totally agree that a frame guard is cheaper than a whole frame.
Im just curious to see if something made from D30 or Poron would provide a better alternative.
Carbon or Glasfibre guard would cost around £30. Once its bust it needs replacing.
Poron or D30 should provide the same or better impact protection but wouldnt neet replacing.

As I said Im in favour of protecting the area in front of the crank as this is prone to rock-strikes and £30 is much cheaper that £1k plus the strip/rebuild cost.

Im betting that the layup of most guards is done for speed & cost so will only provide limited protection.
Even Treks advance protection layup still get cracked at 38mph

Perhaps a combination of both some kind of Kevlar/Carbon Fibre matt & D30 would provide the best solution and keep weight down.
