In the AMA with Dr Henry Turner he mentioned a study by Great Lakes EMS re Neck braces. Here it is:

This is the first large scale study I am aware of which uses real world data rather than computer simulations. Although I haven’t looked in a year or so. Unfortunately there was no statistics attempted on the data, very much limiting the amount of knowledge which can be gained from the article, with reference to mountain biking. As far as I can tell none of the ~10000 cases were mountain bikers, but mainly snow mobile or motos.

Anyway, this is the first strongly compelling paper I have seen for wearing one. Most interestingly is the lower incidence of collar bone breakage when wearing Neck braces. Would love to get hold of the dataset, to see what can be teased out, such as secondary injuries and approximate speeds of the crashes but am going to guess its not publicly available.
