when i first started racing i thought the idea was to go as fast as i could the entire way. I learned over years of racing this is not true. try and stay smooth and make as little mistakes as possible, and get on the pedals when you can. riding at 110% does not win races. it makes you crash. riding at 90-95% and giving it everything you have on the pedaly bits is what you need to do.
its really hard, but relax and remember to have fun.

This is so true, I was exactly the same. Don't go too fast for your own good, you'll end up crashing. You need to get used to race pace first. Keep loose on the bike and don't tense up. Don't try and pedal in stupid places also. Keep it clean and smooth.
Anyone can win on the day, It depends where your head is. Everyone is different, so find what works for you. Obviously you'll need to take SOME risks in a race run and get a little loose. But get used to racing itself first.
Have fun, if your not having fun, you wont do well.
