Think it’s just that Droppers were in their infancy back then? (no idea on pic age),limited travel options.
EPO was externally routed at first (2015?) later variants internal, people did drill holes though, no issues iirc

Looks like a motobecane catalog bike. I’m not a fan of aluminum. My first and last aluminum hard tail was a banshee paradox. It was my entry into 29er all those years later, but damn was it a harsh ride. Sooo rigid.
