the cake.
I am going to make a frame that works for 29/29+ because they both have their place.
Or just build the frame around 27.5+ with a higher bb.
Still unsure but leaning towards selling the 27.5 and building up a wide rim 29 set.

29+ is becoming more and more appealing. Really wanted to go plus on my Primer, but just don't think 27.5+ is going to cut it unfortunately.
The kona unit I had stolen was a seriously great bike. The 29 + was amazing for all sorts of killer long trails. I would like to try and build a unit with slacker HTA really. I think it would be awesome.
dropped the rest of the rim decals lately, and now changed the fork for a shorter offset one with 20 mil more travel. at the same tim added another 20 mil of spacers underneath the stem - works out well, althought the spacer stack looks like a lighthouse now.
My First Marino was 2,9kg, as much as the chromag stylus. My Second one is a little lighter - i could feel it but i havent weight it yet. Are there lighter frames? Yes, but the quality is Spot on. The wields are fine. Its Not Bad Just because it is cheap. In the end its Always 4130 chromoly, Same as pipedreams and whatever. Its Made to endure, Not to win xc-races.
2.9kg would be acceptable, if not great. I'm not mad about the weight like I said, since it's just a beater. But if it was my main bike I'd be disappointed. My Waltworks is just a little over 6lbs or like ~2.7kg. The Marino is almost 8lb/3.6kg. Considering the Walt was built as a much more aggro bike, but I understand it cost 4x as much. I more just wanted to post as a warning to others than as a complaint....
I wonder if they build the Reynolds frames a bit lighter or not.
I used my Ranger as my main bike for 5 years now... next year being the first year I'll use it as a second bike, but it will be with me forever as I see it as a excellent piece of British hardware... of incredible quality... however, I can't help but notice that in the 5 years that have passed since I bought the bike from them, BTR has only produced another 130 bikes... with Tam out of the company, and without a good marketing, the chances for the brand to survive are very small to none... Really sad!
It is really Sad! I hope Burf will find his way! Not every brilliant bike builder is an Effizient Business Man.
I got my second Ranger, the first one was a bit to short, now on the XXL it fits Perfect! Even more that my Moxie.

Hopefully the pendulum is starting to swing back toward higher BB's.... But I live in the desert and am very biased on this topic.
My few attempts trying to run 650b+ didn't work out either but mostly cause of tyre and rim carnage but felt pretty cool at times when its was working for a minute....as far as bottom bracket being low it was not the case with my Switchback since it is a 650b specific frame that will except up to a 3" tier so it actually raised the bb.... when I ran 650b+ on my Surface it lowered bb but not to bad and made the bike feel extremely stable but of course even with plus size minions I would bang a turn burp some psi and a few seconds later rim strike and flat , after a few ruined rides I swore it off for good.
As far as higher bottom brackets go I am appreciating my recently built up Rootdown which seems to have a higher bb by about 1/2 inch more than my other 2 hardtails given I ride quite a bit of chunk... the benefit is noticeable after now 6 rides and bike still feels very stable with the highish bb.
thanks, i really appreciate your opinion. it's the epiphany of my whole fleet history as well (until the upcoming build that is). i can't justify any bigger changes to it, as it rides just the way i want it to. raising the stack some 40 mm helped a lot, but in general it's just gonna stay that way unless i can afford an intend fork or trickstuff brakes - or somebody comes up with a steel bouncer frame i like.
