Wondering if a DJ bike is a good one for my needs:

I've got a full blown mountain bike for the trails, but I'm looking for something I can ride around the front yard with my kid while he is on his BMX bike. This is mainly neighborhood riding with a little bit of bike park mixed in. I'm 6'2" and about 190 pounds. I'd like a bike that is big and roomy that I can jump around on the little ramps and off some curbs and obstacles. I'd also like a bike that I can wheelie easily and learn to do some simple tricks for fun.

I've tried some of the 22" framed BMX bikes with big risers, but just don't feel as stable on them. I sat on a Scott Voltage today at the dealer and he let me ride the demo around their dirt jump track and it was a blast. Even sitting on the seat wasn't terribly painful for short durations. Smile They want $500 for the base model and $1000 for one with shocks and hydro brakes and other upgrades. I figure I'd save the money for now and then upgrade later if I really fall in love with riding the thing. I'm sure my kid would love it too.

Our main sport in my family is motocross, so I figure this would be some good practice and seat time too.

What do you think?

I've recently bought a Voltage YZ 0.2 and it's awesome. Instead of upgrading, buy something expensive at first, because upgrading costs more than buying a complete bike. Really if its an entry bike, you don't have to worry about smaller details, just get a DJ bike if you wanna jump dirt jumps and do tricks (preferably SS). If you are going for Scott, buy one of their 0.X bikes, not the YZ 35/25/etc bikes.

Thanks Rhen. Glad to hear the Scott is a decent ride. Right now I think that will be the best choice for the $$$.

Dj bikes for the older set is the best thing. I ride a 26 dj specific and I love it.
It's actually my second build. It feels just right. The scott voltage is s great bike. I say go for it. Great for fun exercise too

Nice to hear your thoughts Caezar. Should be a fun bike to just play around on. Of course when I watch videos of what Danny MacAskill can do on these things I'm just amazed. Thanks again.

If you're just "playing" in the neighborhood, you probably don't need a suspension fork--in which case, you could buy a 24" or 26" BMX or a rigid 26" DJ-MTB, for cheaper.
