I think the most important thing to learn and the absolute key to making your images look how you want them to is learning the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO and how each of those affects the image. They're the core things all photography is built on and having some familiarity with them is essential if you really want to get the best out of your camera.
Have a read through this, it might seem like a ridiculous amount to take in at first but if you start going through it and learning/practicing at your own pace you'll soon start to see the benefits:
I'd also very much recommend learning how the histogram works and how to read it. Digital can be quite an unforgiving medium and you need to learn to work within certain technical limits to get the best our of it.

Camera functions Press the flash open button to activate the flash. Choose a flash mode. Press the flash mode button to open the mode list. ... Press the shutter-release button halfway to focus the camera and press it all the way down to take the picture.
