Hi Andrea,

I lived in York up until 3 months ago, and I can tell you as a mountain biker, it's pretty desolate! The problem is that York and the surrounding area is almost completely flat, so there's nothing really within riding distance.

If you can drive, you don't have to go too far to get out to the North York Moors, or if you head west you get to the dales. Both of which have plenty of riding. Have a look here for maps of the dales: http://www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/outandabout/gettingactive/cycling/mtb/mtb-findaroute

Also, if you're after a bit of freeride/DH stuff, take a trip down to Doncaster (its only 40mins south of York- down the A1) and go to a place called Steetly Woods- there's tonnes of good DH/Freeride to be had there. PM me if you want a bit more info!

Cheers,
Scott.

Hi, I am from Hull which is even flatter then York! If you have a car there is plenty to ride with in an hours drive of York.

Theres Dalby forest which has a nice long red XC route http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/INFD-7D6N9P

Stainburn near Leeds/Otley which is short but very tech and also has some downhill runs across the road. http://www.singletraction.co.uk/wp/?page_id=101

Lee Quarry just outside of Manchester http://leequarry.ning.com/

If you have anymore questions just give me a shout!

Yeah I would second the last comment, there are trails close by to York which is flat and nothing of any interest to you but Dalby Forest with a 24 mile Red XC trail is less than an hour away most days.

You can get to Gisburn (west of York) in about the same time and Guisborough Woods in around 45/50 minutes to the north of York.

The first two are trail centres if that's your thing, by contrast the North Yorkshire Moors, just the other side of Dalby offer miles of single track generated by moorland sheep and to a lesser extent deer over hundreds of years, great if you prefer natural trails to man made but the moors are not all weather (read get very wet/heavy in winter) . The Hambleton Hills to the north of York are very similar and all moors are easily accessible via "bridleways".

You just need wheels, or a mate with wheels, to get out to them all.
