I would say it depends on the stem and amount of material around te steertube clamp.

I have a 13' Trance 29er but the 2 has a std tapered fork.

It's no big deal if you are upgrading the fork, but if you have a nice OE 1.25 steerer fork it makes it a pita to get a stem.

I actually have that stem and love it. I paided WAY less than $140 for it though!

I think I got it from Universalcycles.com and used a discount code and a promo for free shipping. IIRC I paid like $80 shipped then.
