Is that an aluminum Hightower??? I’m seriously considering one but rumor has it, they are hefty...

As already mentioned, it's a Nomad.
And it's not light. Complete build is arounf 16kg.
I guess, alu Hightower's frame weight is not that far from Nomads.

So to put it into context for the N.Amer. crowd, 7.5 pounds with shock.

Anyone know what the same size in carbon would be? 6.5 pounds? In other words, going alum with Santa Cruz adds a pound or it is worse than that?

Personally, a one pound (or 1.2) premium for alum is pretty reasonable. Closer to 1.5-2 pounds and I'd pay for carbon.

I don't even think it's that much... it might be close to a pound comparing a CC frame to alloy but it's probably a half pound or less between a C frame and alloy I'd bet.

Edit - Actually it looks like that photo is without shock, so it may be a bit more substantial difference after all.

Gonna run it without that twinlock deal. So 150 all the time.

It's without a shock. Size M.
C version in the same size is 2830.
So, it's around 0.6 kg or 1.3 pounds.

They seem to lean more towards durability than light weight... my 5010 frame was like 7.5 lbs with shock I think. On a mountain bike, I'd pretty much always take an extra pound for extra durability unless I was going for ultra light XC build.
More like cost-cutting than anything else to be fair.

A Last Coal weights a lot less and is as durable... Funnily priced the Same

Well, I had a aluminium YT Jeffsy before the Nomad...
Yeah, the whole bike costs same amount as a SC frame but the weight is very close, considering Jeffsy is a trail bike...

Geez.
Suddenly my size Large aluminum Bird AM9 frame with RS Super Deluxe Ultimate shock, X-cable holders and ISCG mount weigh 3580g, seems light'ish.
